Chrollo Lucilfer

Appearance

Two of Chrollo's distinguishing features are his cross-shaped tattoo on his forehead and a pair of orb-shaped earrings. He is usually seen wearing a leather trench coat with a furry collar and the Cross of Saint Peter embroidered on the back. Prior to the founding of the Phantom Troupe, Chrollo never wore the jacket, nor did he slick his hair back. When approaching Neon Nostrade in order to steal her Nen ability, he wears a blue jacket, with his hair hanging down naturally and the cross tattoo hidden behind a bandage around his forehead. His spider tattoo is located on his right arm in the 1999 anime series. He is a man with an imposing aura, quite attractive and strong.

Personality

Chrollo is a calm young man, as well as being intelligent and charismatic. He appears to be a born leader, able to keep the Phantom Troupe together despite the volatile personalities of its members, and well versed in the art of strategy. He always has at least two people accompanying him, which is why Hisoka was unable to fight him during his stay at the Ryodan. [2] After he has admired the items he acquired, Chrollo sells them all. [3] It is also stated that Chrollo has a fondness for ancient books. The only people Chrollo seems to care about are his fellow members of the Phantom Troupe. When Chrollo reads Neon's prophecy containing Uvogin's death, he cries for him. He later organizes a massacre of members of the mob as a requiem for his fallen comrade. On top of that, he shows no fear of his own death, even anticipated. Senritsu has stated that his heart sounded as if he were happy living next to death. To Chrollo, the Phantom Troupe is more important than his own life. He once stressed at a group meeting that the survival of the group comes before the well-being of the leader. To him, the Spider boss is just another branch that can be sacrificed for the survival of the Spider. Despite this, he is cold-blooded and an inhuman mass murderer of a sadistic nature, as he and all of his Brigade members (with the possible exception of Bonolenov) casually and without remorse commit heinous crimes, such as the massacre of the Kurta clan in order to obtain their eyeballs. There is also an implied hostility between Chrollo and Silva Zoldyck, possibly stemming from their previous encounter, and Silva's murder of a Brigade member.

personality

Chrollo is a skilled actor and quite manipulative, as shown when he meets and "befriends" Neon Nostrade who tells him of her ability to reveal fortunes. During this time, he presents himself as a kind and helpful man, always enthusiastic and smiling, who also shows curiosity; while in fact, Chrollo only intends to learn about Neon's ability as one of the requirements for stealing. Chrollo is a specialist, like Kurapika (when his eyes turn scarlet); he is a combination of the other five types, but in a way that no normal Nen user can utilize. Chrollo's Nen ability is called Skill Hunter (盗賊の極意, Bandit's Secret) which allows him to steal other people's Hatsu to use for his own use through a book known as the "Bandit's Secret". The victim of the theft, of course, no longer has access to their abilities. The theft occurs under strict conditions: He must witness the Nen ability with his own eyes. He must ask about the ability and be answered by the victim. The victim's palm must touch the handprint on the cover of the book "The Bandit's Secret." All of the above must be done within one hour. To use one of the stolen abilities, he first invokes the "Bandit's Secret" and turns the page of the desired ability. While using an ability, Chrollo must turn the page with the ability on it and the book must remain open in his right hand; this means that he could only have access to one chosen ability at a time. Additionally, the ability disappears from the book if its former owner dies. It is also unknown if his victims are able to gain their Nen abilities back if the book is destroyed. Zeno Zoldyck correctly guessed that he must endure 4-5 difficulties before he can steal an ability. Aside from that, he is a well-skilled Zetsu user, and generally very proficient in any of the basic aspects of Nen.

Chrollo is first seen at a Phantom Troupe group meeting in an abandoned part of town on August 31. He orders the Troupe to steal all of the items from the mob's underground auction and eliminate anyone who gets in their way. On the night of September 1st, he, Phinks, Kortopi, Bonolenov, Pakunoda and Hisoka remain in their lair while the other 7 members sneak into the building where the auction is being held and kill all the mobsters and guests there, only to find an empty vault because the items to be auctioned were already relocated elsewhere just hours before their arrival. On the way back in a hot air balloon, Uvogin calls Chrollo on the phone, saying that he suspects there is a traitor in the Brigade. Chrollo thinks there is an informant, but that person is not among them. He then tells Uvogin and the others to cause a large disturbance to attract the Shadow Beasts, one of which, Owl, was the one who removed the auction items. Following orders, Uvogin slaughters the mob and four Shadow Beasts in the Goldo Desert,[4] but is captured by Kurapika moments later. His companions follow him, but are stopped by the rest of the Shadow Beasts. They kill the rest, except for Owl, who is captured and the auction items taken from him. Near midnight, they find Uvogin's whereabouts and free him, after killing Dalzollene.[2] Uvogin, however, insists on taking revenge on Kurapika,[3] which results in his death at Kurapika's hands on September 2 in the Goldo Desert. On September 3, thanks to a photo of Neon Nostrade appearing on the Hunters' website, Chrollo finds her and approaches her. Neon escapes from her bodyguards and goes to the auction that was being rescheduled. [6] After helping her enter the Graveyard Building, Chrollo asks her to read his fortune.

As the Brigade continues their attack on the mob, Chrollo is cornered in the basement of the building by two elite assassins, Zeno and Silva Zoldyck. [9] Noticing that Zeno is an incredible fighter, Chrollo fights him off in an attempt to steal his abilities. However, Zeno notices this and holds him at a distance, pinning him to a wall, while Silva attacks him with two aura spheres, which cause a large explosion that collapses everything around them. [10] Just before the Zoldycks finish them off, Illumi Zoldyck calls out to them and tells them that the Ten Quirks have been eliminated, as he killed them after being hired by Chrollo. Since his clients are dead, they spare his life and leave him. Chrollo calls the other members, and they are told not to touch the ambulance taking Neon to the hospital and to continue with their plan,[11] so they make use of Kortopi's ability, and create fake corpses of five of them, to fool the mob,[12] they take the auction items and sell the copies at the auction taking place on the tenth floor of the building.[11] After that, he and the rest of the Brigade gather at their hideout to celebrate their victory.[12] The next day, September 4, Chrollo orders the Brigade to leave the city, but Nobunaga insists on finding Kurapika.[13] To persuade Nobunaga, he uses the ability he stole from Neon Nostrade to make prophecies about all the members, which say that 5 of them will die if they team up with the chain user within the next two weeks. They attempt to leave for Meteor City to avoid this fate,[14] but Hisoka alters his prophecy to manipulate the group, convincing them to stay in the city so he would have his chance to fight Chrollo.

Chrollo then deduces that Kurapika is Neon's bodyguard, and thanks to the fake pair of Scarlet Eyes he bought the night before, they know that they are staying at the Beitacle Hotel, 2.5 km away from their hideout. Chrollo orders Kortopi, Machi, Nobunaga, Pakunoda, and Shizuku to go with him to the hotel. [16][17] On their way, they notice that they are being followed by two people. He tells Kortopi, Nobunaga, and Pakunoda to go ahead, while he, Machi, and Shizuku stay behind. They then capture Gon and Killua again. [18] Meanwhile, Pakunoda and his group are able to learn Kurapika's name and face, after capturing and killing Squala. [19] Chrollo, Machi, and Shizuku take the two children to the hotel[19] and meet up with Pakunoda's group. Chrollo tells Pakunoda to check the children's minds, but just as he is about to reveal what he knows about Kurapika, a power outage occurs, allowing Gon and Killua to escape. Machi and Nobunaga easily catch them again, despite the darkness. However, when the light returns, they realize that Chrollo has been captured by Kurapika. Phinks, Feitan, and Shalnark arrive at the hotel. They then receive a call from Kurapika, who tells them not to follow him, not to hurt his hostages, and to give the phone to Pakunoda. He then tells him to meet alone at Ringon Airport, to negotiate the hostage exchange. [21] Chrollo, who is sitting next to Kurapika in the car, is beaten by him, but finds out that Kurapika puts his friends above all else, which he considers a vital weakness, and hopes that Paku will not follow his instructions and that they will go to the airport together. [22] Phinks, Feitan, and Shalnark try to follow Paku, but Nobunaga stops them as he fears that Chrollo will end up dead if they don't follow the instructions, the argument escalates between Phinks and Nobunaga. Eventually, Machi and Shizuku discuss Melody's ability and decide to return to the hideout, following the instructions. [21]

When Kurapika and Pakunoda meet at the airport, he puts his chains on their hearts, forbidding them from using Nen and communicating with their comrades, and tells Paku to return before midnight with Gon and Killua. When he returns to the hideout, Paku tells the others about his conditions, but Phinks becomes angry and wants to get rid of the children and go after Kurapika,[23] but Machi and Kortopi disagree with him.[24] They nearly start fighting against Phinks and Feitan, who thinks that she and the others are being manipulated by Kurapika, but their fight is interrupted by Gon. Phinks eventually agrees to the conditions, after Franklin tells him that if he continues to be stubborn, he may split up the group. Just before the exchange, Hisoka appears and threatens to kill the children if he cannot go with Paku to fight Chrollo. Kurapika has no choice but to let him go with them. When Chrollo is released,[24] Hisoka reveals that he was never a true member of the group and challenges him to a duel. Seeing this, Chrollo laughs and tells Hisoka that there is no point in fighting now since he cannot use Nen. Losing interest, Hisoka lets him go, as he heads west, to fulfill the prophecy given to him by Neon.
