Definition

Persephone is the daughter of the goddess Demeter, the goddess of harvest and fertility, and Zeus, the supreme god. Persephone is often associated with the mythological motif of the changing of the seasons. A central story surrounding Persephone is her abduction by Hades, the god of the underworld. Hades kidnapped her to make her his wife. Her mother Demeter was so distraught over her loss that she stopped the growth of plants on earth, causing a great famine. Eventually Zeus intervened and a compromise was found: Persephone would spend part of the year with Hades in the underworld and the rest of the year with her mother on earth. This mythological narrative is often interpreted as an explanation for the origin of the seasons, with Persephone's time in the underworld symbolizing winter and her return to earth symbolizing spring.
