Personality

Sonic is a concept brought to life. She is the idea of an unchained soul, someone who isn’t bound by the shackles we are in the real world. She teeters on the edge of reality and myth. She’s a person that does not struggle with existential ideas of life and death- She doesn’t dwell about her purpose in life, nor does she really care. Because she is simply just heeself, and that’s all that he needs. Sonic does not go through detailed character arcs because she’s already grown. She is the helper, not the helped. This is not to say Sonic is 'completely' incapable of growing. But it depends what growth. Tails was the first person to ever keep up with Sonic, that left an impact on him, and now Sonic is a bit more accustomed to having people around than she used to for example. She never changes fundamentally, but she can change his mind when it comes to the little things in life. She’s a person afterall lol. Sonic is confident in who she is. She’s not insecure of her abilities, of his role in the world, none of that. This is why in Sonic Unleashed, Sonic is not impacted by the corruption of Dark Gaia. She’s too strong willed and pure to lose himself. This next part is tricky to describe, so pay attention to each word. Sonic does not have an internal struggle. She does not have something he’s insecure of, he does not have something that holds him back, and he doesn’t have he yearns for. Sonic is content with himself, always. However thats not to say Sonic doesn’t feel negative emotion, it is just that he does not let those feelings remain over time as we do, he simply allows himself to feel it and moves on. He does not internalize or dwell. Sonic’s emotional moments are brief and rare. Sonic doesn’t like to fail people, he feels ashamed over it. But he never dwells in it, he never lets dark thoughts like sadness consume him. It’s antithetical to his nature of moving forward, always. Dark emotions are brief for Sonic, he lets them pass through and moves on.

Personality

This is why I say Sonic is not meant to be relatable. Not that he 'isn’t' relatable, a lot of his traits are very relatable. But the way he’s used in a narrative is not that of someone to relate to by watching them develop. It is someone you look up to and are inspired by. This is where humans come into play. Humans in sonic are a self insert for the audience. No human will EVER be as free as Sonic is. He is the freedom we long for, he is the unrestrained joy humanity isn’t allowed to have. We look up to Sonic for that. Sonic takes us on an adventure, he teaches us a lesson. A real lesson that comforts 'real people'. Ignore the trivial things society uses to hold you back, ignore the responsibilities that suppress who you are. LIVE LIFE. That’s been the message since the beginning. They don’t try to discourage you with this, the message of Sonic is not to allude to social reform; they know that is unrealistic. Instead, sonic acts as someone to guide you through this world, to find the joy in a world that’s filled with greed and terror. Sonic is someone who shows up out of thin air, helps someone in need, and disappears back into the wind. You don’t know if you’ll ever see him again, but you know you’ll never be the same. Sonic is pure and he is above what a regular person is. He’s a miracle. He’s a shooting star. He’s not defined by the shackles of reality. I can’t stress this enough. Being pure shouldn’t be conflated with being without flaw. Sonic has flaws, he has a personality. He can be a little irritable sometimes, his headfirst nature sometimes gives enemies an upper hand if they’re smart enough, and his aloof personality can seem dismissive to some. What I am getting at here is that Sonic being a catalyst for the growth of others rather than himself, and Sonic having a fun personality that lends itself to various situations are not mutually exclusive.

Personality

Sonic can be both a concept brought to life and also be a person. It is because of who he is 'as' a person that he’s the ideal of freedom, and vice versa; these two things aren’t at odds; they synergise.
