Appearance

Kanao is a young girl with large, soft, lilac-pink eyes framed by thick eyelashes. She has straight, thin black hair with straight bangs, which she keeps tied in a ponytail on the right side of her head and held in place by a pink and green butterfly-shaped hair clip that once belonged to her adoptive sister, Kanae.[4] Her Demon Slayer uniform is the most customized of all the main characters, whose fabric in the anime is lightly dyed purple, having a pleated skirt that reaches to the bottom of her knees instead of the traditional hakama pants that is held up by a white leather belt on which she keeps her Nichirin sword hooked, which in her case has the guard in the shape of a pink inner circle with the engraving of a lotus flower, with white edges, the guard of the same color combination with the pink cutting blade and instead of using traditional Japanese sandals, she uses a pair of white lace-up boots whose laces are dark yellow and its tip is beige and a white cape with a fuchsia ornament. During the events of the Entertainment District Arc, Kanao is seen wearing her traditional Demon Slayer uniform without the cape she originally wore. [5] During the fight against Doma, the Upper Moon Two, Kanao was blinded in her right eye by using the final stance of the Flower Breath. Since then, her right eye has a dull appearance with a defined pupil with a dark ring around it and being deprived of its gradient. From then on, Kanao slightly modifies her appearance by using the hair ornament that belonged to Shinobu Kochō since hers was destroyed in her fight against Douma. [4]

After the fight with Muzan, Kanao has been left almost blind as she used her Sixth Breathing Stance for the second time affecting her eyes in order to inject Tanjiro with the antidote to Muzan's transformation into a Demon as he tried to take possession of his body. As a result, she depends on Kaburamaru to carry out her activities or to know what is happening around her.

Personality

At the time of her introduction, Kanao is portrayed as an autistic and silent girl. Before meeting the Kocho sisters, Kanao suffered multiple abuses in her childhood from her parents, which caused her to begin suppressing her emotions as a form of defense mechanism. As a way to suppress this defect, Kanae gave her a coin which she uses to make decisions by flipping it in the air. [6] Over the years, after seeing everything the Demons did to Shinobu Kocho's relatives, Aoi Kanzaki and Kiyo Terauchi, Kanao began to develop a hatred towards the creatures of her own accord. Since Kanao does not know how to do housework or nursing duties, she ended up training to become a Hunter under Kanae Kocho's tutelage by learning the techniques of Flower Breathing. Despite her apparent lack of emotions or desire, Kanao made the decision to participate in the final selection on her own free will, without consulting her superiors for permission, implying that her will had been growing stronger the entire time. Initially, Shinobu instructed Kanao to simply cut off the demons' heads without thinking, as Kanao had no will of her own. However, Kanao eventually developed her own desire to fight as well.[7]

Some time after Kanae's death, Kanao began to revert to old remnants of her former personality, making decisions by flipping a coin before taking an action item, however, when Tanjiro says goodbye to her, she simply says goodbye, being unable to continue the conversation and showing a propensity for giving automatic responses to everything. [8] Through her interaction with Tanjiro, she is slowly able to come out of her emotional shell, being able to make her own decisions without relying on anyone and being able to speak complete sentences with less ambiguity. [9] Through her interactions with Tanjiro, Kanao is shown to be more open and communicative, being more emotional and expressive. This is shown when she expresses her relief at seeing Tanjiro awaken after being in a coma for two months following the battle against Daki and Gyutaro, the Demons who together were the sixth upper moon[10], she also shows happiness when she asks Shinobu to train her again and genuine concern for her teacher when she reveals the plan to defeat Doma. During the fight against Doma, she displays a sadistic attitude never seen before by pointing out his own lack of emotions. Driven by hatred and resentment towards the death of her sisters by his hand, she verbally attacks him to the point where he drops his normal carefree demeanor.

Powers and Abilities

Kanao is the Tsuguko of Kanae and Shinobu and has been personally trained by both of them in the art of combat. As such, Kanao possesses superhuman physical abilities, skills, and prowess that potentially mark her out as a future member of the Pillar group within the Demon Extermination Corps. Tanjiro, another promising candidate, even states that during their first meeting together, he could already sense that Kanao was the closest thing to a Pillar within the existing group of Pillars, just by smelling her scent and sensing her aura, further confirming her abilities. Natural Abilities: Enhanced Sight: Kanao's vision is special. Because her eyesight is so acute, Kanao is able to predict her opponent's next move by observing the slightest movement of their muscles, joints, and vision. This allows her to perform effective counterattacks, dodge attacks more easily, and stay ahead of her opponents. Upper Moon Two Doma comments that because of this quality, she may be stronger than Shinobu. The enhanced vision ability is potentially amplified with the final style of Flower's Breath. Full Focus Breathing: As evidenced by the residents of the Butterfly Mansion, Kanao has fully mastered the ability to remain fully focused on her breathing, even being able to remain with her breathing activated for 24 hours.

Swordsmanship Skills: "Flower Breathing" (花はなの呼こ吸きゅう, Hana no kokyū?) is a breathing style derived from Water Breathing which was passed down to her by Kanae, the former Flower Pillar of the Demon Slaying Corps. Her abilities as a swordsman were passed down to her by Shinobu, the former Insect Pillar. "Second Stance: Honorable Shadow of the Plum" (弐にノ型かた 御み影かげ梅うめ,, Ni no kata: Mikage Ume?)[1] - A defensive technique that uses rotating slashes. "Fourth Stance: Crimson Hanagoromo" (肆しノ型かた 紅べに花はな衣ごろも,, Shi no kata: Beni Hanagoromo?)[2] - A simple sword strike that curves and twists. "Fifth Stance: Peonies of Futility" (伍ごノ型かた 徒あだの芍しゃく薬やく,, Go no kata: Ada no Shakuyaku?)[3] - An elegant flurry of nine consecutive attacks that flow and intertwine. "Sixth Stance: Spinning Peach" (陸ろくノ型かた 渦うず桃もも,, Roku no kata: Uzumomo?)[4] A technique used after or during evasion, the user spins by moving with their body weight to launch an attack. "Final Stance: Equinoctial Vermilion Eye" (終ついノ型かた 彼ひ岸がん朱しゅ眼がん,, Tsui no kata: Higan Shugan?)[5] - A focusing technique that raises the users kinetic vision to the maximum, while using this technique the user perceives the world as if it were in slow motion. However, using the technique is very dangerous, as the tremendous strain caused to the eyes can rupture blood vessels and could cause partial or complete blindness.
