Location

The Hawaiian Islands are situated about 2,400 miles southwest of California and about 3,850 miles southeast of Japan. They are part of Polynesia, a region of Oceania. The main islands include Hawaii (Big Island), Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau, and Kahoolawe.

Social structure

Ancient Hawaiian society was highly stratified. At the top were the ali'i (chiefs), who ruled over the land and people. Below them were the kahuna (priests and skilled professionals), maka'āinana (commoners), and kauā (outcasts or slaves).

Religion

Religion played a central role in Hawaiian life. They believed in a pantheon of gods and spirits, including Kane (creator god), Lono (god of peace and agriculture), Ku (god of war), and Kanaloa (god of the ocean). Religious practices included ceremonies, rituals, and the construction of heiau (temples).

Oral Tradition

Much of Hawaiian history and culture was passed down orally through chants (mele), stories, and legends. The hula, a traditional dance, was a way to tell stories and honor the gods.

Subsistence

Ancient Hawaiians were skilled fishermen and farmers. They cultivated taro (kalo) in irrigated fields (lo'i), grew sweet potatoes, yams, breadfruit, and other crops, and practiced aquaculture with fishponds (loko i'a).

Housing

They lived in thatched houses (hale) made from local materials such as grass, ti leaves, and wood.

Craftsmanship

They were adept at creating tools, weapons, and everyday items from stone, wood, bones, and other natural materials. They also made kapa (bark cloth) for clothing and bedding.

Social Activities

Feasts (lu'au), games, and sports like surfing (he'e nalu) and traditional Hawaiian wrestling (lua) were important aspects of social life.

Navigation and Voyaging

Hawaiians were expert navigators, using stars, ocean currents, and wind patterns to travel vast distances across the Pacific Ocean in canoes (wa'a).
