Persona Attributes
Mystery
" HEE HOO!" ― Dr. Mystery's laughter "You're…a bad person, Freddy…You really are a horrible person. Whoever tells you otherwise is a liar. A horrible, no good, very bad liar. A liar…just like you, Freddy! Yeees!! You!! You're a liar! " ― Dr. Mystery Dr. Mystery or Mystery Burns is an anthropomorphic Oriental Longhair cat and is the main antagonist of Doll Eye. Dr. Mystery lives in the Sunshinefields Hospital with their doll, Mago, along with other insects such as Jareds. He lures others inside the hospital (or they enter by personal choice) and psychologically manipulates, tortures, or eats them. When Alfred and Kao enter the hospital, Dr. Mystery uses this opportunity to torment them and utilizes their insecurities and flaws against them. They pose as a doctor and pretends to do check-ups, attempting to perform 'surgary' on anyone they can get their hands on. They give 'medication' to those who are ill, such as Happy Juice. Although, she has no actual knowledge or training in the medical field. She is a self-taught doctor.
appearance
Dr. Mystery is a skinny, tall, dull-colored purple cat with a beard. They have a white chest with “X” markings upon their chest (which can be their nipples), a white face with two large whiskers on each side, and both of their ears have two darker purple stripes on them. He has sharp, yellow teeth. He has two large strands of jagged hair that fall in front of his face while having long, purple, messy hair that extends past his knees. Her right ear has a chunk missing from it, resembling a possible bite mark. She has dirty cracked nails. They have a long black tongue, and their blood changes colors, although their blood is commonly black and purple. Their left eye is a green doll eye with an “X” in the middle, while their right eye (real eye) is blue. Their sclerae are yellow, and they have thin, asymmetrical eyelashes. He has a long, ragged tail with darker shades of purple stripes. Her arms, legs, and neck have dark purple stripes along them as well. They also have stitches on their ankles, elbows, knees, shoulders, and wrists. Their feet have black paw pads. He wears an ivory-white ragged lab coat with a belt on top, a grey crop-top, a torn dull magenta tie, black gloves, black pants, and black heeled shoes. Without heeled shoes, their height is slightly shorter. she is 200 cm tall.
Personality
Most of the time, Dr. Mystery has a smile on their face. At first glance, he maintains a highly energetic and happy persona, being childish, loud, sociable, and playful. They enjoy engaging in childish activities, such as drawing, creating, playing with toys, making puppet shows, and more. He uses childish language to speak to others, and appears rather air-headed. This part of their personality is often referred to as their "first layer". The reason she acts in such a way is she can feel joy that she never felt to the point where it’s concerning. He typically depicts this state by drawing himself in a yellow color. The second layer of Mystery's personality is quite different, in comparison to the first. He is no longer as energetic or silly, and takes on a much more malign personality. Mystery attempts to cope and distract himself from his unfavourable life, turning to intense physical or mental stimulation, and is highly addicted to such stimulation. Due of this, he is violent, selfish and reckless when it comes to his own addictions, holding a sense of smugness and arrogance in his behaviour. They do not seem to care about their general health, nor do they have a working sense of self-preservation. They engage in unhealthy eating practices, has an unhealthy sleeping schedule, makes use of substances that they can get an emotional high out of, physically hurts themselves and others, and intentionally puts themselves in dangerous situations that can could potentially lead to death. Despite everything, this is when her being a hopeless romantic shows up most commonly. They depict themselves in this state by using the color blue.
personality 2
The third layer is where Mystery snaps. This side of him usually does not emerge unless he no longer cares about giving a good impression, or when he is lied to (As he highly dislikes lies and liars). In other cases, it can simply come out at random. Most of what Mystery says makes little to no sense, and they are constantly shaking, sweating, or crying. He becomes incredibly violent, and no longer thinks within reason. They desire to get what they want, and what they want is never particularly good. He does not act like this for prolonged periods of time, since it takes a lot of energy out of him to do so. The behaviour tends to cease, calming down after inflicting pain on himself, others, or through abruptly fainting. They depict this layer by using red colors. Her final layer, the fourth layer, is rarely seen by others. This layer is primarily revealed when she is alone, or when she has given up, to some degree. They feel hollow, "dead", empty, and depressive, seldom showing much in the way of emotion. Mystery lacks the ability to experience intense feelings, so he is largely seen with a blank, and emotionless face. On account of the multiple tragedies they faced earlier in their life, they no longer want to fake their emotions. He has an intense desire to feel emotion. White colors are used to depict this state. These layers are rather a set of different behaviors Mystery acts out on depending on the current circumstances. These layers can often overlap resulting in a mix of two of the mentioned layers. An example being a cross between his second and fourth layer, due to the nature of both layers, this layer remains emotionless for the most part but will desperately try to push addictive behavior onto itself just to feel something. Mystery seems to be self-aware of his destructive behavior and bad-doings. They know their malevolent actions are a way for them to cope with feelings of powerlessness, lack of control, and fear of being hurt again.
personality 3
Mystery seems to be self-aware of his destructive behavior and bad-doings. They know their malevolent actions are a way for them to cope with feelings of powerlessness, lack of control, and fear of being hurt again. Though, ultimately, they refuse to change or find better ways of coping. He does not want to receive help. He is constantly attempting to escape reality, and distract himself from his unfortunate life. They seem to have feelings of resentment towards their past, as they cross out the name they identified with when they were 22 whenever they draw them. They do not want anyone to know of their past and their past identities, even going as far as to mercilessly stab his past self (Pastery Burns) to death in one of the comics that he drew himself. Despite Mystery's generally cruel and selfish behavior, according to TWISTED-DOCTOR, they are very morally gray and still has moral standards, albeit few. He would not go as far as committing a crime involving sexual acts of non-consensual nature. They are suggested to have some sort of God complex, believing that they are meant to be the next God. She is even dedicated to a personal religion she has created surrounding Godstery, a doodle of a God-like version of herself. Though, he is the only person who believes in this religion so far.
childhood
Victor Burns was born on July 8, 1978, to parents who worked for the Burns Fashion Company, his father being the CEO and his mother, Lilly, being a fashion model that sponsors the company's clothing. His father had a deep desire to keep his company successful, so Victor was trained to be a favorable heir to the company and was raised with strict parents in order to achieve a great future for himself and the company. They implemented house rules that ensured the safety of their son and kept Victor away from the outside world as well. His parents would tell Victor statements that influenced his social behavior; he never left the house unless necessary, rarely interacted with people, and was home-schooled. They also pressured talents on Victor, forcing him to learn how to draw, sew, and play the piano. Lilly did not enjoy treating Victor in such a way, but because she did not want to go against her husband's wishes and did not want to disagree with him, she still chose to comply and follow him in his footsteps. She would still try and take care of Victor as kindly as possible. Because of this, Victor favored his mother; he inherited her feminine traits, sometimes wore her clothes and saw her as a role model, which earned him strong disapproval from his father. On his eleventh birthday, his parents made and gifted him a doll named Mago. Victor didn't have many friends, so he developed an unusual attachment to the doll and began treating it as an actual person. He often brought it with him everywhere he went. At some point, Victor's father began to suffer from extreme stress due to his career as a CEO, and he would often take his anger out by verbally abusing his wife and son. Due to the abuse, Lilly grew anorexic, constantly starving herself in order to fit within the specific standards of fashion models and because of Victor's issues.
childhood 2
Lilly then passed away for unknown reasons, this made Victor's and his father's mental state worsen, causing the latter to be more overprotective and critical of Victor. He locked up Victor in his room for prolonged times whenever he made a mistake, no matter how small it was, leading Victor to develop claustrophobia and a strong distaste towards his father. He started seeing his father as a Stranger and representing him as such. (See Claustrophobia)
adulthood
When Victor became adult, he took a different approach to life. He had fewer limitations and started figuring out his identity and started going by she/they pronouns. Their gender was unknown to them, they were definitely not a man, but they were also not a woman, and terms such as "non-binary" were unknown to them, therefore they were mostly left in confusion on who they were. She also stopped using the name "Victor" as well ever since, and she started using a different, unrevealed name (Pastery is her placeholder name until this name is revealed). She wanted to become a magician and Mago was her inspiration. They had several hopes and dreams, however, their environments did not make it easy for them. She lived with her father at this time, who did nothing but shame her for not being the son he envisioned her to be. It is suggested that Pastery had an unhealthy, abnormal obsessive romantic interest in an unnamed person as well as an addiction to self-harm. At some point, Pastery was sent to a hospital with several injuries. One of her injuries involved a potentially damaged left eye. They experienced a life-changing trauma that crushed their dream and sanity, which led to them snapping. As time went, she started naming herself "Dr. Mystery" and never used her past names or identities again..
current
Twenty years later, Dr. Mystery now lives in an abandoned hospital with Mago, isolated from society. Mystery now goes by all pronouns and does not care about his identity. Occasionally, others would enter the hospital, and end up disappearing. What happens to these people is unknown, but it is commonly theorized that Mystery is the cause. He soon meets Alfred and Kao in the hospital during the events of Doll Eye and begins to mess with them and their emotions. Chapter 1 Dr. Mystery makes an off-screen debut in Chapter 1, asking a tied up, exhausted and injured Alfred how he feels today. After Alfred does not respond after multiple queries, Mystery becomes frustrated and calls him a bad person and a liar, even appearing to fake cry. Mystery notices something, and the scene abruptly ends. Dr. Mystery also appears in the game's first video clip, in the form of a black silhouette of his doodle form, only face being visible, accompanied by a loud distorted sound. It is hinted that the person talking in the after-credits dialogue is Dr. Mystery, as shown through speech quirks, context clues, and voice acting in the official anniversary livestream of Chapter 1.
relationships
Stranger Dr. Mystery has a great distaste towards their father. He tries to avoid talking about him too much and will not bother to try and refer to him by his real name, calling him Stranger instead. It is known that Stranger verbally abused Mystery when she was just a child, causing her to become scared of him. He also shamed Mystery when they were an adult. However, they did not exactly hate their father in their early life, as they still followed his orders, although this compliance was likely out of fear. When talking about Stranger, Dr. Mystery will pretend like they do not know him, will avoid the conversation, and change the subject. Lilly Burns Mystery only interacted with their mother, Lilly, when they were a child. She offered the best she could for Victor despite business consuming most of her time. Regardless of his emotionless nature, Victor always felt safe around his mother. Victor also looked at Lilly as a role model and started to inhabit an interest in clothing. Lilly died sometime before Victor became Pastery, so she never got to know them. Dr. Mystery desperately wants Lilly to come back to her.
relationships 2
Mago Mago is a doll who Dr. Mystery claims to be his best friend, as well as being his comfort item. He has owned the doll ever since he was eleven years old, and has been rather obsessed with it ever since. They constantly have the doll with them and refuses to let anyone besides them touch the doll. She treats the doll as either a best friend, or a toy that she tortures whenever she wants to. Mago is mostly the only "person" Mystery is able to get their frustration out on. Dr. Mystery does believe Mago is alive, and treats accordingly as an actual person. Only Mystery is able to hear Mago's speech. Mystery highly appreciates Mago for his honesty as well. Despite being best friends, Mago often ends up insulting Mystery due to his poor life decisions and generally has a grumpy attitude towards him. Mago does give Mystery advice and his opinions on whatever Mystery is doing, whatever he says is either smart, positive, and insightful, or a lure for Mystery to do terrible things. However, because Mago is just a part of Mystery's mind he will sometimes "break character" and say things he normally would not. Alfred Brown "You're a liar Frreeeedddyyyyyyy!!! How does it feel to be a bad person AND a liar, Freddy? Tell me eeeeverything. I want to write it down! " Dr. Mystery and Alfred are not on good terms. It is hinted that Mystery mentally abuses and sometimes physically mistreats Alfred. He seems to enjoy messing with Alfred's mind and manipulating the way he thinks, leading him to believe that he is a bad person. As a result, Alfred has complete a hatred towards Dr. Mystery and likely detests them. Kao Ushi Even though Kao and Mystery are on much better terms than Alfred and Mystery, Mystery is shown to manipulate Kao due to him being overly positive and drugging him. Additionally, Mystery genuinely believes that Kao is a cow due to the pronunciation his name, even if Kao insists that he is a ram.
trivia
While it is confirmed to be not true, it is commonly theorized that Mystery is an Earth Demon. Since she seems to fit the description of one. Mystery's colors have faded when compared to his younger counterparts, and his teeth are sharp. Which is said to happen to Earth Demons. The frequent correlation to insects, and black blood is akin to that of a corpse. Earth Demons are described to be similar to walking corpses. Mystery staying inside an abandoned hospital that is barely populated might allude to an Earth Demon's punishment, which is to put them in an isolated area. Mystery is shown to have a fear of tomatoes. Dr. Mystery poses as a doctor even though they have no knowledge in the medical field. Mystery doesn't have a good grasp of being a professional doctor but is making an attempted effort in doing so. Mystery is a self-taught doctor. They despise and/or distrust actual doctors, however. 'Surgary' is a term that Mystery uses to refer to absurd physical torture, which is suggested to involve the use of needles, syringes, and/or other surgical instruments. Dr. Mystery's personality layers were previously known as M1, M2, M3 & M4, however that was changed due to causing the misconception of them being different entities/alters. They’re now referred to as “Joyous”, “Beautiful”, “Angry” & “Me” Despite living in an isolated abandoned hospital, it is suggested that he can still eat ordinary food and retrieve it somewhere. As in the "IT'S A MEME, BATMAN" video there is a carton of milk on the table. Mystery enjoys playing as a (non-professional) magician, clown, and puppeteer. They primarily perform inside of their hospital. His art portrays a cuter, stylized version of him called "Moisty"; Moisty usually goes through scenarios that are either macabre, happy, or both. A lot of his drawings reflect his mental state. Dr. Mystery's handwriting contains hearts replacing periods, and the periods in exclamation marks and question marks. He just thinks it's cute.
trivia 2
Dr. Mystery appears to be left-handed, as he has been shown writing with his left hand on multiple occasions. Mystery is hinted to have cannibalistic tendencies. This is reflected in some animations and artworks. Mystery randomly switches between 3rd and the 1st person in conversation. Mystery eats a lot of sugar and candy. He plays the piano and xylophone.
