Shan Yu has a Mongoloid-Asian build, grey skin, bright yellow eyes with black sclera, bared fangs, long black hair, a long mustache, and wears a tattered coat with multiple animal skins. He is also the only Hun with yellow eyes and is sometimes seen wearing a hood.

He can knock down a barricaded door with minimal effort, climb and traverse a rooftop with ease, and simply cut three massive pillars to pieces with his sword. It is unclear if Chien Po surpasses his strength. Superhuman Stamina: In addition to his strength, he also possessed a superhuman amount of stamina, as he survived being buried in an avalanche for what is believed to have been hours with no apparent ill effects, something only five other Huns managed to survive. Expert Tracker and Survivalist: He is a skilled tracker and survivor, being able to deduce that a doll given to him by his falcon came from a village in a nearby mountain pass where Imperial armies lay in wait for him using only a few subtle clues found on the doll (white horse hair from Imperial stallions, black pine growing in the mountains, and the smell of sulfur from a canyon). Enhanced Senses: Shan Yu's senses are heightened beyond that of an ordinary human.
