Biography

Tom Marvolo Riddle was born on 31 December 1926 at the Wool Orphanage in London, England. His pure-blood mother, Merope Gaunt, a direct descendant of Salazar Slytherin, staggered up the stairs of the orphanage and was taken in, an hour later she gave birth to a baby boy and within another hour Merope died but before she died the witch christened her son after his father, Tom Riddle Sr, and his middle name after his grandfather, Marvolo Gaunt. Tom Riddle Sr. had been a wealthy Muggle resident of the village of Little Hangleton who had become romantically involved with Merope Gaunt possibly under the influence of a love potion. After a time, Merope possibly withdrew the use of the magical solution in the hope that the young man had truly fallen in love with her, or at least would stay for the sake of her unborn child. However, the muggle abandoned her and Tom, and later went to live in his parents' mansion.

Tom Riddle was raised at the Wool Orphanage, growing up completely unaware of his magical heritage. At the orphanage, the caretakers treated the children coldly and harshly and the quality of the orphanage was poor, causing Tom to hate the orphanage. However, he did come to realise certain innate abilities he possessed that were foreign to his peers of the same age, though he did not know how to control them properly. Tom could move objects with his mind and make them go where he wanted, manipulate animals and creatures as he wished, speak Parseltongue, and use these abilities to hurt other children who insulted or injured him. He used his powers to torment several of his peers, including stealing their possessions and hiding them in a cupboard, and luring young Dennis Bishop and Amy Benson into a cave where he carried out a horrifying act that traumatised the other two children. Tom was surprisingly sadistic, and once when he argued with Billy Stubbs, he hanged his rabbit from the rafters. When he was eleven, Tom was visited by Albus Dumbledore to tell him that he was a wizard and that he had been selected to study at Hogwarts. Dumbledore sees through Tom's sadism and forbids him from stealing at Hogwarts, as he finds Tom stealing other people's things. When Dumbledore offers to accompany Tom to buy supplies for Hogwarts, Tom, who was self-sufficient, declines the offer.

Upon arriving at Hogwarts, Tom was instantly sorted into Slytherin. He immediately stood out as a brilliant, polite and knowledge-hungry student, which quickly won him the sympathy of the teaching staff, except for Professor Dumbledore. Tom knew that, when he met him at the orphanage, the excitement of the first moment made him reveal too much, so from then on he was very cautious with him. He assumed that since his mother was dead, she couldn't be a witch, otherwise she would have been able to prevent it. So he searched for Tom Riddle Sr. on trophy plaques, in Head Boy records, and in the history books of the wizarding community, until he had to accept that his father had never been to Hogwarts. Then he set about searching for his maternal relatives; knowing that his grandfather was called Marvolo, he went all the way to the Gaunts, and to Salazar Slytherin himself, and discovered that he could speak Parseltongue because of his Slytherin descent. Before 1942, Tom found out that his father was a Muggle and abandoned him and his mother. This caused Tom to start to deeply hate his father and all Muggles, considering them all the same as him. Because of these beliefs, several students with the same beliefs began to accompany and follow Tom. He considered them as his followers but never as his friends. Together with them, he began to cause atrocities with black magic in Hogwarts, but they were never blamed. Tom hated his father so much that he decided to change his name, since it was the same as his father, so he scrambled the letters of his name and called himself "Lord Voldemort".

After Hogwarts

When Tom Riddle finished Hogwarts, he had the highest grades, was a prefect and Head Boy, and great things were expected of him. At that time, the post of Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher had become vacant, and Tom went to Professor Dippet to apply for the job, but the headmaster turned him down as he was too young (he was only eighteen). Dippet mentioned this to Professor Dumbledore, who advised him not to give him the job, although he did not explain why. On the one hand, Dumbledore knew what Hogwarts meant to Riddle, that it was like home to him; on the other hand, although he had deciphered many of the secrets of the castle, Riddle was convinced that there were still more to discover; and finally, as a teacher he would have had a great influence on the students, as he had learned from Professor Slughorn. Shortly after, he started working at Borgin and Burkes, a shop specializing in the purchase and sale of valuable items, especially those related to dark magic. Those who knew him were very surprised and disappointed that such a brilliant young man like him was working as a shop assistant. However, Tom was not just a shop assistant; he had a special charisma and a great talent for persuasion.
