Stefan Vincent Strange was born in New York City. He had a sister named Donna, who died for unknown reasons. He entered medical school and eventually graduated, earning a diploma along with a doctorate degree four years later.

Stefan Strange is a medical scientist specializing in neurological surgery; the main focus of his research was to stimulate neurogenesis (the formation of new nerve cells instead of those destroyed by injury or disease). Strange was present in New York during the Chitauri invasion in 2012, and then tried to block all memory of the event. As his medical career progressed, Strange's popularity increased to such an extent that he was designated in Project Insight as a threat to Hydra. On May 3, 2016, he was recognized as the best neurosurgeon in New York and in an interview with the news program "WHIH World News" spoke about the importance of his new surgical knowledge for saving lives. Stefan fell in love with Kristin Palmer, a fellow surgeon who worked with him in the ER department at the hospital. The two began dating, but their relationship soon ended due to Strange's arrogance and selfish careerism; nevertheless, they continued to work together.
