Nichols was born into a Jewish family in 1983 and grew up in New York City. From a young age, she lived apart from her mother, Markie Nichols, a wealthy but extremely selfish socialite who now lives in Brazil. Niki was mainly raised by her nanny, Paloma, whom Mark blames for her and Les Nichols' divorce, while she herself lived in a separate house with her boyfriend Paolo, who does not like the company of children. At her bat mitzvah, Niki expresses her disappointment at her parents' lack of love and support in front of the entire congregation ("I'm a talking ass"). Her speech leads to both parents arguing in front of her about who should take her home (neither parent wants to see her). Due to parental neglect, Nicky turned to heroin and became an addict. Her addiction has led to numerous near-death cases, including open-heart surgery due to bacterial endocarditis, which can be caused by using a dirty needle. Surgeons also found traces of cocaine in her blood.
