When the Third Angel tries to escape from Betania Base, Mari takes control of the Evangelion Provisional Unit 05 and tries to stop him, reaching the surroundings of the Aqueron zone and managing to attack him. After taking a lot of damage and with no other option, Mari drives the self-destruct, but not before asking for forgiveness from her EVA, being ejected into the Entry Plug and destroying a large part of the base and the Third Angel. Later, Mari parachutes into Tokyo-3, but accidentally lands on a stunned Shinji while he's on the school's rooftop. After recovering, she recognizes his identity as an EVA pilot from the smell of LCL, then introduces herself to the stunned boy. Fourteen years after the failed Third Impact, Mari became a member of WILLE and the current pilot of Evangelion Unit 08. During this time, she became friends with Asuka Langley Shikinami, whom she nicknamed "Princess". After finding the missing EVA-01, the girl accompanied Asuka in their respective Evangelions into space, to rescue Shinji. When the Fourth Impact ends, the girl is in charge of taking Shinji out of his Entry Plug, telling him before that he can at least go help the princess (Asuka) and that he should go see the world.
