Benjen Stark

Biography

Benjen Stark is the youngest child and third son of Lord Rickard Stark, head of House Stark. Benjen is the younger brother of Brandon, Eddard, and Lyanna Stark. Together with his brothers, Benjen participated in the famous Harrenhal tournament. Rickard, Brandon, and Lianna died in the civil war known as Robert's Rebellion. Eddard inherited his father's titles and responsibilities. Benjen joined the Night Watch and after a while became the first scout. His nephew Jon Snow considers him a hero and a role model. Benjen leaves the Wall and travels south to attend a feast in honor of King Robert Baratheon, who has arrived at Winterfell. He reports disturbing news from behind the Wall. Benjen tells Eddard that he knew a young deserter from the Night Watch who was executed by Ned, and calls him a nice kid and a real scout who would not leave his post so easily. He approves of his nephew Jon Snow's intention to join the Night Watch, but warns that the service is quite difficult.John begins to realize that the Watch is not the noble order he imagined. Upon arrival at Castle Black, John begins his training. Benjen informs John that he is going to explore beyond the Wall. John wants to join his uncle, but Benjen says that he is not ready, and warns that a man gets only what he deserves on the Wall. Benjen says goodbye to his friend Yoren, the recruiter of the Watch. He also gets into an altercation with Tyrion, who is about to travel south with Yoren. Benjen believes that Tyrion considers the Watch to be an army of buffoons in black; Tyrion claims that he admires the Night's Watch and Benjen as the first scout, but does not believe in giants, ghouls and white walkers lurking behind the Wall. John, who was elected the 998th Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, loses the trust of many black brothers when he leads several thousand wildlings forced to leave their Harsh Home and provides them with safe passage through Castle Black.
