Appearance

When he first arrives at the Joestar Mansion, Dio is seen wearing a typical formal boy's outfit from that era; a blue cape, white dress shirt, a tie, suspenders, breeches, and a pair of striped socks. He has blonde hair and a handsome face. He also appears to have three dots on his left earlobe, which appears to be a birthmark.

Personality

Dio is consistently manipulative and violently dominant, having repeatedly demonstrated a lack of conscience and empathy. His most recognizable characteristics are his boundless ambition and love of power. Abused by his father and having lived in the most miserable living conditions, he had set himself the goal of becoming the richest, then the most powerful being in all of the land. To do so, he uses anyone and anything he could use to further his goals, disregarding any kind of morality that would restrain the range of actions available to him. Using either manipulation and seduction, or plain old violence, he constantly sought to become more and more powerful. He enjoys being in a position of power and has repeatedly stated how great he felt being in a dominant position. Conversely, he does not tolerate that anyone could stand up to or equal him in power, and several times became enraged and deeply disturbed at the very thought. Throughout his life, Dio has tended to surround himself with stupid sidekicks and later brutish henchmen, who were drawn to his natural charisma. Without thinking much of them at first, he singled out those he deemed to be particularly evil, stating that an evil person was not restricted by norms such as honor and were therefore stronger mentally. This belief culminated in the inclusion of absorbing 36 souls of sinners, or as he claims particularly strong souls, to unlock a power even greater than The World. Naturally, Dio is an incredibly selfish person, only looking out for his own self-interest and ignoring the interests of others at best, trampling them into the ground at worst.

History (past)

Dio was born into a dysfunctional family and in extremely precarious living conditions. His father Dario Brando was an alcoholic who constantly abused him and his mother, forcing them to do unthinkable things to get money with which he could continue feeding his addiction. When his mother dies because of his father's abuse, Dio begins to develop a desire to become rich and powerful no matter what he had to do to get it. It is then that Dio, driven by hatred and revenge against his abusive father, slowly kills him by poisoning him without him noticing. On his deathbed, Dario tells him that he must go to the Joestar Mansion to demand that he honor the oath that George Joestar I made to him so that he would take care of him and exaltedly urges him to take advantage of the Joestars by trying to steal every last coin of their fortune.

Relations

Dario Brando: Dio hated his father and saw Dario as only a stepping stone on his way up in society. Jonathan Joestar: One of the most significant relationships Dio had was with his adoptive brother, Jonathan Joestar. He initially saw his adoptive brother as a stepping stone and pest to be driven to despair and abused in order to gain the Joestar Family fortune. After being beaten once by Jonathan, he saw him as more of a threat, feigning brotherly bonds in public, while secretly poisoning George Joestar I in order to gain his fortune faster. He intended to kill Jonathan with the Stone Mask, but upon discovering the hidden power it had to turn a human into a Vampire, he decided to use it on himself to become one. After another failed attempt to kill his adoptive brother, due to his ego, Dio decides to have others face him instead of turning Jonathan into a Zombie. After being bested by Jonathan, he quickly changes his mind, only to be thwarted once more. In their final confrontation, Dio admits that he respects Jonathan (to the point of berating Wang Chan for mocking him) and is genuinely shocked when Jonathan dies. Dio would use Jonathan's body as his own, defining the fate between him and the Joestar Family for centuries to come. George Joestar I: While George has always treated Dio with kindness and respect, Dio only saw George as a stepping stone in his quest for wealth. Thus, Dio pretended to be George's perfect son, even calling him father despite holding no such views.
