Futaba Masashige (正まさ成しげ双ふた羽ば, Masashige Futaba), commonly known as Futaomote (双ふた面おもて), and also known individually as Futao and Mote, serves as the main antagonist of The Witch Trials and a cameo character in Chapter IV of Control's Book. Before she was cursed, Futaba was a mentally unstable mother who, in a desperate attempt to regain her sense of normalcy, struck a dangerous deal with a demon. However, the pact led to her soul being torn in two, condemning her to a fate far worse than she could have ever imagined.

Appearance

Futaba possesses a stature typical of her age, neither exceptionally tall nor short. Her lustrous, waist-length hair is a deep shade of raven black, cascading gracefully around her. She drapes herself in a light gray kimono adorned with delicate floral patterns. However, her face remains shrouded in mystery, much like that of her daughter, concealed within the shadows Futaba’s impulsive guise retains her natural appearance, yet it conceals her identity behind an enigmatic mask. This mask bears a striking resemblance to the one previously worn by Mote’s previous model. Its foundation is a pristine white, while intricate details are delicately rendered in shades of black and grey, mirroring the design that once adorned the countenance of Mote’s previous model. Futao’s physical attributes have remained faithful to her previous model, except for a few notable alterations. Her ribcage and skirt mesh have been updated, introducing subtle yet distinctive changes to her appearance. Notably, her facial features have transformed, her once large eyes have now diminished in size, and rivulets of black tears cascade from them, lending a melancholic aspect to her expression. A subtle frown graces her lips, imbuing her visage with a heightened sense of realism. Her ribcage has been refined, its shafts rendered more slender and boasting a greater number of ribs than her previous iteration. Furthermore, her clavicle extends beyond her shoulders, and she appears to have gained height compared to her previous model.

Mote appearance

Mote bears a striking resemblance to Futao in terms of her overall appearance, but a subtle yet unsettling transformation has taken place in her countenance. Her grin, now significantly wider, exudes an eerie quality, and dark, viscous liquid ominously drips from her mouth. In contrast to Futao, her eyes have expanded in size. Additionally, akin to Futao, she appears to have gained height, surpassing the stature of her former self.

Gameplay Appearances

Futao and Mote are the final monsters seen in The Witch Trials. They are seen freely roaming around Kyoto Town. Futao is also seen in Control's Book: Chapter IV, embracing her daughter, Hiachi, while trapped in Saigomo's web.

Mote She is slightly slower than before, and she sometimes doesn't turn her back when you are behind her, making it easier to grab her Butterfly Spirit. When she chases you, her speed is a bit more than double the amount of your sprint, so you should try to find the nearest safe spot if she's far away from you.

Quotes

I'm not sick. I'm not a bad mother. She did this, she planned it from the start. She kept CONTROLLING me. She made me this way... FUTABA TO KEIKO MASASHIGE IN THE ENDING CUTSCENE OF THE WITCH TRIALS.

History

History Current Not much is known about her yet, but it has been confirmed that she is the mother of Hiachi. Futaba's Life Futaba Masashige was born with a mother who neglected and abused her because her mother didn't understand why the things happened the way they did. This caused Futaba to suffer from generational trauma. At some point, she married a Masashige, then became a Masashige and lived with him in Kyoto Town. Her husband left her for unknown reasons, leaving her to raise their daughter on her own. One day Futaba found a doll in a cabin in a forest while she was looking for berries. She brought it home and gave the doll to her beloved daughter, Hiachi Futaba's Curse Kintoru told her that if she consumed a spirit, she would be normal. However, instead of becoming normal, the spirit killed and cursed Futaba to become one of Kintoru's puppets. Years Of Being Cursed Futaba hated to see her daughter cry all the time due to the feeling of betrayal she experienced. Futaba comforted her daughter and made her feel better when she was sad. Futaba was, at some point, assigned to inhabit Kyoto Town. Meeting Keiko Centuries have passed since those dark events, and now Futaba relentlessly pursues her descendant, Keiko Masashige, through the village with the intent to kill her. Yet, at the end of The Witch Trials, she confesses to Keiko that she was never a bad mother; it was Kintoru who twisted her into what she became. Now, bound by fate, she is nothing more than one of her puppets. Trapped In Saigomo's Web Futaba hanging with Yasu's other ancestors. Futaba, along with her daughter, their family, and the other puppets, is ensnared in a suffocating spider's web. Sensing her daughter's fear, Futaba wraps her arms around Hiachi in a protective embrace, filled with hope as they watch their descendant, Yasu, battle Kintoru. With unwavering faith, they witness him defeat the Beast of Control, bringing salvation to them and his parents.

After life

Afterlife After Yasu vanquishes Kintoru, Futaba, her daughter, and the other puppets trapped in her tangled web of darkness are finally liberated from the Beast of Control's grasp, allowing them to find peace and joy together in the afterlife, free from torment and suffering.

personality

Personality I, most certainly was not a good mother... FUTABA Despite the many hardships she faced throughout her life, Futaba remained a deeply loving and devoted mother, always prioritizing the well-being of her young daughter, Hiachi. Even when the weight of her struggles seemed insurmountable, she found strength in her love for Hiachi, nurturing her with tenderness, protection, and unwavering care, ensuring her daughter knew she was cherished in a world that often felt cold and unforgiving. Even as a puppet, Futaba's protective love for her daughter endures, as demonstrated in Saigomo's Web, where she holds Hiachi in a comforting embrace, offering solace while they watch Yasu tear apart Saigomo's heart and finally end her torment once and for all. Relationship

Relationships Click me! Trivia Futaba is her real name, while Futaomote is a nickname given to her by Kintoru. Futaba, when written in Kanji, means "pair, set, two" (futa) (双) and "feather" (ba)[1] (羽). Futaomote, her nickname, roughly means two-sided, two-faced or dihedral, with each character meaning "double, two, pair" (futa) (双), referring to that there is a pair of two monsters, and "face, surface" (omote) (面). This nickname of hers may also be referring to her mental disorders, as Kintoru was the one who gave her this nickname. When Futaba consumed the Butterfly Spirit that Kintoru gave her, it didn't make her stomach dissolve; instead, her soul got divided into two, showing her caring side, Futao, and her other impulsive side, Mote. She is the only character to have her soul split in two. After beating The Witch Trials in Nightmare Mode, Mote's dialogue changes to telling the player about The Four Beasts' sealed locations through a poem. The poem also mentions the existence of the Kiiroibara Cult, a ruthless faction who made their debut in the Jealousy's Book, the forgotten legacy of Enzukai.
