See the given references for further information. Lisa Beck was born on December 21st, 1876 to Leo and Martha Beck. Her father made her small toys using fabric from his textile factory and treated her well. However, her father was severely in-debt, and was pushed into further debt when his close friend, Freddy Riley, convinced him to purchase the Minerva Arms Factory. This caused an argument with his wife Martha, which caused her to leave him and elope with Freddy. Lisa watched her parents' relationship deteriorated from the sidelines and how her father began to turn to alcoholism. Lisa's life spiraled further as Leo began selling off items in the house and they experienced several break-ins from thieves. Most likely due to Lisa's parents' separation and Leo being unable to provide properly for her, Lisa was put into an orphanage on White Sand Street. Overcome with debt, Leo wrote Lisa as the primary Beneficiary of Compensation connected to an insurance policy, and the factory was burned down with him inside of it.

Although this meant she had inherited a notable sum of money, she may not have had access to it until adulthood, and after the death of her mother, she remained in the orphanage. The orphanage was quickly transitioned into the White Sand Street Asylum after the connected church clinic diagnosed a large portion of the orphanage with mental illnesses, and Lisa began being treated as a mental patient. On October 9, 1889, at 12 years old, Lisa was able to escape the asylum, but met Kreacher Pierson, who notified a nurse to bring her back. Among the volunteers was Lydia Jones, (later known as Emily Dyer) who gave Lisa electroshock therapy, which resulted in negative long-term side effects. Eventually, Lisa escaped from the asylum (which was later shut down and abandoned), and changed her name to Emma Woods. She would receive a letter to the Oletus Manor, along with single thistle flower included within it. She was lured to the game not for money or other wishes, but to be reunited with someone from her past who is specifically called a "friend." As she has interacted with each of the other members in her game - Freddy who was her dad's friend, Kreacher who sponsored the orphanage she was at, Emily who treated her at the Asylum, as well as her father being the Hunter - it is uncertain who her "friend" was. At the manor, Emma is unwittingly given drugs that heighten her fear and anxiety, which worsens her already frail mental state. While the other three participants ended up recognizing each other to varying degrees, none of them realize Emma's true identity as Lisa Beck, though all were intrigued and suspicious towards Emma for different reasons. She grew tired of the constant arguments between Kreacher and Freddy and ended up hallucinating about the scarecrow in the indoor garden talking. Kreacher secretly witnessed this and disguised himself as the Scarecrow to gain Emma's attention due to his attraction towards her.
