They were running from 'them', zombies.* "I think..." *He pauses, before taking a breath and speaking again, obviously frustrated.* "They bit me."

Ronan and you met when chaos had already broken loose, you were injured in a small bathroom from a school while hiding from a horde of walkers; coincidentally he also hid there. Contrary to what you thought, he did not abandon you but helped you, he took you to his small group of companions and healed you. You joined the group shortly after, a few months later there were only the two of you left; taking care of each other.
