The Land of Ooo

The show is set in a fictional continent called the "Land of Ooo",[14] in a post-apocalyptic future about a thousand years after a nuclear war called the "Great Mushroom War". According to Ward, the show takes place "after the bombs have fallen and magic has come back into the world".[15] Ward admitted "[he] never planned it – [he] just saw this world as a magical place. The show developed organically – someone would add an element to the world, and it would stick." Ward went on to state that the writers decided on the backstory during the production of the season one episode "Business Time" which centers around "businessmen rising up from an iceberg at the bottom of a lake."[10] In "The Real You", when Finn wears the Glasses of Nerdicon, planet Earth can be briefly seen from space, with a large chunk missing from it. Later it is shown in the episode "Five Short Graybles," which initially shows the storyteller with a rotating holographic globe with a portion missing, where the North American continent would be. In "Sons of Mars", this depiction of planet Earth is again presented, but not fleetingly like in previous episodes. During a presentation at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, Ward said that this will likely never be directly addressed in the series. References to the war are shown constantly in the background of the show. Ward intentionally adds these and other things to the background. "What I wanted to do was make a game out of every episode of Adventure Time, where you could freeze-frame and find things in the background," said Ward on these Easter eggs.[10] The first two seconds of the opening credits show nuclear bombs, melee weapons and other abandoned human items scattered everywhere, and a skull on the ground. In "Ocean of Fear", when Finn and Jake are out in the middle of the ocean, there is a tank on the small patch of land they swim to.

The Land of Ooo

Later on, when they swim to the bottom of the ocean, there are a many sunken cars and tall sunken buildings; this may be a reference to the rising ocean levels caused by climate change. When Jake and Finn fight the Lich in "Mortal Folly", they do so in an abandoned subway station. In the episodes "Memory of a Memory" and "I Remember You" flashbacks to Marceline's childhood show her residing in an unpopulated, destroyed city with broken bridges and buildings on fire. In the episode "Finn the Human", through from an alternate reality, flashbacks showed a nuclear bomb to have played a role in the creation of the Lich. The war's effect on humans is also shown, with there seeming to be no other fully human character except for Finn. However, human remains are scattered all around Ooo. Also, in "Beautopia," a character by the name of Susan Strong is implied to be human as well, although it is unclear whether she is really human or she belongs to a strange fish-headed, animal-hatted mutant tribe. In "Holly Jolly Secrets", Finn and Jake discover a few secret VHS tapes by the Ice King, the last of which shows Ice King as a human. In the tape, he explains he purchased his golden crown from an old dock worker in northern Scandinavia. In "Her Parents" Lady Rainicorn's parents try to eat Finn and after Jake stops them they admit that they thought they would never get another chance to eat a human, implying that humans were hunted, killed, and eaten. This is a possible explanation for why Finn and the fish people wear animal hats, in an attempt to camouflage themselves from potential predators.

Finn The Human

Prior to the start of Adventure Time, Finn was adopted as an infant by two anthropomorphic dogs named Joshua and Margaret, who found him in the woods. His best friend and adoptive brother Jake the Dog (John DiMaggio) accompany him on many of his adventures in Ooo, the fictional world that the series is set in. The mystery surrounding Finn's origins and whether he is the last human left in Ooo is a major part of the character's narrative arc. Later in the series, it is revealed that there are other humans still living in Ooo and that Finn's parents Martin Mertens and Minerva Campbell came from a community of survivors living on a chain of islands. The show depicts Finn dealing with the struggles of adolescence and coming to terms with the complexities of life. Over time, the show's creators decided to further develop Finn's backstory, including his parents and whether he was truly the last human left in Ooo. A major theme of the series is that Finn begins to see the world in more nuanced terms, rather than the naive outlook he demonstrated in earlier seasons. In the early seasons of the series, Finn is enthusiastic and readily resorts to violence to settle conflicts.

Jake The Dog

He is a dog/shape-shifter hybrid, referred to by others as a "magic dog". He is Finn's constant companion, best friend, and adoptive brother. Jake has a unique set of abilities called Stretchy Powers that allow him to manipulate the shape and size of his body, coming in handy on innumerable occasions throughout his and Finn's adventures. Jake was 28 years old at his debut in "magical dog years," and ages throughout the series, though he rarely acts mature. It is inferred that magical dogs have a lifespan similar to Humans, as demonstrated by an aged Jake in "Dungeon Train." Then again, how exactly magical dog years correlate to human years remains to be seen, although both Finn and Jake were shown to be babies around the same time, showing that they age slightly faster, however, his age as of "Joshua and Margaret Investigations" suggests that it slows down to the rate of human's aging at some point. Jake is currently in a relationship with Lady Rainicorn, and, by "Jake the Dad," they are the parents of five Pups. Jake was conceived when his parents, Joshua and Margaret, were on an investigation tracking down a shape-shifting creature in the forest near. Tree Trunks's house. During the investigation, they were attacked by the creature, and it bit Joshua on the head. Jake was later born from the pustule that formed from the bite on his father's head and was taken in by Joshua and Margaret to live alongside their natural-born son Jermaine. It is inferred that Jake's Stretchy Powers that he has had since he was a puppy are a result of his biological relationship with the shape-shifting creature. Jake would develop a lifelong friendship with Finn over the years. Joshua was known to push his three sons to be tough, while Margaret was often more protective and nurturing towards them.

Princess Bubblegum

Princess Bubblegum is the current incarnation of the Candy Elemental. Which is comparable to the inhabitants of the Candy Kingdom, who are all composed of types of desserts and candies. She rules over the Candy Kingdom, but in the Season 6 episode "Hot Diggity Doom" (the first part of the season's finale), an election was held and she lost to the King of Ooo by a landslide. As a result, she no longer ruled the Candy Kingdom and the King of Ooo replaced her as the new ruler until a rebellion against King of Ooo allowed her to reclaim the throne in "The Dark Cloud". As of the Series Finale, Princess Bubblegum and Marceline have resumed their romantic relationship, and she is currently Marceline’s girlfriend again. Princess Bonnibel Bubblegum was formed as a part of a massive, blob-like hive mind made of pink gum known as the Mother Gum in the years immediately following the Mushroom War,[6] which spread out across the destroyed city and first appeared in "Simon & Marcy". As a child, roughly 800 years before the events of the series, Bonnibel was living in the post-apocalyptic wasteland that Ooo was. Living in a hideout next to a radioactive river (which would later become the place the Candy Kingdom was built) with only her brother, she longed for more family members, thus creating Uncle Gumbald, along with Aunt Lolly and Cousin Chicle. Centuries before the beginning of the series and some time after the foundation of the Candy Kingdom, Princess Bubblegum met and befriended Marceline the Vampire Queen, eventually entering into a romantic relationship with her. This is also when she got her beloved Rock T-shirt from Marceline during a performance In "Earth & Water", a flashback reveals that 15 years prior when Flame Princess was born, a messenger of the Fire Kingdom gives Flame King word that his offspring will be more powerful than he could ever dream to be. The Flame King tells the messenger to leave the baby in the woods to perish.

Marceline the Vampire Queen

Marceline is a fun-loving and playful 1,000-year-old vampire queen. Unlike a traditional vampire, Marceline does not need to drink blood to survive; rather, she consumes the color red, or other similar tints. Marceline is also an avid musician who plays an electric bass guitar, which she crafted from her family's heirloom battle-axe. As of "Come Along With Me", Marceline and Princess Bubblegum have resumed their romantic relationship and is currently Bonnibel's girlfriend again. Roughly a thousand years prior to the events of the series, Marceline was born to a demon lord named Hunson Abadeer and a human woman named Elise.[5] Abadeer is the ruler of the Nightosphere, a Hell-like demon dimension, and subsists on the souls of sentient beings. Marceline and her mother both survived the events of the Mushroom War, a mysterious and destructive war that ravaged the earth one thousand years prior to events of the series. One of Marceline's earliest depicted childhood memories is of her living in a trailer with Elise, who recounts to her the story of how she met her father.[5] Elise was suffering from an illness, however, attempted to keep it hidden from Marceline as not to worry her. She had her draw a map of the land to get to a secret "club house" where there was supposedly a party happening. During this time, Simon Petrikov—the man who would become the Ice King when he was overcome by the power of his crown—found Marceline in the ruins of a city and gave her a stuffed animal named Hambo to cheer her up; by the events of this episode, she is apparently 7 years old, as stated by Simon.[8][9] The two developed a caring relationship, although the crown ruined Simon's mental health, forcing him to leave Marceline alone. Marceline eventually comes into contact with Finn and Jake when she forces them from their home. However, she returns it to them after finding the cave they found a better place for her. eventually they become friends.

Ice King

Originally depicted as a two-dimensional, humorously over-the-top villain trying to kidnap Princess Bubblegum and various other princesses on a regular basis, the character's personality was subsequently expanded, revealing him to be a kind-hearted but misunderstood old man with completely twisted senses of morality and social behavior, suffering from loneliness and memory loss. Later seasons unveil his tragic backstory, revealing he was once a good human named Simon Petrikov who lost his mind, memories and loved ones due to the magic crown giving him his ice powers. In "Come Along With Me," Ice King is permanently reverted back to Simon after almost being digested by GOLB. Sometime before the Mushroom War, Ice King was a normal, olive-skinned, dark-haired human named Simon Petrikov who was studying to be an antiquarian (a specialist in the knowledge of ancient artifacts). He was also a Professor of Archeology, and gained a PhD in an unknown subject. he had reached for the same book as a woman named Betty Grof, who had been a fan of his research for years. Afterwards, she approached him again, and asked him to sign her book, and pointed out runes in his book that could serve as a clue to how to find the Southeast Cove. Simon was impressed by this and asked her to go on an expedition with him, which she accepts, despite her plans for a 6-month trip to the Australian Outback. During this trip, both Simon and Betty fall in love with each other, and they manage to find the Enchiridion. When they get back, Betty urges Simon to take sole credit for finding it, which he does reluctantly, and Betty begins planning once again for a trip to the Australian Outback. Ice King is seen as a goofy, not all there magical being.

Flame Princess

Flame Princess, whose true name is Phoebe and is occasionally called FP, is the current ruler of the Fire Kingdom as well as Finn's ex-girlfriend. When Jake asks Flambo if he knows any princesses that are Finn's age so he can fix his broken heart, he introduces Jake to Flame Princess. Flame Princess was locked away in a lantern in the main chamber of the Fire Kingdom when Jake first encounters her. It is later revealed that her father, the Flame King, put her there on Princess Bubblegum's advice when she was an infant, and she did not come out for 14 years. She has a short temper, trust issues, and a heat core that can destroy the world if overblown with emotions. She is also close friends with Cinnamon Bun. As an infant, Flame Princess was chaotic and free-spirited—she was even said and proven to be more powerful than her father, Flame King. After hearing this, the King ordered a messenger to send his daughter away from the Fire Kingdom to "wander into the outside world to perish." She was left in a nearby forest with a Crystal Lumberjack, but wandered away laughing and burning her surroundings. When Flame Princess wandered near the Candy Kingdom, Princess Bubblegum noticed this, and, while wearing a fire suit, returned her to the Fire Kingdom. Upon arrival, Princess Bubblegum told Flame King to keep his baby under control or she would do so herself. Flame King initially denies having a daughter, however, admits his parentage when Bubblegum insists that he take her back. They eventually came to an agreement, and decided to trap the royal baby in a giant lantern for the rest of her life to ensure that she could never usurp her father's position in the Fire Kingdom. After her break up with Finn, Flame Princess had trouble controlling her emotions and powers again, claiming she does not want to feel that way as Princess Bubblegum observes her. After returning home, Flame Princess realized she is more powerful than her father and overthrows him

The Linch

He is an ancient cosmic being who is the manifestation of the inevitable death of all things. His essence was deposited on Earth millions of years before the start of the show via a catalyst comet, but came into physical being near the end of the Mushroom War from a "mutagenic bomb" after he possessed a person who had been submerged in mutagenic waste.[1][2] His first appearance is in "His Hero" where the hero Billy casts him down. He was imprisoned in the ancient tree in the Candy Kingdom, but escapes and plays a significant role in "Mortal Folly", "Mortal Recoil", "The Lich", "Finn the Human", and "Jake the Dog". The Lich goes on to kill Prismo and releases the criminals in the Crystal Citadel in "Wake Up" and "Escape from the Citadel". However, by the end of the later episode, the Lich is turned into a harmless baby by the Citadel Guardian's healing blood and is adopted by Tree Trunks and Mr. Pig, and renamed "Sweet Pig-Trunks", or "Sweet P" for short.

Hunson Abadeer

Hunson Abadeer (a.k.a. the Lord of Evil[1]) is Marceline's father and the ruler of the Nightosphere. He is a powerful, deathless demon who is full of chaotic evil. He also enjoys consuming the souls of others, but does not spend much time out of the Nightosphere. He first appears in "It Came from the Nightosphere", wherein it is revealed that he has a shaky parent-to-teen relationship with his daughter. However, Hunson manages to reaffirm his love for Marceline just before being sent back into the Nightosphere. In "Memory of a Memory," Finn sees a flashback of him eating his daughter's French fries, an incident that caused a rift in their relationship and led to Marceline writing her "Fry Song." He reappears in "Daddy's Little Monster," trying to trick Marceline into taking over the Nightosphere. He appears again in "Marcy & Hunson," where Peppermint Butler summons him to Ooo to power up a new Night Sword for Finn, and he stays for a day to visit Marceline. He is an embodiment of chaos and claims to be "completely evil" (these are later suggested to be effects of the Nightosphere amulet). He also shows appreciation for things he deems to be greatly evil; in "It Came from the Nightosphere," he comments that Gunter is the "most evil thing [he] has encountered" (foreshadowing Gunter's reveal as Orgalorg). Gunter, the Ice King, Jake and Finn were the only souls that were spared during his rampage through Ooo. In addition, Hunson Abadeer is shown to be rational, cold and calculating. However, he is not totally emotionless, as he appears to be deeply moved by hearing his daughter's song. He confirmed that he loves Marceline, and that he was deeply sorry he ate her fries, never meaning to hurt her.

Ice Kingdom

It comprises of many pointy, snow-capped mountains, as well as several snowy hills. It is the location of the Ice King's castle as well as home to a variety of ice-themed creatures. This is where the animated short takes place and is also the place that the Princess are held captive in "Prisoners of Love". The Ice Kingdom's population is fairly sparse, especially compared to other kingdoms in Ooo. The population consists mostly of penguins, with the occasional elemental creatures conjured by the Ice King himself. The castle is basically a hollow mountain capped by snow and ice, with the main entrance being a face-like set of windows near the top. Ice King's main living room contains a fancy bed, a drum kit, and weightlifting equipment. The room usually has underpants and old pizza boxes strewn across the floor. There is also a cage where Ice King keeps his kidnapped princesses. There are several secret rooms, including what appears to be a basement filled with monsters and technology seen in "What is Life?" and a secret chamber full of ninja collectibles seen in "The Chamber of Frozen Blades". In the episode "Princess Monster Wife", it is shown there is a large network of tunnels and open spaces in the castle, one having herds of Ice Bulls, as well as a kitchen and dining room. In the episode "Beyond this Earthly Realm", it is shown Ice King has a room in his basement with a portal to the Spirit World, which is actually the Mystery Cave. This room seems to have fog billowing on the floors. In "I Remember You", Ice King has a "The Past" room, where he keeps memorabilia of himself and some objects that he had when he was still Simon Petrikov. It is revealed in "Frost & Fire" that the Ice Castle can be controlled like a giant robot. This castle, along with presumably everything in it, is destroyed by Flame Princess. Ice King then moves in with Finn and Jake and leaves the reconstruction of his kingdom to Gunter and the other penguins.

Fire Kingdom

The Fire Kingdom is a state ruled by Flame Princess and home to most of the Flame People in Ooo. It is entirely composed of volcanoes and seas of lava. Its monarchy reside in the Fire Palace. The Fire Kingdom makes its first major appearance in "Thank You" and is the primary setting of "Incendium", "Ignition Point", and "The Cooler". The majority of its inhabitants consider themselves to be evil, including the king. Fire wolf packs are scattered about the kingdom and are free to run inside the palace. It first appears in "Evicted!" in a flashback that shows Marceline hula-hooping in a sea of flames. It is possible that the Fire Count ruled the land in the past, as a flashback in "His Hero" shows him wearing a crown in what appears to be the kingdom. The Flame King formerly ruled the Fire Kingdom, until he was deposed by his own daughter

The Candy Kingdom

The Candy Kingdom is a post-war state located within the Land of Ooo. It is entirely made up of candy and is primarily inhabited by the Candy People. The kingdom was founded by Princess Bubblegum hundreds of years before the events of Adventure Time and it was under her reign for a long time (except when she was too young to rule and Earl of Lemongrab was, as of "Too Young", regent) until "Hot Diggity Doom" due to losing an election to King of Ooo. She would eventually reclaim her throne after King of Ooo is rebelled against by the Candy People in "The Dark Cloud". The kingdom is one of the largest civilizations in Ooo as it is well-developed and even has interests in the affairs of the other kingdoms. In "Red Starved," Princess Bubblegum refers to the kingdom as an "eternal empire." Over 800 years ago, as depicted in flashbacks in "Bonnie and Neddy", shortly after being formed from the Mother Gum, Neddy is seen sucking the tree that grew into the tree in the middle of the Candy Kingdom were he still sucks it and produces the juice which later the Candy Kingdom and its citizens would use for bathing and for its healing properties. In "Bonnibel Bubblegum" it was revealed that around 800 years before the main events of the series, Bonnibel Bubblegum was lonely and wanted have more family than just Neddy, as the two lived in a cabin where the central tree grew. Wanting relatives, she created Uncle Gumbald, Aunt Lolly and Cousin Chicle. They lived peacefully and built a candy town and planted taffy trees. However, Gumbald cut down the taffy trees to build a log cabin. He revealed to his niece that he had plans to build a candy city. Bonnie however, did not like that idea so she used a butterscotch bomb to make Lake Butterscotch where Gumbald intended to build the city. This infuriated Gumbald but, he had a backup plan. Gumbald then created a "boyfriend" for Bonnibel, Mr. Cream Puff, and sent them away for a date.

Lumpy Space

Lumpy Space is a cloud-like cityscape in another dimension that is home to the Lumpy Space People. The portal to enter Lumpy Space is located in the Cotton Candy Forest, inside of a frog sitting on a mushroom and requires a password. In Volume 5 of the Adventure Time comics, the password is revealed to be "how many beans you have eaten in the past year". A portal is seen in the frog's mouth, and the ones entering are "eaten" by the frog and pulled into Lumpy Space. The frog questioned Lumpy Space Princess about "non-lumpers" entering. It is hinted that there are other entrances to Lumpy Space. Lumpy Space Princess is part of the royal family of Lumpy Space. In Lumpy Space, non-lumpy people are referred to as "smooth," "non-lumpers," or "smoothies."

The Treehouse

The Tree House is a "guard outpost"[citation needed] on the edge of the Candy Kingdom, as well as the home of Finn, Jake, Shelby, BMO, and Neptr, and where they can usually be found when they aren't adventuring. It was formerly owned by Marceline, as revealed in "Evicted!" The fort includes a living room, a bedroom, a kitchen, a pond, a well, a bathroom, a chicken coop, a treasure room, an attic, a storage cave/garage (shown in "What is Life?"), a secret place (shown in "Dad's Dungeon") and a wide look-out view. In "Come Along With Me", the Tree House was destroyed by one of GOLB's monsters, and later in the episode Finn and Jake planted another tree with Fern's remains, as it was his dying wish. Fern's tree is similar in appearance to the old one, with the exception of a home inside it, and it also has a new Finn Sword growing out of it. One thousand years later, this tree had grown to a massive size before Shermy and Beth climb to the top and claim the sword. The tree itself is a weeping willow.[1] It has a main canopy and three smaller canopies which branch out from the center. The canopies are connected by narrow wooden bridges. Built into the base of the tree is a wooden shack from which the rooms inside the canopy can be accessed. Various decorations, including windows, flags, and chimneys, can be seen sticking out of the canopy.
