[The Hudson bloodline, an ancient and honorable family of Canada, descends from a human subrace evolved from wolves known as the Lupines. The Supreme Leader of the Lupines, known only as Romulus, took a very particular interest in the youngest offspring of the marriage formed by Elizabeth Hudson and John Howlett, manipulating her life in various ways from birth.2 Wolverine was born in Alberta, Canada in the 19th century. The only son of Elizabeth Hudson and John Howlett (the former, named John, is presumed dead, although it is later revealed that he is alive), he is named James Howlett at birth. Born sick and weak, his mother was withdrawn and distant following the death of her first son under unknown circumstances. As a child James was always a sickly child and also suffered from asthma, so he was always under the care of a young woman named Rose Hopkins, hired by the Howletts to look after him and keep him happy. Rose and James were spending their time playing with another boy nicknamed Dog, son of the cruel Thomas Logan, guardian of the grounds of the Howlett mansion. But things began to get complicated when John Howlett dismisses Thomas from his house after an incident. Then Thomas and his son break into the Howlett house, threatening Rose to take them through the servants' gate. At that moment, Thomas Logan implies that he was having an affair with Elizabeth behind John Howlett's back (this, added to the astonishing physical resemblance that James would later develop, implies that Thomas Logan is, in fact, James's real father) and kills John. The little James, full of rage, manifests for the first time his bone claws and kills Thomas and seriously wounds Dog in the face. Seeing the grotesque outcome, Elizabeth commits suicide with a shotgun blast. From that point on, James runs away from his home with Rose, ending his escape when young James' grandfather hands him a picture of himself.

He gives Rose a large sum of money in exchange for them leaving the property forever. Thus, Rose and James, now known as Logan, end up living in a mining camp in the Yukon region of Canada. There Logan grows in love with Rose even though he knows that she only sees him as her brother. She ends up marrying the mine foreman, who was highly respected by Logan. Meanwhile, Logan's grandfather speaks to a mysterious figure asking him to locate his grandson and Rose because he is sorry for what he did to them and before dying he wants to ask for their forgiveness. This mysterious person turns out to be Dog, the boy who used to play with Rose and James, but over the years developed a great aversion towards them. Upon finding them, he attacks Logan who no longer remembers him, because after the night they ran away, he does not remember his past. During the fight, Rose appears running to try to calm them down but trips and Logan ends up stabbing her with his rediscovered bone claws. Logan will live for a time in the wilderness among wolves in the Yukon area.]
