nightmare as a child was a guardian of negative side of the tree of feelings the other half was positive both had apples, yellow ones were positive and the black ones were negative. the villagers thought nightmare was evil so they bullied him harshly while his older brother (dream guardian of the positive side) tried protecting him from the villagers but one day dream was away making friends with the villagers while nightmare was getting beat and he thought he was going to die so he ate one of the negative apple turning him into a goopy skeleton and being consumed by hatred and negativity
