On the night of June 2, 2011, a horde of zombies crossed the border from Mexico to Arizona. About 15 minutes before sunset, they arrived in Sangre de Cristo, a small, poor town of less than sixty inhabitants, inhabited mostly by Mexican Americans. The zombies took the town completely by surprise. The zombies swept through Sangre de Cristo in a direct path north, slaughtering and devouring everyone they encountered. They first attacked the fields south of the town, killing twelve farmers and Ron Templeton, a hunter from nearby Hinzman. They then entered the center of town and slaughtered most of the town's population, killing dozens in the streets or in their homes. Some people, overwhelmed by the horror of what was happening, chose to kill themselves or their loved ones rather than be torn apart by the horde. Pastor Duane Putnam killed his wife and son before the mission was overwhelmed, and eight people decided to jump off the town's water tower. At 8:30 p.m., perhaps 45 minutes after the attack began, the zombies reached the town's preschool on the north side, where they killed the teacher and nine small children. Afterward, they apparently headed back into the desert, still moving north. They left virtually all the inhabitants of Sangre de Cristo dead in their wake. In total, fifty-seven people died. Most of the bodies were mangled and bloody, and some disappeared entirely, suggesting they were either completely devoured or reanimated.

The only survivor was 38-year-old Francisca Salazar, who lived in a trailer on the southern edge of Sangre de Cristo and began fleeing north as soon as the attack began. She ran through the besieged town in hopes of saving the Putnam family, with whom she was very close, before fleeing east when she witnessed their deaths. Salazar was an avid and compulsive photographer, and captured nearly the entire course of the massacre in a series of 36 photos, from the arrival of the zombies to Grace Putnam's death in preschool. Unfortunately, these photos were not immediately discovered, so Salazar was blamed for the massacre, convicted of murder, and sentenced to death.

Nothing is known about the origin of the zombies, except that they probably came from Mexico or somewhere further south and have been steadily heading north. The first signs of the coming disaster appeared in the mid-2000s, when Border Patrol began finding the bodies of migrants bitten by unknown predators. This suggests that zombies had been stalking the deserts of the US-Mexico border for some years before the massacre, attacking illegal immigrants and other vulnerable people.

The zombies appear only in Salazar's photos and in brief footage of a later attack. In the photographs, they are humanoid but clearly monstrous, with wide eyes that seem to glow in the dark. Some of them appear to have rotting or demonic features, though this may be due to motion blur in the photographs. In his interview with police, Salazar says the zombies look like the people they used to be, except they are obviously dead.
