Giyu is one of the core members of the Hashira, a group of the Corps' top-ranked assassins. A calm and stoic man, Giyuu has a reserved personality and always wore a serious expression on his face. He is shown to have a strong sense of justice with no tolerance for those who do not know their own limitations and waste their lives. Although he feels a deep hatred towards demons and never hesitates to kill one, he was able to go against the Demon Extermination Corps' rules by protecting Nezuko Kamado upon realizing that she might be different from the rest of the demons, and even agreed to sacrifice his life for the sake of her and her brother, Tanjiro Kamado by committing sepukku if the young girl were to eat a human. Tomioka Giyu, the “Pillar of Water”, is undoubtedly one of the most talented demon hunters and swordsmen in the history of Kimetsu no Yaiba, being able to occupy the position of Hashira and supplant his master Sakonji Urokodaki, who previously held this title. His family tried to drag him to a relative who was a well-known doctor in the field of mental illnesses and disorders, but he knew that everything that had happened that time was real: his family had been killed by demons. While he was being taken to his relative, Tomioka managed to escape into the mountains, where he was only able to survive thanks to his encounter with the Water Pillar, Sakonki Urokodaki, who would save him from some demons.
