History

Ian Clayton Gallagher was born in 1996 in Illinois, and is the third eldest child of the Gallagher family. He is presumably the product of a PCP-fueled affair between his mother Monica Gallagher and Frank Gallagher's brother, Clayton Gallagher, in the summer of 1995. Ian has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder; he currently refuses to visit a doctor and does not believe he needs to take medication. For these reasons, his behavior has been erratic and out of control, worrying his family. He is a high school dropout, having left his education behind when he illegally enlisted in the military at the end of season 3. While in the military, Ian attempted to steal a helicopter, and was a wanted criminal on at least two charges: attempted theft of government property and impersonating his older brother, Phillip Gallagher. He has been in an on-again, off-again relationship with aggressive neighborhood bully Mickey Milkovich, and was best friends with Mickey's sister Mandy Milkovich; She has a complete hatred for Mandy's abusive boyfriend Kenyatta, with whom she moved to Indiana in Season 5. She helps out around the house and assists Mickey and Svetlana with the care of their son Yevgeny. After spiraling out of control, Ian becomes a religious fanatic in season 8 and is arrested. During season 9, Ian is sent to prison to serve a two-year sentence, where he is reunited with Mickey Milkovich and his character was temporarily written out of the series, making an appearance in the season finale before Fiona leaves. Ian returns in season 10 with Mickey and they are both eventually paroled. Ian struggles with life after prison, building a future with Mickey and his own insecurities, but eventually he and Mickey get engaged and married.

Personality

Ian is not as smart as Lip, but he is in better physical shape. Frank describes him as a person with an excellent work ethic in almost everything he does. He is often unsure of what he wants to do in his life, but once he sets a goal for himself, he goes after it one hundred percent. Ian is also self-conscious about his bipolar disorder, which he inherited from his mother, and often feels incompetent because it prevents him from doing certain things. He sometimes refuses to admit that he has a problem when his disorder causes him to stray from his usual path. Ian gets along with all of his siblings, who knew about his sexuality long before he revealed it and accepted it anyway. He is closest to Lip and Fiona, but gets along with his younger siblings and often helps protect them from Frank's influence. Ian was devastated by the betrayal of Samantha Slott, who told the army about his deserter decisions. However, he tried to steer Samantha's son Chuckie Slott away from his misguided views of reform school.

Personality

Like his brothers, Ian resents his father Frank for his neglect and treatment of him ever since his mother Monica abandoned them. For some time, Ian felt that his father despised him more than anyone else. However, he was greatly shocked to learn that Frank was not his biological father, but his uncle. After meeting his presumed father (Frank's brother), Ian decided not to broach the subject and accepted that Frank was his father, just like Lip and the others are his brothers. Interestingly, Frank also claims that Ian is still his son, though he does not despise his sexuality and accepts it no matter what. Despite claiming to hate him, Ian was concerned when Mickey plotted to kill Frank for finding out he was gay. Ian also warned Frank of the danger he was in, but listened to his father's words about his life. Ian was even present during Frank's time in the hospital when it looked like he was going to die of liver failure and even seemed sad. However, she returned to her usual reaction towards Frank after he received a new liver and survived.

Personality

After Frank ruined Fiona's wedding, Ian had a hand in throwing Frank off the bridge, was not surprised to see him alive when he returned, and did not try to help him in his time of grief. Ian also expressed pleasure at Frank's disowning him until Frank took revenge by taking Liam away and locking the family out of the house. This tension escalated to the point where he and Lip were tortured by Frank with a raccoon and Frank created a new family while sending him away. Ian's anger softened when he introduced Trevor to Frank and still called him his father. However, his displeasure remained when he tried to attack his father after he tried to return home, but soon relented and slowly forgave his father when he helped Liam and fixed up the house. Ian made peace with Frank after seeing his grief over Monica's death and hearing him express pride in them, despite their past. Over the next month, Ian was also shocked to see Frank make an effort to change and save him and the rest of the family from a gun-toting drug addict while realizing that Frank had been holding him back for years in his attacks on him.

Personality

Although he was not entirely convinced but grateful for the rescue, Ian seemed to encourage Frank's actions and was glad that he made an effort to bond with Liam. Regardless, Ian shows that he cares for Frank and was glad to see him happy when he converted his wedding with Mickey. When Ian found out that Frank was suffering from dementia, he seemed concerned and no longer became hostile towards Frank, showing deep down that he loves him. Ian is gay and has had several troubled relationships throughout the series. He had several affairs with older married men: Kash and Lloyd. However, the affairs end on bad terms due to the men's complicated lives. The first relationship was with neighborhood bully Mickey, who was the person he wanted to be with all the time, but was devastated. Mickey's pride and reaction to his bipolar disorder blocked him from doing so. His second relationship was with firefighter Caleb, who was different from all his peers in that they were doing normal things, as they dated and confided personal secrets to each other: Ian was bipolar and Caleb was HIV positive. Caleb was also more encouraging, as he pushed Ian to strive to be a paramedic, something he was successful at. Their relationship lasted for a month, when Ian discovers that Caleb was bisexual and cheating on him with women.

Personality

Ian's next partner was Trevor, who is transgender and showed a mutual attraction to him. Although Ian just broke up with Caleb, he felt differently about Trevor and after getting over their differences, they slowly built a relationship once they found common interests. Ian ruined his chances by cheating on Trevor when he slept with Mickey and almost ran away with him. However, Ian returned to Trevor and they began to reconcile until Ian became a religious fanatic and arsonist. In prison, Ian reunited with Mickey and they resumed their status. Ian and Mickey had reconciled in the six months that passed, but things became tumultuous due to the fact that they constantly fought over small things. Despite everything, they still cared for each other as Mickey stopped Ian from ruining his parole meeting and helped Ian get a phone for him to see his new nephew Freddie Gallagher. After they were both released from prison, they moved in together and things went smoother than they had in prison. However, Ian is hesitant about marrying Mickey, eventually revealing that much of it stems from insecurities about how Mickey could love Ian with all of his problems when Mickey could find someone better.

Personality

After hearing Byron speak ill of Mickey and his qualities, Ian is inspired to not only jump to Mickey's defense, but to propose to him himself. Despite the turbulence in his wedding plans and the reactions of Mickey's father, Ian was finally able to marry Mickey with the help of his family, friends, and even his old Gay Jesus followers. With Mickey as his new husband, Ian couldn't help but be happy to finally find the person he truly wanted. The only sadness Ian showed was that Monica couldn't be there to witness the wedding.
