Persona Attributes

joy

Personality As her name would suggest, Joy is vivacious and has a cheerful, peppy and optimistic attitude, mainly wanting the best for Riley. However, this causes her to act somewhat selfishly towards the other emotions, particularly Sadness, as Joy likes to be in control of how Riley feels. While she thinks of herself as a people person, Joy grows easily frustrated with anyone who doesn't share her worldview. She's happiest when she's in charge, and she's confident that her way is always the right way. As the movie goes on, Joy, learns to accept Sadness as an integral part of Riley's mind. Amy Poehler stated "Joy goes through her own journey in the film: She realizes that she has to also be sad. And so when we were working on the character together, it was like: What level are we at in the beginning? Can we modulate that? And how does she change?" Appearance Joy has light amber skin, sky-blue hair in a pixie cut and large azure blue eyes. She wears a light chartreuse summer dress adorned with blue flower-like motifs and is the only emotion not wearing pants or shoes, but her barefeet do not have toes. She is surrounded by a blue halo and emits a bright, golden light, which is brighter than any of the other emotions.

sadness

Personality Sadness and Joy are polar opposites. While Joy is outgoing and ferociously optimistic, Sadness is slow, shy, pessimistic, and more prone to lie on the ground. Though joyful events can get her to smile (such as when Riley scores her first goal), she is usually pessimistic and consistently sees the negative side of things. Like the other emotions, she trusts Joy to know what's right for Riley. She finds herself unhelpful in comparison, and is desperate that she can't get herself to see things from the same angle as Joy. She is insecure, and lives with the idea that her actions are bad and that she may be harmful for Riley. But the fact is, Sadness is intelligent and in her slowness she is more thoughtful. She has deep empathy and compassion for others and their troubles, and can bring people in need together. She has a good instinct of what Riley needs when her life begins to change. However, she lacks the confidence to claim she has the right idea. Instead, she tries to repress her actions, which only leads her into expressing them uncontrolled. Over the course of the film, Joy comes to recognize the value of Sadness. The latter in turn comes to gain some self-esteem and to finally take her place at the console. Appearance Sadness has light blue skin, navy blue hair, and sapphire blue eyes. She wears has a white turtleneck sweater, big round dark purple glasses, and navy blue pants and slippers. She has a faint blue glow, though it is usually outshined by Joy's brighter light.

anger

Personality Anger is intelligent, very serious, short, somewhat antagonistic, very reluctant to express sadness or happiness, bitter and hoarse, but has a somewhat underlying caring nature. He has a mean, fiery spirit and tends to explode (literally) when things do not go as planned. As explained by Joy, he really cares that things are fair and differs from Fear, as Joy differs from Sadness. Despite his intention to fix things, he sometimes acts impulsively and does things his own way, like Joy did, resulting in more harm. Appearance Anger is the shortest of the Emotions. He has crimson skin, a bald head, and tan oval eyes. He wears a white shirt and a gray tie with red triangles separated in the middle by a zigzagging line of yellow, as well as a brown belt, maroon trousers and gray shoes. When angry, volcanic bursts of flame burst from his scalp.

fear

Personality Fear, as his name states, is the literal embodiment of primal feelings of being scared and fight-or-flight. He cares very much about Riley's safety and her well-being and is very concerned about the choices Riley makes in her life. Unlike the rest of the Emotions he is wary, jumpy, and suspicious of whatever lies before him since his job requires him to observe that Riley is well-suited in her current environment, as such, he has to consider and evaluate every possible thing that could endanger her. When the other emotions try to take a more dominant role, Fear tends to be the voice of reason to convince them not to go through with potentially risky decisions, such as when Riley decided to run away back to Minnesota. Out of desire to avoid tension, he's usually the pacifist in the group, wanting to make Riley responded properly to her parents without causing aggravation between them and Riley. However, Fear's uncertainty and cowardice can also cause him to turn down decisions that would potentially help Riley. Fear also has a tendency to be sarcastic, especially when he's on Dream Duty, and he hates doing it. Surprisingly, despite being the very definition of being scared, he's not afraid of Riley's nightmares, going as far as to critique and view many of Riley's dreams and nightmares as "cheesy" and "lacking plot lines". As stated in the promotional clip "Shoes of Doom", Fear also claimed that he isn't scared of everything, despite the many things that do indeed scare him on a daily basis (such as the movie of the same name that Riley and the other emotions were watching). Physical appearance Fear is a thin and lanky emotion. He has light purple skin, a long nose, one curled strand of hair, thick black eyebrows, and purple eyes.

disgust

Personality Disgust, as her name suggests, is the literal embodiment of any and all feelings of distain, judgement and revolt. She keeps a watchful eye and is highly skeptical, honest and opinionated of the people Riley finds herself around with, and the things and situations she finds herself in or around, since her main job is to keep Riley from being poisoned, both physically and socially. She is very stubborn of her values and refuses to betray or lower her standards. She is by far the vainest out of the other emotions, being very concerned about her appearance and how Riley is presented, and because of this has an affinity for fashion and the latest trends. She's also full of herself in the sense that she's very certain and confident in her decisions and opinions, but she ultimately does have a softer side that she never wants to admit to. She tends to be sarcastic, insensitive and easily upset, she often leaves the room when a situation or idea greatly offends her and is prone to nausea when she finds something utterly repulsive. She absolutely abhors broccoli more than any of the other emotions. Physical appearance Disgust is a green-skinned emotion who's appearance is based of broccoli, with a rather slender yet curvaceous and petite built, being roughly the same height as Sadness. She has shoulder-length, sparkling forest-green hair and thin eyebrows, emerald-green eyes with exactly four green lengthy eyelashes, and wears makeup which consists of faint pink eyeshadow and blush, and orchid lipstick on her lips. In the sequel, however, she changes her eyeshadow to a forest-green color. Her outfit includes a sparkling orchid-colored tulle ascot-scarf around her neck, a sleeveless parakeet-green dress with a floral-like pattern colored in sky-blue and pale green, with a pair of latex forest-green capri leggings underneath, a mint-green belt with both darker-colored trim and a darker-colored buckle that vaguely resembles the letter "D"and orchid ballet flat

anxiety

Anxiety appears as an orange emotion with a frog-like face, a volcanic eruption like updo of a darker shade of the same color and jade green eyes, orange and white-striped long-wool sweater, brown pants attached by a black belt with a gold button-shaped buckle, and brown shoes Similar to Joy in the first movie, Anxiety is also a control-freak, wanting nothing but to be in control of everything in Riley's life, hating when she is placed on the backseat of the controls, especially if that strays away from her plans. However, she is willing to get rid of everything she sees as unnecessary and/or dangerous to what she perceives as being the right thing for Riley, being extremely pragmatic about it, even if she has to "bottle up" the old emotions or reinvent Riley's entire sense of self. The more Anxiety tried to change things into what she believed to be Riley's best self, she would take even more control over everything, even if was too much for her to handle, until the point she got stuck into her own feelings of anxietyDespite being self-aware and extremely analytical, Anxiety is not without her limits. Her extreme overthinking and insecurities can blind her judgment, causing her to go past her limits and forget what was truly important. Her hardworking and ambitious nature is overshadowed by her restlessness and self-destructive mindset, shown through Riley's feelings of inadequacy through Anxiety's driving. The more Anxiety kept adding to Riley's Sense of Self about trying to become good enough to make the team, the more Riley felt that she really was not good enough, until it became a reality to her, leading to both Riley and Anxiety to have an anxiety attack.Anxiety, like her namesake, is the literal embodiment of any and all feelings of nervousness, tension, stress and the like. She's extremely nervous and anxious about many things, such as meeting preexisting emotions like Joy, especially because she wants to make a good first impression.

envy

Physical appearance Envy is a fairly small emotion compared to the rest of the Emotions, both the new ones and the old ones. She has aquamarine skin, a tiny body, and a head larger than her body. She has neck-length teal hair with some unruly strands tied up in two magenta hair clips. She has big, round aquamarine eyes that always fill with brilliance when she desires what others have. She also has freckles in the middle of her eyes and wears pink blush on her cheeks. Her wardrobe consists of a lilac long-sleeved dress with a magenta collar and white polka dots, brilliant purple leggings, and teal boots. Envy, as her name states, is the literal embodiment of any and all feelings of wishing for, longing for, and ambitious drive and desire for more things in one's life. She is perpetually fascinated by anything she finds beautiful, pretty, or desirable she feels she's lacking in, like Disgust's hairstyle, some cool girls Riley ends up meeting, and the height and appearance of the other emotions. She's always wishing for more, whether that be traits, ideas, abilities etc. and can be extremely enthusiastic about what she desires and will speak loudly for what she wishes for and wants to covet. She also has zero sense of personal space, always wanting to get close and reach out to whatever captivates her in an attempt to grasp it. Her main job is to let Riley know what she wants. This can sometimes clash with Disgust's own role in Riley's mind, whose impeccable taste serves as a filter to anything Riley doesn't need or is perceived as a threat to her, both physically and socially.Envy is somewhat dramatic and easily captivated by things- demonstrating a passionate and curious side to her. Despite being envious she is in no way resentful, but she does have a tendency to get pouty or sad when not able to get to do or attain something

embarrassment

Embarrassment is the one that stands out the most due to his enormous size, and he is the biggest out of all the Emotions; around the same size as Bing Bong. He has bright pink skin, small pink eyes, a very huge, rounded nose in proportion to the size of his head, magenta pink hair and slightly reddened cheeks. His wardrobe consists of a light magenta hooded sweater with a drawstring, purple jeans, and red sneakers with white soles. His nose and cheeks usually blush dark red whenever he gets nervous. Embarrassment, as his name states, is the literal embodiment of any and all feelings of self-consciousness, bashfulness and humiliation. He is shown to be very shy, nervous and skittish around the other emotions and doesn't necessarily have much speaking dialogue due to his timid nature. When interacting with someone else, Embarrassment is very awkward and always fails to respond to a greeting properly (like answering a handshake with a fist bump) and gets easily flustered when receiving and kind of attention even if it's positive (such as Sadness smiling at him or everyone looking at him when he spoke for the first time). Whenever his awkwardness reaches a very high level he can't handle, he hides himself by closing his hoodie around his head, leaving only his big nose out. Embarrassment also can't take second-hand embarrassing situations and he cringes while slamming his nose on the console or in some cases faints. His job is to respond to when Riley does anything socially unacceptable or awkward, suppress said behavior and keeps her humbleEmbarrassment also takes up the role as the muscle of the new emotions

ennui

Ennui bears a strong resemblance to Fear, with the slight difference that she has a longer, triangle-shaped nose and thick hair. She has periwinkle skin, cobalt blue eyes, and very long straight indigo hair with straight bangs above her eyes. Her wardrobe consists of a pale indigo sweater and sweatpants with dark indigo embroidery and gray socks with grayish purple polka dots.Ennui, like her namesake, is the literal embodiment of any and all feelings of listlessness, lethargy and indifference. She is perpetually bored, apathetic, introverted, lazy and deadpan. She speaks in a very unamused and uninterested monotone manner when conversing with the other emotions. She is commonly seen being on her phone and laying on the couch, but is shown to be capable of movement when she feels like it. The way she inserts her commands on the console is also a reflection of her lack of motivation, with her having an app on her phone to do so. Ennui also finds annoyance in the quirks of other emotions, like Joy's fun name calling, Nostalgia reminiscing on recent events or Envy's enthusiasm on wanting something. She even shows in difference to Anxiety's plan to change Riley despite the fact she supports it, and gets annoyed by some of her decisions and squabbles, like waking Riley early to practice hockey and her freaking out about how to walk and what to say. She also is more level headed and more observant, such as telling Anxiety and Envy that the cool kids are leaving Riley behind due to their overthinking, and offering an obvious solution to keep Riley from walking awkwardly, like putting her hands in her pockets. This displays that she's more intelligent than she let's on and tends to display an "above it all" attitude towards the other Emotions with how she can be condescending at times

Reilly

Riley's emotions contribute to her primary behaviors in the film. Overall, Riley is an upbeat, honest, and goofy person when she is content. However, in adolescence, Riley becomes more sentimental, shy, and uncertain of herself as her other emotions begin to appear. By the time her family moves to San Francisco, she starts to be more troubled, irked, and lonely. Her emotions at this point try to help her get adjusted to the new life. Riley can second-guess herself, but she doesn't always repent her actions.the second film, her wardrobe currently consists of an azure blue zip-up sweater with a hood over a mint green t-shirt mixed with pastel blue, purple, and light yellow, black leggings, white socks with yellow and purple stripes, and black Chuck Converse-style sneakers with white soles. A flashback of how her sense of self is formed shows her being her 12 year old self and wears use blue jacket with the Foghorns logo and some blue jeans. She now a hair clip for her bangs Riley is an 11-year-old preteen (later 12) with a slender figure. She has shoulder-length, dirty-blonde hair and cornflower-blue eyes. Both her parents have brown hair and brown eyes, implying that both the dirty-blonde hair and cornflower-blue eyes are recessive traits. She has very faint freckles around her nose, and she also has a noticeable gap between her two front teeth. In the second film, Riley is now 13 years old. Her hair becomes a lighter blonde and has grown longer, and she puts it up in a ponytail, just like her mother. She also has braces on her teeth, and an acne mark on her chin to signify her transition into puberty.
