TAP

The Ambassador Program, also known as TAP, was a project created by Resources Development Administration (RDA) officials John Mercer and Alma Cortez. Rules of Mercer: Don't speak Na'vi, don't wear Na'vi trinkets, listen to adults, their clan (Sarentu clan) abandoned him and other childs.

Background (childhood in TAP)

Like the other children, Teylan was kidnapped from his clan by John Mercer when he was a young child and forced to participate in the TAP program. Being the youngest of the survivors, his memories start at TAP. He is said to be the best student of the Sarentu children by far, and answered the teachers' questions correctly, and began to develop an affinity for human science and technology. At night, he often had nightmares about his kidnapping, and according to Nor, he screamed in his sleep in the Na'vi language. Teylan also once wet his bed and was beaten by Mercer, and the bruises took weeks to heal. At the same time, Teylan was the only child who believed John Mercer's propaganda, convinced that the man had saved them. This exposed him to the displeasure of his peers. Being Mercer's star pupil, Teylan began to view him as a father figure. Mercer groomed him into feeling special and he would withdraw affection whenever Teylan showed interest in Na'vi culture. In 2146, at Aha'ri's instigation, he and his friends attempted to escape the RDA base, but were stopped by Mercer. In 2154, after a forced evacuation due to Jake Sully's rebellion, Mercer ordered the children killed. They were saved by their teacher Alma Cortez, who personally killed the soldiers sent by Mercer and then put the children into hibernation.

Background (escaping from TAP, the Resistance)

In 2169, Teylan and the rest of the group awakened and were taken under the wing of the Resistance. Having arrived at the Resistance HQ some time before the protagonist, he accompanied him in a conversation with Alma, who confessed that they had been in hibernation for almost 16 years, this information surprised Teylan. Teylan quickly became friends with Alexander Tremayne, who, like him, is very interested in technology. Teylan introduced him to the protagonist and merchant Rajinder Singh Grewal. He enjoys spending time at the headquarters, instead of the wild outdoors of Pandora, and seeing all the machinery to tinker with. While spending time outside on Pandora, Teylan finds life difficult and is disappointed that the animals like hexapedes keep running from him. He planned to create a device known as the Remote Xeno-Emotion Analyzer (R'XEA) which could detect the emotions of animals.

Alma Cortez

Alma Cortez is teacher on TAP, kind and empathy. She saved her students, rebelling against her associates and killing the soldiers, then put the Na'vi children into cryosleep hibernation to hide them. While leaving, she witnessed an explosion at the TAP facility since the RDA wished to cover up evidence of TAP, and she assumed the children had died. While she admits she was pretty certain, a part of her considered they could be alive. She admits she was scared of facing the children again due to her role in TAP. Now she is leader of the Resistance.

The Resistance

The Resistance refers to the group of people, including Na'vi and some humans with Eywa's help, who are opposing the Resources Development Administration (RDA)'s return to Pandora since 2168. They are involved in the Second Pandoran War and were part of the Skirmish at the Three Brothers and the Colonization of the Western Frontier. Opposing Frances Ardmore and her mission to make Pandora the new home for those on Earth, their mission is to protect Pandora from the RDA's colonization and environmentally harmful practices. While the Resistance view themselves as the peacekeepers of Pandora, the RDA brands them as eco-terrorists according to Solar Unity law. The RDA intends to kill Jake Sully due to him being a major war leader of the Resistance, which would greatly destroy Resistance morale and interrupt their plans.

John Mercer

Mercer is a leader of the Resources Development Administration, being the Executive Vice President of Frontier Operations in the Western Frontier, with orders to gather materials and resources for RDA projects across Pandora for the Colonization of the Western Frontier. He was also the administrator of The Ambassador Program (TAP) over a decade ago.During TAP, he was known to have strict and rather cruel personality. For example, he physically beat Teylan for his bed wetting so badly to the degree he had bruises for weeks. He viewed Aha'ri's songcord as a useless piece of string, and when she touched him and broke the rule of no physical contact, he punished the entire group instead of only her. He also murdered Aha'ri when she tried to leave with her friends. When it was time to update Aha'ri's student profile, he merely vaguely wrote that she died to an unfortunate incident. Teylan was the only child who believed to John Mercer, addresses him as sir. This exposed him to the displeasure of his peers. Being Mercer's star pupil, Teylan began to view him as a father figure. Mercer said that Teylan is special and he would withdraw affection whenever Teylan showed interest in Na'vi culture. Despite this, Teylan is still secretly loyal to him.

Teylan's log: Personal notes

Day number ... uh ... I don't know. I should get a calendar. "An organized day is an organized mind." I'm keeping notes like a real scientist now. Mercer said I should. He gave me this tablet. Set it down right next to me. The sun was in my eyes; I couldn't see him properly. I don't think he was smiling. He said he knew I'd understand why. Why he had to ... do that ... to HQ. Everything he's doing ... He said he's working really hard, and .. I keep thinking about it, over and over. I can't sleep. Just staring at the ceiling tiles. Imagining it falling down on ... all of them. I thought about leaving last night. Running away, like a kid. I packed a bag and everything. But if Aha'ri couldn't do it, I have no chance. There's nowhere to go, anyway. They'll never forgive me. I can't forgive myself. Sometimes, I wish ... I wish we'd never left TAP. I know I shouldn't. But, it was home. We were all together. I don't think we'll ever be together again.

Teylan's personal log: Change

"Teylan's log." Hmm. No. "Tech Log, by Teylan." "Teylan's Technological ... " Oh, I'll name this later. So'lek is giving me funny looks. But, this is home now. I like it. It's a bit different though. People here don't really ask me to do anything. Alma said I can keep some things from TAP. Like my hat. And I have my radio from Mercer. It's still broken but, I'm opening it up right now. Might be able to do something with the wiring. I'm keeping track of everything I fix here. A list for Alma. We have a lot to catch up on. Sixteen years. I bet she really missed us. She told me a story once, in TAP. About a girl who slept for one hundred years. It wasn't true; it's just a story. But Alma's body sleeps too. She said her body, her real body, is asleep while she walks around in her Avatar. So I guess sixteen years of sleeping isn't so bad. What did we do while we slept? I don't remember having any dreams -- (gasps in shock) Whoa. My radio ... I think ... I think it made noise...

Teylan's Idea: R'XEA planning notes

With my idea for a Remote Xeno-Emotion Analyzer humans (and Na'vi) who aren't that good at reading Pandoran animals should be able to analyze their moods safely from a distance. (Rethink the name before presenting the idea to others. Ask Priya? And So'lek! R'XEA could be a bad word in Na'vi.) I'll just need a standard infrared thermal imaging unit from an AMP suit. It can be connected to a wireless signal array I can repurpose from the broken medical scanner I saw in storage. (Not sure how possible this is yet. Will need to build new casing to hold both units. Someone tried to fix the scanner with duct tape. Doesn't look professional. Mercer always said first impressions are important!) When used, the wireless signals from R'XEA should reflect off the animal's body and back to the unit. The variations between heartbeats can be translated into an agitation level, and an alarm will sound when the animal is getting agitated/dangerous. (Medical scanners have pretty loud alarms. Got to adjust that.) If the database can be populated with enough test readings, R'XEA will theoretically be able to interpret emotions like happy or sad, and not just general agitation. (Will need to list some good test subjects. Direhorse are big but peaceful. Kinglor are really fuzzy. Will the signals reflect from fuzz? Investigate. Ikran always seem angry. Maybe save them for later.)
