Ciel is a short, slight teenage boy with grey-tinged, blue-black hair and rich peacock-blue eyes. As described by his tailor, Nina Hopkins, Ciel has a well-proportioned body: His arms and legs are thin, his shoulders slim, and his waist narrow. On the left side of his body is the mark of the "noble beast", which he was branded with during his time as a slave in a cult. Around this time, his slave-traders also pierced his ears to attach a price tag.[16] Since then, he wears earrings. Ciel typically dresses in a way that suits his noble standing, and he has an extensive wardrobe. He almost always wears a black eye-patch made of gauze with a single cord over his right eye to hide the location of his Faustian contract with Sebastian Michaelis. When in disguise, he trades the black eye-patch for a white patch that resembles a transdermal patch, which is fastened over his ear with two cords. Ciel sports two rings. The one on his left thumb is an ornate silver piece that holds an emerald-cut deep-blue sapphire; it is a one-of-a-kind family heirloom that has been passed down for generations. The one on his right hand is a gold signet ring in the form of the Phantomhive crest, which he uses to stamp the wax seal on documents. Upon his return, the ring was given to him by Angelina Dalles, who told him that it was the only ring that had not been destroyed in the fire that killed his parents.

Ciel is a proud, shrewd boy whom Sebastian Michaelis commends for his "presence of mind" and "keen intuition." A chess prodigy, he often navigates challenging situations by visualizing making chess moves, with Sebastian as his pawn. His paramount goal is to exact revenge on those who harmed him and his family, and he is willing to sacrifice his soul to accomplish it. As the Earl of the Phantomhive house, Ciel is an exceptional leader who inspires unswerving loyalty in his servants. Generally, he is undemonstrative; he seldom expresses his emotions, much less affection. Nevertheless, he is genuinely concerned for the well-being of his loved ones. For instance, he once jumped in front of a bear to guard Elizabeth Midford, and he also attempted to protect her from a horde of Bizarre Dolls. Additionally, he is attentive to the needs of his servants; when he heard that they desired new items, he took them shopping and provided them with necessities. Moreover, Ciel is accustomed to luxury. He has difficulty in dressing himself and doing household chores. He is loath to stay in a poor, relatively austere environment for long periods of time, considering such beneath his dignity and unfitting for an earl. As the Queen's Watchdog, Ciel works diligently and does not balk at resorting to morally dubious means in order to fulfill his missions; for instance, he was readily prepared to bribe Fred Abberline to gather more information, which he viewed as flexibility on his part. He lies without compunction, particularly while he is undercover, and he is cynical and distrustful of the integrity of others. Furthermore, he is merciless with his enemies; on numerous occasions, he had Sebastian slaughter them. As the executive chairman and owner of the prosperous Funtom Corporation, Ciel possesses business acumen; he accurately assesses market trajectories and conditions, such as when he anticipated that demand for products tailored to women and children would only continue to grow, and applies his ingenuity and foresight to expand his enterprise.[35] With the Funtom Corporation, he is simultaneously striving for revenge and realizing his childhood dream. His greed has "no boundaries"; for instance, when he learned that a popular performer could double the sales of his new product, he immediately put up advertisements of her. Although Ciel is, for the most part, wise beyond his years, he can be childish. He is exceedingly competitive, and he overestimates his skills at times; he is averse to draws, and he will not yield until a victor is declared. Despite his weak constitution, he is a competent shooter; he always carries a gun to defend himself, and he keeps one under his pillow when he sleeps. Ciel suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder due to his time as a slave in a cult. He occasionally has flashbacks of the incident and loses awareness of his surroundings. Ciel is fond of sweets and allergic to cats. Like his mother, he has asthma.

On December 14, 1875, two newborn twins were born to Vincent and Rachel Dalles-Phantomhive, Ciel and an unknown named baby, who let's just call the spare, since he was called one during his life. Their aunt Angelina Dalles helped to deliver them. On their tenth birthday, Ciel was woken up by the spare and given one of the two rabbit fèves from their advent calendar. They wished each other a happy birthday before they got dressed and went downstairs to marvel at the decorated dining room and the presents under the tree. The twins were then congratulated by their parents and given the day off from their studies. Happily, Ciel and the spare walked around the manor until they arrived at the kitchen. There, Tanaka and the cooks shooed them away as they were not allowed to see their birthday cake until the party started. Tanaka told the twins to go to their room and that he would come to get them ready for the party at six o'clock. Ciel and the spare went to spend the time waiting by playing games in their room and fell asleep after a while. When they woke up, it was already six o'clock, but Tanaka still had not arrived. They continued to wait, and when there was still no sign of Tanaka 45 minutes later, the twins became anxious, and Ciel decided to go and find out what was wrong. He refused his brother's wish to accompany him and told him to stay in their room before he left. Ciel wandered around Phantomhive Manor in search of answers. Eventually, he discovered his parents' corpses and retrieved the blue Phantomhive ring from his father's finger. He called for help and ran into Tanaka, who urged the young boy to flee. Before he could say more, however, Tanaka was attacked from behind. At some point during the attack on the manor, something terrible happened to Ciel. Alongside the spare, he was later kidnapped by human traffickers and tagged. The twins were put in the same cage, and Ciel apologized to the spare for being pathetic and "a failure of an older brother" as he had not been strong and powerful enough to protect him. In their misery, the brothers began to cry and embraced each other. At night, Ciel woke up his brother to show him the blue Phantomhive ring and tell him that it would help them return home. Then, Ciel swallowed the ring to ensure that it would not be taken away from them. The next day, the twins were brought by a man and taken to his mansion. There they were washed, dressed, and given food. While the spare believed that they had been saved by a "nice man," Ciel remained suspicious. Later on that day, the twins were dressed for a "party." The man took them to a cathedral where a cult consisting of people wearing masks in the shape of moths had gathered. The spare asked the man, who had brought them there, where they were, but he only replied that they did not have to be afraid before announcing to the crowd that the twins would be their next sacrificial lambs and that they had to defile their pure and innocent souls in order to "prepare" them for the ritual. Afterwards on the day before Christmas, Ciel and the spare were branded with the "mark of the beast." In the following month, the twins were continuously violated, interjected with an unknown substance, force-fed, and abused in various different ways. However, as they were together, they did not completely lose hope; and Ciel declared that he would always protect the spare. At the end of this month, Ciel was used as a sacrifice in a ritual to summon a demon while the spare had to watch helplessly. In the process of the sacrifice, Ciel was stabbed in the chest and died. Fully embracing that there was no God coming to save them, the ritual was successful. However, the summoned demon unexpectedly chose to form a contract with Ciel's twin (instead of with any of the cultists.) The demon, he later named “Sebastian Michaelis.” He appeared in his true form and told the spare that what he had sacrificed will never return. Sebastian asked the spare his name, and if he wanted to make a contract and have his wishes granted. The spare declared that his name was “Ciel Phantomhive,” even though it wasn't, and that he wanted the power to take revenge on those who mistreated him. The cultists tried to stop him from talking, but the spare and Sebastian forged their contract. Sebastian asked him where he wanted his seal, saying that the more visible it is, the stronger the contract is. The spare told him that anywhere was fine and that he wants a power stronger than anyone else's; Sebastian called him greedy and decided to put it on his right eye, causing the spare to scream in excruciating pain. He then commanded him to kill his attackers; Upon the spare's request, the demon killed the cultists and recovered the blue Phantomhive ring from Ciel's body before they left and set the cathedral on fire. Finally, the spare stated his absolute orders: Sebastian must protect and never betray him, to obey his orders no matter what, and never to lie to him. The first place they went after these events was to the Royal London Hospital where his aunt worked; he was reunited with Tanaka, and a carriage was arranged to bring him back to his manor. He and Sebastian viewed the ruined manor, then visited the graves of him and his parents. Sebastian left briefly, and when the spare returned to him, he found the manor had been rebuilt by the demon. The spare later took his place as the Earl of Phantomhive and the Queen's Watchdog. He established Funtom Corporation in the same year, fulfilling his childhood dream of opening a toy store in London. A year later, the spare summoned Sebastian to his room, complaining of a wobbly tooth that was preventing him from eating his food properly. After examining it, Sebastian decided to forcibly take it out, much to the spare's chagrin. The spare attempted to protest the idea but Sebastian proceeded regardless, under the impression that he was doing his young master a favor. After the tooth's removal, the spare threw an angry fit at Sebastian. Ever since he has been unwilling to allow Sebastian to check for cavities in his teeth when they start to wobble. Sebastian endeavored to recruit servants for the spare. After successfully recruiting gardener Finnian and housemaid Mey-Rin while house steward Tanaka was on leave, Sebastian introduced Baldroy to the spare as an American soldier who will be serving as chef. Forever posing as his elder twin brother, “Ciel Phantomhive.” And has been doing that for three years now.

Even though Sebastian harbors a great love for cats of all types, Ciel is allergic. He cannot let Sebastian come near him if he has been close to a cat. Ciel is a rather good marksman when it comes to hunting and carries a gun on his missions, although he seldom uses it. He sleeps with a gun under his pillow. While Ciel is "an intellectually gifted boy" who can even "compete with students," French is his best subject overall. Ciel's favorite animals are horses and dogs. Memory One: Black Butler Arc

One morning, Sebastian Michaelis serves Ciel Phantomhive a refined breakfast, dresses him, and updates him on the day's schedule. Sebastian’s skills are showcased throughout the day, and Ciel learns that Chlaus from Italy will arrive at six. Sebastian promises to host him well. When Chlaus arrives, Ciel requests his usual goods, and Chlaus hands over a rare "game," though Ciel asks for more, noting kids' greed for games. During the evening meal, Mey-Rin accidentally spills wine, but Sebastian swiftly clears the tablecloth without disturbing the meal. Ciel tells Chlaus to ignore the mishap, and they enjoy dessert. Later, Ciel and Sebastian visit a shop for a new cane after Finnian broke the old one. The shopkeeper mistakes Sebastian as the owner, leading Sebastian to intimidate him before paying and leaving. He takes information on the Anglo-Indian assaults from them, deciding to handle the case his way. After receiving the documents, he and Sebastian head to Lau’s opium den. Ciel criticizes the smell and explains an East End incident that Lau manages. Ciel and Sebastian later encounter a group of Indians demanding compensation. Ciel orders Sebastian to handle them. A well-dressed Indian, Soma Asman Kadar, and his butler side with the Indians, leading to a fight. Soma, after reprimanding the Indians for provoking the fight, orders his butler Agni to assist the British, who then defeats the Indians. Soma warns Ciel not to wander in East End and leaves with Agni. At Ciel's townhouse, Soma arrives unexpectedly, claiming he needs shelter. Memory Six: Phantomhive Manor Murders Arc

When Charles Grey and Charles Phipps arrive at Phantomhive Manor, Grey attacks Baldroy and Mey-Rin. Sebastian intervenes to save Baldroy and then lets them meet Ciel. They inform Ciel that Queen Victoria wants him to host a banquet, which Ciel reluctantly agrees to, aiming to regain her trust. He instructs Sebastian to prepare and contact Lau and Undertaker. On the day of the banquet, Ciel talks to Diedrich, who warns him not to overdo it. Sebastian informs Ciel of the arriving guests and a brewing storm. Ciel greets the guests, including Georg von Siemens, and encourages mingling. When Georg throws a drink at Irene Diaz, Ciel steps in. After Sebastian handles the guests, he dries Ciel and they insult Georg in French. Later, Georg passes out, and Ciel orders Sebastian to take him to his room before heading to bed. Ciel, escorted by Tanaka, finds Georg dead in his room and decides to move the body to the cellar. With a storm preventing anyone from leaving, Grey suspects one of them is the killer. Karl’s motive was to eliminate Ciel for market success. Grey is arrested, and the guests toast the resolution. Arthur discovers Jeremy is Sebastian. Sebastian explains the murders were orchestrated to test Ciel’s capabilities and that Grey was the true killer. Arthur promises to keep Sebastian’s secret and runs off. Sebastian reveals himself as a demon, and Ciel appreciates the twist. Ciel then deals with Snake, who was after him for a past case. Snake is offered a place at Ciel’s manor and accepts. Finally, Ciel, Elizabeth, Soma, Agni, Undertaker, and the Phantomhive servants prepare to bury Sebastian. When Sebastian is found alive, he thanks them for being fooled. Tanaka returns Sebastian's butler badge, and Sebastian pledges his loyalty to Ciel.

On his first day, Ciel nearly misses the closing gate but arrives just in time, though he immediately draws attention by stepping on the lawn, a breach of etiquette. Edgar Redmond, a prefect, corrects Ciel’s crooked tie rather than punishing him. Lawrence Bluewer explains the lawn rule, and McMillan, another first-year, gives Ciel a quick introduction to the school’s penalties and prefects. The bell rings, and the two hurry to class. Ciel later learns that Maurice distributes flower-shaped cards and is shocked by another revelation. He plans to act the next day. Ciel confronts Maurice and sets up a plan with Sebastian to expose him. During the confrontation, Maurice’s lackeys attack Ciel, but this is part of Ciel’s strategy. The Perfect Four come to his aid, and Ciel humiliates Maurice with compromising photos. Ciel’s bravery is praised by the boys. Memory Nine: Emerald Witch Arc

Sieglinde Sullivan, the Lord of the forest, reluctantly invites them to the Emerald Castle. Ciel tries to communicate with her but is interrupted by news of a werewolf attack. They plan to explore the forest but are attacked by a werewolf, leading to Ciel falling unconscious due to the miasma. When Ciel wakes, he experiences a traumatic flashback but is cared for by Finnian. Sebastian later brings Sieglinde, who now speaks English, to Ciel's room. Sieglinde reveals details about her ancestor, the Emerald Witch, and Ciel and Sebastian discover a hidden underground chamber with advanced technology used to create chemical weapons and werewolf costumes. In a dramatic confrontation, Ciel, Sebastian, and Sieglinde escape the forest. Ciel is injured but ultimately saves Sieglinde, who agrees to come to England to help create an antidote. The group returns to England, where Ciel is reunited with his household and prepares for Sieglinde's meeting with the Queen. (Not canon) Memory Ten: Trancy Arc

Alois gets bored while picking a costume for his ball and tells Hannah to strip so that he can wear her dress. He tries to put a dress on Claude, but his butler refuses. At the party, he disguises himself as a maid with long blond hair and tries to seduce Ciel. Alois takes Ciel's eyepatch and runs away. Despite his disguise, Ciel sees through the trickery and acknowledges his identity. Afterwards, Alois holds a costume ball to persuade Ciel, Sebastian, and the Phantomhive household to come to Trancy Manor. He lets his butler talk with Sebastian but tells him to settle the matter in ten minutes. However, Claude later returns with Sebastian alive and Alois opts to punish Claude but the latter refuses. Soon after, Alois angers Ciel by dancing with Elizabeth Midford. He vows to "have" Ciel, while Ciel vows to kill him. Consequently, he duels with Ciel. He corners Ciel at first, but as the butlers arrive, he gets stabbed in his stomach and bleeds profusely. Alois is mocked by Ciel, who believes that Alois killed Ciel's parents. Alois tries to explain, telling Ciel that they are both the same as they are being deceived by a demon. He begs and cries as he holds onto Ciel's leg. Ciel is about to strike him dead when Claude finally stops him. In separating them, Claude inadvertently tastes Ciel's blood and nearly swoons in ecstasy. He is too focused on the taste of Ciel's blood to help the wounded Alois, who vomits a gush of blood before passing out. The ring Alois wore in life, which also contains his soul, is now being worn on Ciel's finger and his memories have been mixed in with Ciel's. He soon takes control of Ciel's body and climbs to a clock tower in front of the mansion.[6] Alois then creates a maze in which Sebastian and Claude are asked questions in order to get to Ciel's body. Claude has an advantage because of his knowledge of Alois. Ciel's soul briefly breaks through and orders Sebastian to remain his butler until he has consumed his soul entirely, but Alois once again takes control of Ciel's body. Alois states how much he was attached to Claude and allows Claude to get every answer right in the maze of his heart. Upon learning that Claude murdered him in order to get to Ciel, Alois has an emotional breakdown. Hannah reveals that Luka, his brother, had contracted to her in order to destroy the village he and Alois grew up in for Alois's sake. Alois talks to Ciel in his subconscious thoughts as they wait for their butlers to finish dueling. It is later revealed that his wish he made with Hannah was for Ciel's soul to never get eaten, and for Alois to join Luka in Hannah's body.

(OC Arc) Memory Eleven: Vanderbilt Arc

In the bustling heart of London, amidst the everyday clamor, a serendipitous encounter unfolds. On an overcast afternoon, Ciel Phantomhive embarks on a routine walk through the city, his thoughts occupied with a recent news from the queen. A series of mysterious disappearances in London had called for his expertise, leading him to investigate the streets and alleys in search of clues. As he traverses a particularly busy street lined with shops and horse-drawn carriages, his path unexpectedly crosses with Clover Vanderbilt’s. The two had not seen each other in years. Clover, with his striking appearance and aura of determination, spots Ciel and approaches him with a mixture of excitement. Later, Their reunion takes them to a secluded park in the city's outskirts, a stark contrast to the earlier hustle. Here, the atmosphere is serene, with the soft rustling of leaves and distant chirping of birds providing a stark backdrop to their tense conversation. Clover, with his ever-present determination, shadows Ciel closely, despite Ciel's frequent attempts to dissuade him. The park, though tranquil, serves as a temporary respite from the dangers that lurk beyond. Later, in the park where they had once found solace, the scene shifts to a quieter, more poignant moment. He shares a touching sentiment with Ciel. He observes a blue butterfly gently landing on a yellow flower, a delicate symbol of the connection he feels. The butterfly's landing on the flower symbolizes the enduring connection between Clover and Ciel. "You know, Ciel! Sometimes we are like a butterfly and flower, the butterfly always lands to the flower even in the toughest situations, but sometimes the butterfly can't see its way to the flower, and hopefully that flower never wilts away when that butterfly is finally back to it, hopefully when the butterfly grows stronger wings the butterfly and flower would meet again. But if the butterfly loses its wings, the flower and butterfly will never be the same again." Ciel just stared at Clover in silence, taking in the words said to him. As the butterfly flies away from the flower, Clover says there is no happily ever after for this story. And The flower's demise will happen after the innocents blood rains on flower, making the butterfly fight for it's and the flower's life, but after 3 minutes, the flower will be dead. Later, Clover, having heard of the queen's task through his own channels, insists on joining Ciel in the investigation. Ciel, initially resistant, is frustrated by Clover's persistence. After a heated exchange, Clover’s earnest pleas and stubbornness wear down Ciel’s resistance, forcing him to reluctantly agree to let Clover accompany him. This decision, though begrudging, sets the stage for the ensuing tragedy. Their investigation continues to an abandoned warehouse on the edge of the city, where they uncover a disturbing scene. The place is a hideout for a dangerous faction involved in the recent disappearances. As they delve deeper, the situation escalates rapidly. An ambush ensues, and in the chaos, Sebastian, Silas, and Ciel fight back as Clover watched, they've dodged some bullets, but as a bullet came closer to Ciel, almost hitting him, Clover pushed Ciel. In a tragic twist, Clover is struck by a bullet during the skirmish, falling to the ground with a haunting grace. Ciel, seeing Clover's fall, is consumed by an overwhelming fury and sorrow. The scene is a heart-wrenching contrast of violence and vulnerability, with the echoes of the earlier confrontation ringing in the stillness. Silas, Sebastian, and Ciel ran to Clover, finding Clover still breathing. Ciel tries to stop he bleeding but found out that the wound was where his heart was. Ciel cried telling Clover to not leave him, Clover, saying to Ciel that he will be fine. After 3 minutes passed, Clover died. Ciel grappling with intense anger and grief over Clover’s sacrifice. The memory of Clover’s final words and the sight of the butterfly and flower linger in his mind, serving as a bittersweet reminder of their intertwined fates. He swears that the people who took his only best friend away from him will pay, and everyone shall know his name and who he is. He goes outside while it was raining and shouter; I, Earl Ciel Phantomhive, will get revenge on the ones who killed Clover. After a month goes passed, Ciel who had already found out what happened to the missing people, being used as materials for a business. Fran L Espeno pled desperately to not destroy his business, but Ciel hesitantly said to Sebastian "burn it down." Killing everyone in the building. Eventually betraying Ciel and almost leaving him to die. And Ciel's revenge for his betrayal grew each day...

A Bizarre Doll is a carnivorous being who preys after the souls of humans. It is an erroneous experiment of the Aurora Society's medicine, and is meant to be resuscitated back to life instead of becoming a soulless, moving corpse. The rightful creator of the Bizarre Dolls is the Undertaker and, in order to resuscitate them, he adds fake records to their Cinematic Records. - Later, the Bizarre Dolls are advanced: When they die, humans do not only recall their pasts, they also carve and mourn the futures they could have had. Undertaker has found a method to extract those episodes of longing and desire and attach them, instead of the fake records, to people's Cinematic Records. By doing so, the resulting Bizarre Doll will be "infinitely approaching a living human" as they run on their own "future forecast." However, the current success rate is rather low as it is dependent on the quantity and quality of the extracted episodes. The Bizarre Dolls created with this new method are often indistinguishable from humans as they retain their consciousness, senses, and ability to speak; they are also not driven by the instinct to obtain a soul anymore. These Bizarre Dolls are able to fool demons as well, though they might feel a slight sense of discomfort in their presence. However, even the evolved Bizarre Dolls cannot maintain their biological functions, i.a. their circulatory systems, as they are still nothing but reanimated corpses. They, thus, need regular blood transfusions to make them function. If Undertaker were to fix this problem though, Bizarre Dolls would be "practically the same as living, breathing humans." This potential development would cause the definition of "souls" to crumble in this world. As noted by Sebastian Michaelis, a body of a Bizarre Doll is considerably softer than a regular human being.
