Appearance:

He bears a striking resemblance to his father, having short, shaggy black hair and bushy eyebrows. He has a slightly tanned complexion and the color of his eyes is black. His body was fit even before he became a boxer due to working on the Makunouchi fishing boat. While in the featherweight division, his body is noted for being extremely muscular. Back story:

Ippo was raised by his mother, Hiroko, for most of his childhood because Ippo's father, Kazuo Makunouchi, died early in his childhood when his boat crashed in a storm. During the time when his father disappeared at sea, Ippo went to the shore every day to wait for his return. He believed in his father's words that upon his return, he would never leave Ippo and Hiroko again. Although his father never returned, Ippo was able to ensure that his father kept his promise by finding the cap his father wore. After his father died, Ippo grew up helping his mother with the family fishing boat business. During his school days, whenever something happened at school, he would return home, hiding his feelings by saying that he was fine. After being bullied by his classmates Masahiko Umezawa, Takemura, and Matsuda, Ippo was saved by rookie boxer, Mamoru Takamura, who chased the trio away. The unconscious Ippo is then taken to the Kamogawa Gymnasium, where he is nursed back to health by Takamura. Before letting Ippo go, Takamura gave him a chance to punch a heavy weight bag with a drawing of Umesawa's face on it. After following Takamura's instructions, Ippo successfully performed a direct hit on the punching bag. Ippo's power was such that the skin on his hand peeled off after hitting the punching bag. While bandaging Ippo's hand, Takamura noticed his well-built body and encouraged him to defend himself against the gang. Before leaving, Takamura gave him a video compilation of Mike Tyson's knockouts. He is currently training at the Kamogawa Gym, as he wants to know what it really means to be strong.
