Among his closest friends aboard the Enterprise were Captain Kirk and, unfortunately, Spock. McCoy's friendship with Kirk began long before Kirk took command of the Enterprise, and he often served as a sounding board and voice of conscience for the young captain. His legendary feud with a half-Vulcan research assistant (sparked more by a dispute over the merits of emotion over logic prejudices) hid the genuine mutual respect and friendship that existed between them.
McCoy was not averse to having a good drink with the captain from time to time. McCoy had a fondness for spirits from his region, such as Kentucky bourbon and Tennessee whiskey, with the Mint Julep being his favorite drink. Over time, the three seemed to form almost a single personality: McCoy is always emotional and passionate, Spock is objective and logical, and Kirk is intuitive; focus, direction and driving force combine the best of the other two.
