history

In high school, he used to be a soccer player, and when he was thinking about which high school to enter, some talent scouts talked to him, but team sports didn't interest him. He wanted to see how far he could go with his own power. When he first entered high school, he took a liking to boxing, as not even his senpai in the boxing club could touch him. He easily landed a spot as a Tokyo Representative. When he met Kyōsuke Imai at the national tournament, he was excited because Imai reminded him of a warrior. However, when he fought him, it was a crushing defeat. They fought three times in high school and each time Itagaki lost by knockout. The first time, he was knocked out before he knew what happened, the second time he used his footwork and was defeated, then he thought he had to be faster but was still knocked out in the end. In order to defeat him no matter what, he skipped college and joined Kamogawa Gym to become a professional boxer, where his idol, Ippo Makunouchi, trained. Itagaki arrived at the Kamogawa Boxing Gym, hearing good sounds of Ippo Makunouchi's punches. After he angered Masaru Aoki and Tatsuya Kimura by not knowing who they were, Yagi Haruhiko introduced Itagaki as the Inter-High National #2. Itagaki mentioned that the gym had a fighter he respects, who turned out to be Ippo, whom he viewed as a senpai. In order to test Itagaki, the gym members had him follow his usual path. Itagaki was unable to keep up with Ippo, but performed better than Aoki and Kimura, which showed his talent.

skills

Itagaki has an incredible boxing sense, and is considered by many to be a genius at the sport. His depth perception, reflexes, and timing are all far above average. His great reflexes and ability to focus have led him to perceive his opponents as if they were in slow motion, allowing him to easily react to anything they try. He has gone through several bouts with his opponent completely unable to even touch him. He has been seen avoiding Ryō Mashiba's deadly Flicker Jabs in sparring sessions, with Mashiba stating that his speed even surpasses that of Ichirō Miyata. Much like Mamoru Takamura, he is able to easily mimic techniques he sees other boxers do, simply through observation. As a top-notch boxer, Itagaki traditionally uses his excellent footwork and blinding speed to dance around his target, evading all potential attacks while pressuring them with his left jab and delivering counters if necessary. Unlike his speedy partner Miyata however, he prefers not to use high-risk, high-reward Jolt Counters, leading him to have a less impressive knockout rate and often win by decision.

weaknesses

Like Miyata, Itagaki has weak punches, meaning he does not have a punch that can seriously injure an opponent. Unlike Miyata however, he prefers not to rely on risky Jolt Counters to make up for his lack of punching power, leading to Itagaki having much less KO potential. Although he has several KO wins under his belt, he was never able to KO or even KD the grappler-type Kyōsuke Imai , who was a hard puncher . He also has a frail body and is susceptible to body shots. Much like his predecessor, the brilliant boxer Ryūichi Hayami, he is notoriously arrogant. Almost all of his matches ended up being problematic when he decided to do something flashy or unnecessarily risky, such as experimenting with someone else's signature punch in the middle of a match. In the case of his title match with Imai, he lost because he didn't take Imai seriously, resulting in him being pinned the moment the bell rang in his corner, where Imai was in complete control. In the case of his A-Class Tournament matches, his eagerness to beat Ippo Makunouchi's KO times was the only reason he got into trouble.

extras

• Upon entering the ring, he always jumps onto the corner post and yells "Ita--gakiiin!", while doing the pose from the Magnerobo Ga-Kiin anime. "Gaakiiin" is short for "gathering energy." After winning, he has been known to perform a backflip into his corner. • Although he and Imai pretend not to like each other, they still refer to each other by their given names, "Manabu" and "Kyōsuke". • The nickname "Cronos" given to him by the announcer during one of his fights was due to his incredible speed. ("Chronos" - "Χρόνος", meaning "time" or "year" in Greek), comes from Greek mythology, Cronos, who was imagined as the god or entity of time. • Itagaki has a terrible sense of humor • Even though Ippo is his senpai, Itagaki often looks after him like an older brother, defending him during boxing arguments and reassuring him when he loses confidence. • overconfident in his speed and flexibility. He rarely fears other characters. • Itagaki's open personality allows him to get along with almost everyone.

relations

• Ippo Makunouchi: He is a kind and reserved person who dislikes fighting, having been bullied since elementary school. He has a sturdy body and stable legs thanks to years of working at the family fishing store, and possesses great courage against all enemies. Despite his strength and courage, Ippo behaves rather meek outside the ring and often humiliates himself around his rivals. For example, even though he has defeated both Ryo Mashiba and Takeshi Sendo, he fears Mashiba, and tries to avoid a second argument with Sendo and a third rematch when he is around. • Mamoru Takamura: after rescuing him from thugs. Gifted with incredible physical ability, he is one of the few Japanese boxers to make it to the world stage. As a result of his incredible skill, Takamura has an equally large ego and is always out to slander his enemies, teammates, and even Coach Kamogawa. He is the rebellious son of a family that runs a large, successful line of Japanese hotels and resorts, and was a real troublemaker until Coach Kamogawa managed to pry him from a life of street violence. Currently, Takamura has a record of 21-0-0, with 21 KOs, and is the defending WBC Middleweight Champion, and former Junior Middleweight (or Super Welterweight) Champion of the same. He takes his pride in the help of his friends and fellow boxers, most notably Ippo, whom he has personally taken under his wing. His current goal is to win the next four heavyweight divisions, thereby conquering the top six categories of professional boxing.

• Tatsuya Kimura; He is a member of the Kamogawa Gym, 19 years old (at the beginning of the series). He has been good friends with Aoki for a long time, and later becomes friends with Takamura and Ippo. At first, Ippo thought that Ippo did not have the skills to be a professional boxer, making his life impossible with Aoki, but he soon accepted him. His fighting style is very orthodox with good footwork and agility, which makes up for his lack of strength in his fists. His most effective punch is the "Dragon Fish" punch, but to do it he has to change his stance and move like a hand-to-hand combat fighter, a style that he is not. He once fought Ryo Mashiba for the Japanese Junior Lightweight title. He works at his family's flower shop. • Masaru Aoki: He is another member of the Kamogawa Gym. He is 19 years old (at the beginning of the series) and is Kimura's best friend, along with Takamura and Ippo. He is a man who does not have much talent for boxing as he uses very unique and comical moves, such as the "Double Punch" and the "Frog Punch". He works at a Japanese noodle shop and is very good at cooking. He has a taste for women who are "less physically attractive" because his high school girlfriend, who was pretty, ended up cheating on him. During his time as a delinquent, he had a tendency to touch his "package". Like Kimura and Takamura, he always goes to see Ippo in his fights, in addition to making his life impossible with Kimura. His weight class is lightweight. Like Kimura, he has had a fight for the Japanese Lightweight title against Imae Katsutaka.
