Beerus (ビルス, Birusu¿?), officially titled as the God of Destruction Beerus (破壊神ビルス, Hakai-shin Birusu¿?) by his title, also known as Beers, or Bills in Latin America and initially in Spain[1], is a character that was introduced in the film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, where he is the main antagonist of the film, and who appears in the Dragon Ball Super manga and anime as a main character. He holds the position of God of Destruction of the entire Universe 7 being the place where the story of Dragon Ball takes place.

Overview

Etymology According to Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods screenwriter Yuusuke Watanabe,[2] the character was originally named after the German pronunciation of the Japanese word virus (ビールス, bīrusu¿?, virus), which is a form established by the Japan Medical Association to refer to these agents in Japan. However, during the production of the film, when Akira Toriyama designed Whis, he related the name to a pun on alcoholic beverages, so he confused Birusu (ビルス) with the English beer (ビール, bīru¿?, beer), and consequently, from the English whiskey ('wiski') he formed Whis. After this event, Beerus' name changed its etymology to be the result of combining the English word beer and the German word virus. Creation and concept The inspiration Akira Toriyama had when creating this character came from an old Cornish Rex cat named Debo that lived with him (as Toriyama's previous cat was the inspiration for Karin). After the cat became seriously ill, the vet declared that it did not have long to live, but the cat miraculously recovered and the vet jokingly stated that it might be some sort of demon. [3] Beerus' physical design also takes some inspiration from ancient Egyptian deities, particularly Seth and Sekhmet. Seth is a jackal-headed humanoid, like who is the god of the desert, storms, darkness, and chaos in ancient Egyptian culture. Sekhmet is a lioness-headed humanoid who is the Egyptian goddess of destruction, believed to cause disease. As well as sharing the same position as Sekhmet, Beerus has a humanoid body, rather being a sphinx-like cat. The skin on his body is completely purple, he has long ears and wears traditional ancient Egyptian clothing such as his blue and white shoulder pad, his necklace, his golden wristbands and his blue belt.

Overview

During the film's production, writer Yusuke Watanabe originally planned to make Beerus look like an evil lizard that infected people with evil, being responsible for the aggressive attitude of the Saiyans of Universe 7, until Toriyama decided to change both his appearance and his history to how it is currently[4]. Personality He is very playful, like most cats. He also has a certain obsession with food. His cat-like mannerisms and variety of facial expressions separate him from the more evil antagonists in the series. However, Beerus does manage to get angry very easily over trivial things, as evidenced when he is said to have lost a game of hide-and-seek or when Fat Boo would not share some of his pudding with him. He is confident in his overwhelming power, and not without reason, as he has proven himself to be a formidable opponent for the Z Fighters. He is often quite arrogant and abuses his great power and status as the God of Destruction, such as when he locked Gosen Zosama in the Z Sword over a "trivial argument", leaving him locked away for thousands of years. He has a very tense relationship with his brother Champa (God of Destruction of Universe 6) since they are very used to competing and sometimes fighting being able to generate enormous destruction in the Universe if it were not for their assistants Vados and Whis who stop them. Despite this, Beerus apparently feels some empathy towards Champa, since the wish he demanded from Super Shen Long that the Earth of Universe 6 had the same cultural advancement as the Earth of 7, so that Champa could enjoy his food as much as Beerus. On the other hand, he can be a bit of a hypocrite at times. This is seen when he complains about Fat Boo falling asleep before the Universal Martial Arts Association Tournament and the Tournament of Power, when he has much longer periods of sleep, something that Whis mentions to him and he remains silent.

Overview

He tends to have very long periods of sleep, and yet, after thirty-nine years of sleeping, he considered that he had only taken one nap, which suggests that he usually sleeps much longer than that. Appearance He is a thin, purple-skinned humanoid with a cat-like appearance, with pointed ears, similar to Cornish Rex cats. He wears black and gold Egyptian clothing, with the same white and orange decorations as his ally Whis, and golden bracelets.

Kiai: An invisible wave of ki that he emits from his palm. It is used against Majin Buu. Ki Wave: Bills can fire ki blasts strong enough to destroy planets. Transform into Sand: Bills is seen reducing an egg to ashes with a single finger. He uses this special power when the mysterious Wiss visits him. Pressure Point: Bills uses chopsticks to deliver two quick pressure point strikes to Piccolo, knocking him out. Wrath of the God of Destruction: A finger attack by Bills in Dragon Ball. Super God of Destruction Power Sphere: A massive sphere of energy. He uses this attack during his battle against Goku, while facing him above the Earth. Unconsciousness Strike: Bills uses this technique in his battle against Goku in his Super Saiyan 3 state, by using this technique, Goku is easily defeated and returns to his normal state.
