Sendō's mother died after giving birth, so he spent his early years growing up with his father and paternal grandmother, raised under the motto "you must protect those around you". When he was very young, his father, who was a firefighter, died while rescuing a boy the same age as Sendō during a fire. Sendō greatly admired his father and this loss was very hard on him, but he was proud of all of his actions, being what made him seek strength as he grew older and continued to follow his advice in trying to help others. Sendō began helping others by defending defenseless students from bullies, establishing his own justice. However, his grandmother mentions that Sendō did this to protect innocent civilians from other criminal gangs. Sendō began helping his grandmother run her market, as as he grew older, he needed help. Over time, Sendō became very violent with his form of "justice". During high school, his homeroom teacher showed interest in helping him, as well as stepping in whenever violence was mentioned, trying to steer Sendō back onto the right path. During his high school years, Sendō was already one of the most feared street fighters and gang leaders in Osaka, not attacking innocent people, but defending the weak. At some point during high school, many of his fellow delinquents were eliminated while in Nagoya. Because of that, Sendō set out with his gang to find the one responsible and make him pay for what he had done to them. When he reached the culprit, Sawamura Ryūhei of Sawamurale High School begged Sendō to stop. Kawabe explained Sawamura's lonely past to Sendō, where Kawabe was the only one who helped Sawamura and begged Sendō to become Sawamura's friend to save Sawamura from his loneliness. Sendō, however-

A coach watched this event from afar as Sendō emerged victorious from the fight. Sendō, intense as he was, attacked Kawabe, without hesitation, only to nearly be counterattacked, as he was once a boxer. Soon after, Sendō was impressed by boxing and began following Yanaoka. His career had begun, with Yanaoka's help and the assistance of his teacher during his time in high school, he became a professional boxer at the age of 18, with his goal in mind to fight the strongest fighters in the area.

Sendō, befitting his street fighter origins, is an instinctive infighter who is hard with his punches. He possesses incredible lower and upper body strength, comparable to Ippo Makunouchi, though his optimal striking distance is actually mid-range. He is almost savage in his approach to fighting, relying on pure instincts, rather than technique to avoid injury in his bouts and constantly aiming for a victory by KO. His punching power in particular is one of the greatest in the world for his weight class, if not the greatest, already on par with Ippo. However, while Ippo relies on compact combinations, Sendō puts all of his power into every single punch, making each of them a likely one-hit KO. Sendō's fighting instinct is one of his most dangerous tools aside from his punching power, as it makes him incredibly unpredictable when facing him. He has an innate intuition of where to strike, as well as where his opponents' blows might come from. He was able to predict Saeki's movements and see through his attempted feints and even intervened in one of Alfredo Gonzalez's counterattacks during their fight through his animal sixth sense. Furthermore, he can deliver strong and accurate strikes from obscure angles, such as landing a Smash after being hit by one of Volg's punches, using where he would be to aim, knocking Nargo over his guard without the strength of his legs despite not looking at him, landing a right Smash to the solar plexus on Alfredo after he adjusted his punches to hit him in his "safe zones", and forcing dual exchanges during his combinations to land a blow. Tactically, he is powerful with his punches and uses wide strikes to instill a sense of fear in his opponent, which he uses to set his pace. In certain situations, the pressure of Sendō's punches can cause boxers to hesitate, allowing him to take advantage, such as against Nargo and Alfredo, with the latter seeing his counter-punching accuracy significantly decrease during his match with Sendō. Sendō can also throw compact punches without input, making them difficult for an opponent to predict. He has demonstrated a powerful dash developed through hours of running with ankle weights. Sendō's prideful nature means that he will very rarely take a step back or retreat during a match, which has proven to be a rudimentary but effective natural hallmark for techniques such as the Dempsey Roll which rely on uninterrupted rhythms and starting distance.

Ippo Makanaochi: At the start of the series, Ippo is a 16-year-old high school student. He is a kind and reserved person who dislikes fighting, having been bullied since elementary school. He has a sturdy body and stable legs thanks to years of working at the family fishing shop, and possesses great courage against all enemies. Despite his strength and courage, Ippo behaves rather meek outside the ring and often grovels around his rivals. For example, even though he has defeated both Ryo Mashiba and Takeshi Sendo, he fears Mashiba, and tries to avoid a second argument with Sendo and a third rematch when he is around. He also continued to be bullied by Masahiko Umezawa, his former bully, long after he had started boxing. He has great respect for his teammate Mamoru Takamura and former All Japan Featherweight Champion Eiji Date, who was surprised when World Featherweight Champion Ricardo Martinez asked him to fight him. His dream is to one day face Ichiro Miyata in the ring as professionals, which is why they are referred to as eternal rivals by others. Despite these feelings towards other boxers, he also seems to view each other as friends, and Ippo even refers to Miyata as Miyata-kun. He takes his pride in the help of his friends and fellow boxers, most notably Ippo, whom he has personally taken under his wing. His current goal is to win the next four heavyweight divisions, thereby conquering the top six categories of professional boxing. - Ichiro Miyata: He is Ippo's great rival, they fight for the first time when Ippo is a rookie and Ippo wins the fight, they swear to fight in the Japanese rookie finals but Miyata fails to reach the final, which causes him to leave the country in search of improving his level.
