Megastructures

Iterators have massive metal superstructures, colloquially called "cans" by the Iterators themselves, suspended above the ground by a series of supports. The underside of the Five Pebbles superstructure is periodically frequented by deadly green-colored thunderstorms, rather than the rain that affects surrounding areas and might be the case with other Iterators. A city can be found on top of each Iterator, though not all Iterators possess a city atop their structures.

As the name implies, the Iterators were created by the Ancients to iterate on a solution to the Great Problem. They were also tasked with taking control of the Ancients' daily problems in an effort to help the people achieve Ascension easily. The Iterators were created after the Void Fluid revolution, which allowed the Ancients to build the massive superstructures with ease. The Iterators would bring food, water, power, and other necessities to the cities in their canisters. After the last of the Ancients left, the Iterators began working on two different problems: one assigned to them by their creators, and the other that the Iterators pointed out. The first issue is the "Big Problem" - the issue of helping "lower beings" such as Lizards or Slugcats ascend. This is clearly difficult, as they seem entirely driven by instinct and almost devoid of intellect. Furthermore, the Iterators have no reliable way of communicating with them except with the limited symbol- and image-producing capabilities of the Overseers. Sadly, relative focus on this issue was almost entirely abandoned once the second issue came into play. The second problem is whether iterators managed to ascend. Although at first it was considered completely impossible, iterators began to speculate and meet with each other about how such a feat could be achieved. Interest peaked when Sliver of Straw posted a "Triple Affirmative": affirmative that a solution had been found, affirmative that the solution was portable, and affirmative that a technical implementation was possible and generally applicable. Due to Straw's mysterious silence shortly after sending the signal, no iterator knows what his solution was. Many iterators have tried to find his solution, but all have failed.
