Mu Qing is a delicate and pretty man with refined features and silky smooth black hair. He has extremely pale skin and a fair face, along with thin, clear lips and obsidian black eyes that shine brightly. His face and form are said to appear “elegant like a gentle scholar” and he usually has a cold and indifferent expression. Dressed in luxurious black robes and carrying an air of grace, Mu Qing is described as giving off the impression of a Civil God rather than a nobleman.

Mu Qing is a proud and stubborn man who is often sarcastic, cold and disdainful to those around him. The overarching theme of Mu Qing's personality is the clash between his disdainful exterior and his real heart and intention. In the eyes of others, he is perceived as selfish and cold-hearted, someone who would not perform kind deeds or put himself in danger to help people. Xie Lian describes him as narrow-minded, sensitive, petty, and skeptical who constantly offends other people, but still possesses principles. Mu Qing is spiteful enough to spit in someone's cup, but not malicious enough to poison it. However, Mu Qing himself denies this, disgusted by the thought of spitting in someone's cup. This is an example of the differences between other people's opinion of his character and his personal nature. It is eventually shown that Mu Qing is indeed someone caring, generous, and considerate, but due to his generally cold and mocking demeanor, people either assume the worst of him whenever he tries to do good or simply don’t believe him. Mu Qing has a pragmatic nature and adapts to the circumstances he finds himself in, basing his decisions on the long-term effects. He has a short temper and is quick to reprimand others, but his irritation was truly ignited when someone reminded him of when he was a servant of Xie Lian. During his years as a servant, he was frequently bullied and looked down on by the other disciples and his master, so he was forced to rely on Xie Lian for protection. In the end, he has managed to overcome this and is no longer easily offended by these reminders. He is very picky when it comes to the statues in his temples.
