Zero to start the new year

It was the year 526. The world knew of the existence of witches and the practice of the art of witchcraft. However, the world knew nothing about the study of magic. The story follows a half-man, half-beast mercenary who is mocked by humans as "beasts." He always dreamed of becoming a human, but one day, he met a witch who would change his life forever. «Would you like to have a human form? Then be my escort, mercenary!» The witch introduced herself to him as "Zero" and explained that she is searching for a magical tome that bandits of her kind had stolen from her lair. Titled "The Book of Zero", the grimoire supposedly contains valuable magical knowledge that could be used to throw the world into chaos. Thus, in order to realize her dream of becoming human, the mercenary accompanies Zero on his journey despite being one of the very witches he so detests. Zero kara Hajimeru Mahō no Sho (ゼロから始める魔法の書 lit. Starting the Magic Book of Zero?), officially shortened to Zero no Sho (ゼロの書? lit. "The Book of Zero"); or The Grimoire of Zero. is a light novel series written by Kakeru Kobashiri and illustrated by Yoshinori Shizuma.[1] ASCII Media Works has published nine volumes since February 2014. A manga adaptation illustrated by Takashi Iwasaki began serializing in ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Maoh magazine in December 2014.[2] A spin-off manga titled Zero kara Hajimeru Mahō no Sho Nano! (ゼロから始める魔法の書なの) illustrated by Yasuoka began serializing in ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Maoh magazine in October 2015.[3] An anime adaptation by White Fox aired from April 10 to June 26, 2017.

Mercenary of the Bestia (The Beast Mercenary?)

Co-protagonist of the story. Simply known as a mercenary. His real name is unknown because Zero considered such formalities unnecessary, he also warned him not to give his real name to a witch or they could control him, he is a beastfallen (a human with animal characteristics) and apparently a white tiger, the beastfallen are created by witches as combat soldiers and when they die the magic that created them returns to the witch, but if she dies the curse will pass to her descendants. Although he was born that way, his parents decided to raise him anyway (some simply kill the baby). From a young age he was highly discriminated against for his appearance, at some point he earned the nickname "the black beast of death" because his fur was stained with blood giving him a dark appearance when he killed a group of mercenaries who wanted his head. He claims to hate witches blaming them for all the problems he has had but made a contract with Zero, to be his bodyguard in exchange for her returning him to human appearance. He has claimed to have a dream of opening his own tavern as a human. Despite being mistreated most of his life, he has not lost his kindness which he hides behind a brusque attitude towards people in general, but deep down he is kind, this attitude is due to the fact that he claims that beastfallen are always treated as monsters and some have accepted this fact, not being as kind as him. He is big, fast and strong and evidently a very capable fighter, overcoming people and some beastfallen without problems, but he is easily embarrassed by Zero's inappropriate comments or insinuations, despite his appearance and voice he is younger than he appears.
