At first glance, Kurapika has a somewhat androgynous appearance, and his physical build is quite small, so his features are rather subtle and boyish. He has blonde hair with brown eyes; blue in the 1999 series, and grey in the 2011 version. Personality

Kurapika is a level-headed and intelligent person, possessing extensive knowledge and being very judgmental. He initially keeps his distance from other people after being traumatized by the loss of everyone he loved at the age of twelve, remaining introverted in order to stay focused on achieving his goal. Although outwardly Kurapika claims that he wants to be a Blacklist Hunter and his ultimate goal is to capture the band of thieves who massacred his clan, the Phantom Troupe, deep down he is a fair and kind-hearted person. After becoming a professional hunter, Kurapika begins a self-destructive path. His anger leads him to commit evil acts. Additionally, Kurapika's reserved demeanor makes him very ruthless and irrational, but his friends are the only ones capable of making him think rationally in his moments of anger. Still, he considers his friendships as a weakness that makes it difficult for him to succeed in his goals. As a child, his personality was more similar to Gon's, he tended to seek adventures and had an impulsive nature. However, Kurapika was still protective of his friends, even going so far as to beat up a man for his derogatory remarks towards one of them.

Kurapika was a member of the defunct Kurta clan. In the Kurapika Tsuioku-Hen extra, he is shown to be a cheerful, friendly, protective, and adventurous child, which contradicts some parts of the current Kurapika's personality. Also, in said extra, Kurapika's relationship with his father, mother, and grandfather (leader of the Kurta) is revealed. As a child, Kurapika nearly fell off a cliff, but for the interference of his best friend, Pairo. While Kurapika was unharmed, Pairo had been severely injured, causing weak growths on both his legs and eyes, something that seemed to get worse by the day. Kurapika felt responsible for the incident, and felt that the only way to resolve it was to go to the "outside world" and bring his tribe the best doctor to heal him. However, their leader refused this option, considering that humans are beings who do not understand their race, and it could be dangerous. At some point they saved a strange woman named Shilah, and as a thank you she gave them a book about the outside world to read together and keep safe. Kurapika went to the old man to ask him about the book (knowing that he stole it). He had a new excuse to finally agree to take the exam. Studying hard and passing all the tests successfully, the old man imposed some conditions and tests on him, in which he had to go shopping with a partner, without revealing his eyes. Kurapika chose Pairo. Finally, after passing the final test, Kurapika declared that he would go to the outside world to find a doctor for Pairo, and so the two of them could go wander the world. Eventually, the clan is massacred by the Phantom Troupe for their scarlet eyes, which had great monetary value, leaving behind dozens of corpses with their eyes torn out in their wake. As the last survivor of his clan, Kurapika vows to recover all of his village's stolen eyes and arrest the dead.

Kurapika has all the benefits granted by his status as a Hunter. As a Zodiac, his authority in the Hunter Association is second only to that of the president himself. The chains are suitable for both offensive and defensive purposes (usually the Dowsing Chain), as well as immobilizing the opponent (Jail Chain).
