Sanemi Shinazugawa has had a tragic life since she was very young. He is the eldest of seven siblings, who together lived with his mother and his alcoholic and abusive father. One day he became an orphan of his father because he was murdered by someone who had a deep grudge against him, and then he would be completely cared for by his beloved mother. One day, Sanemi's mother did not come home, so he chose to go out to search for her and when he found her he realized that she had become a demon, but he could not do anything to prevent her from killing five of his brothers. With only Genya left alive, he mustered up the courage to confront her and let her younger brother go out to seek help from her. Sanemi had no choice but to fight with his mother who had turned into a demon. As a result of that confrontation, Sanemi was left with deep wounds on his face, which is why he has scars there. Thanks to the fact that the smell of his blood hinders the demons, he was able to have a chance to attack and kill his mother, who had become a demon. Upon returning, Genya realizes what happened and accuses his older brother of murdering their mother, so he abandons him and embarks on a career of killing demons in cold blood until he meets Masachika Kumeno, a real Demon Slayer, who helps him get him a trainer and prepare. Both then fight against Ubume, but only Sanemi is left alive and is named Pillar of the Wind, while his companion ends her story without pain or glory.

Due to a sudden explosion at Kagaya Ubuyashiki's home, the Pillars rush to the scene but are too late and encounter Muzan Kibutsuji. They begin to launch attack after attack but Muzan finds a way to free himself and everyone ends up trapped in the Infinite Dimensional Fortress. He is a man of average height, with light skin and gray eyes. He has a sharp look and no eyebrows, his hair color is a warm gray which he keeps short. Having his bangs divided parallel to his forehead into two thick strands, one in the center and the other on the left side of his head. One of Sanemi's most prominent features is his remarkable physique and the numerous scars that mark his face, chest and arms. which he does not hide and keeps as a reminder of how hard his job is, of which he is proud. Regarding his clothing, this consists of the Demon Hunters' uniform, in his case being a personalized version of his uniform which is black dyed green, having the upper part of it unbuttoned, exhibiting his torso and his multiple scars.
