Nanami is a tall, well-built man with light brown hair styled in a neat part. Nanami has very thin eyebrows and small eyes that are usually covered by his signature sunglasses, which do not have arms that wrap around his ears. As befits a former office worker, Nanami is usually fully dressed in a business suit. His usual outfit consists of a white dress shirt underneath a tan jacket with matching pants and light shoes. Attached to his dress shirt is a sheath that sheathes Nanami's blunt sword, hidden by the back of his jacket. He also sports a tie that shares the same dot pattern as the bandages around his blunt sword. After graduating from Jujutsu High and working for a company, Nanami wore a vertically striped jacket over a white button-down shirt and a dark-colored tie with white dots all over it, vertically striped pants, and black shoes. As a student, Nanami wore a normal Jujutsu High uniform. Her hair was styled slightly differently when she was younger.

Nanami is a very intelligent and reserved man, often appearing so calm and indifferent that it both puts him off and alienates him. He seems to be the type of person who takes work too seriously, but Nanami knows how to distinguish sentimentality from service. In most conversations, he is straightforward and doesn't mind unrealistic optimism or questions that need to be explained. Also, Nanami is very keen on expressing his anger quickly, using facial expressions as well as verbally. Nanami is usually very impatient. He hates working overtime and is very serious about not putting in a minute more than he asked for. Under his tough exterior, Nanami is very sociable and doesn't mind intelligent conversations. He is also very practical at times, and is almost ridiculously overly serious at times. He claimed that he became a contortionist only because he was an idiot instead of a salaryman. Nanami, who plays one of Yuji's mentors, is in stark contrast to Satoru, who is more outspoken and easygoing. Yuji and Satoru describe Nanami as "gloomy", the former thinking that they won't get along at first.
