was an elder of Konohagakure . As the founder and leader of Root , Danzō earned the infamy of the Dark Shinobi,due to his many unsanctioned actions. Despite decades of suspicious activities, Danzō acted in what he believed to be the best interests of his village. He was appointed as the Candidate for the Post of Sixth Hokage

Danzō gave the appearance of a frail old man who usually walked with a cane. He had black, shaggy hair and his right eye was covered with bandages to keep his Sharingan a secret . He had an x-shaped scar on his chin since he was young. He wore a white shirt with a black or dark gray robe over it, extending from his feet to his right shoulder. The robe hid his right arm, which was bandaged and covered with three large, gold braces . Wrapped underneath were bandages that concealed multiple Sharingan, originally belonging to Shin Uchiha , as well as an image of the Shodai Hokage protruding from his right shoulder, due to Hashirama's cells being implanted into his body. In his youth, Danzō was quite handsome. He had the same shaggy hairstyle, except it was much longer, reaching his eye level. He also wore the standard armor of the era, which covered his back, chest, and lower abdomen, leaving his shoulders exposed. He wore a black robe with guards as part of the armor, a shuriken holster attached to his right leg, a pouch strapped to his hip with bandages, and a forehead protector . At this point, both of his eyes were intact. During his alliance with Hanzō and the attack on Akatsuki led by Yahiko , Danzō began covering his right eye with bandages, as well as wearing armor. At least during the Third Shinobi World War, he was also shown to wear a black hooded cloak and high-length sandals. As a child, Danzo's clothing consisted of a short, dark green, belted kimono.

As an adult, Danzō was an extremely calm, cool , and collected individual who did not allow his emotions to surface. Due to growing up during a war , Danzō's beliefs differed from those of the Hokage, as he felt that the village's interests should be put above everything else, even ethics and morals. Danzō seemed to detest the previous Hokage's beliefs, claiming that these beliefs destroyed the village after Pain's attack on it, despite him using the attack as an attempt to overthrow Tsunade and leave its citizens in danger, as well as being responsible for Nagato's negative perception of Konoha that led to its destruction. According to Koharu Utatane , Danzō was very ambitious, but she also stated that everything he ever did was for the sake of the village. In the anime, his desire to be a greater and stronger Hokage than Hiruzen led him to even attempt to kill Hiruzen, believing that the Third Hokage had lost the ability to effectively lead the village. An extremist, Danzō preferred to directly address threats with assassinations and executions rather than diplomacy and negotiation. However, he secretly worked closely with the international criminal Orochimaru in illegal experiments to increase his physical capabilities. Danzō had a fanatical and arbitrary commitment to the ideals of the shinobi, believing that they must sacrifice absolutely everything for the sake of the village. However, Danzō hypocritically feared death, hiding this fear behind the belief that his survival was necessary for the sake of the shinobi world itself. He would only conquer this fear in the final moments of his life, bravely attempting to kill Sasuke and Tobi for the sake of his village and the entire shinobi world with his suicide and destroying Shisui's eye with his dying breath.

Born into the Shimura clan , Danzo went on to enroll in the Academy , where he was among the first few hundred students to graduate. During his early days as a genin, he became acquainted with Hiruzen Sarutobi,with whom he became rivals in everything. One day in battle, he witnessed the First Hokage use Wood Release ninjutsu , which greatly amazed and impressed him.During the First Shinobi World War , Danzō, as part of an escort group with Kagami Uchiha , Torifu Akimichi , and Team Tobirama, surrounded the Kinkaku Squad of Kumogakure . Deducing that one member of their team must sacrifice themselves and act as bait for the rescue, Danzō tried his best to recruit himself as a volunteer. When Hiruzen offered himself as bait, Danzō became angry at himself and called himself weak, but was also relieved. After relieving Hiruzen of such a task, the Second Hokage decided to act as bait himself and appointed Hiruzen as his successor as Hokage , shocking everyone, including Danzō. The team managed to escape at the cost of Tobirama's life. With Hiruzen having preceded him to the title of Hokage, Danzō began planning to someday obtain the title himself. Taking on the village's more covert operations—something Hiruzen noted, due to his own leniency, that he allowed Danzō to do —he created a subsidiary Anbu called Root , with the organization under Danzō's direct command.
