Eizen was very proud of the Yamada clan and believed that no task was impossible for them when it came to executing people. As an executioner, he acted professionally in his line of work as he knew that desecrating the execution grounds by trying to cause pain to the condemned with his sword would desecrate the magistrate and followed the Yamada clan's ideal way of ending lives by cutting down their victims with no pain or emotion, a concept he tried to pass on to a young Shugen. Yamada Asaemon Eizen (山田浅ェ門衛えい善ぜん) was the first-ranking Asaemon of the Yamada clan. After the shogun asked the death row convicts to acquire the Elixir of Life from the dangerous island believed to be Shinsenkyō in exchange for a pardon for their past crimes, Eizen joined the expedition team as one of Yamada Asaemon's monitors and was assigned to keep an eye on the criminal Rokurōta. Eizen had a profound influence on Shugen, as he was the one person the young man admired the most. Before leaving for Kotaku, Eizen promised Shugen that he would report back on the second day, causing him to become suspicious of his time on the island after three days had passed and cry in his absence. Shugen later made it his goal to have Eizen and the other Asaemons return home in one piece after the shogun ordered him to travel to the island with a second team.
