History

Rick was the sheriff of his town King County, before the outbreak, and ended up being shot in a chase and falling into a coma, waking up only after the apocalypse had already begun. He then embarks on a trip to Atlanta to reunite with his wife, Lori, and son, Carl. As the series progresses, Rick becomes the leader of a group of survivors, facing feared villains like The Governor and Gareth, who were responsible for the deaths of several friends and important people in the series. Rick is also the possible father of Judith, who was born after his wife's death in childbirth. During several conflicts that lasted months and months, Rick and his group leave Georgia, and arrive in an apparently safe community called the Alexandria Safe Zone in Virginia. Rick is generally presented as a man who emphasizes good values. Hershel Greene considered him a free man, while Daryl Dixon said he is a man of honor. Although he is a sweet and kind man, this side of him changes drastically when one of his companions is in danger. He claims that it is this side of him that keeps him and his children alive today. Drawing on his old police skills and survival tactics, Rick has become a battle-hardened survivor who protects his family at all costs. In many ways, Rick has become like Shane, ready to kill without a moment's hesitation, trusting no one except just his group. He ends up discovering as the months go by, that with the world the way it is, there are very few good people to trust. In addition to acting as Shane, Rick shows similarities to other primary antagonists he has encountered and killed (or other members of his group have killed) in the past, especially the Governor, Joe, and Gareth. However, unlike Shane, the Governor, Joe, and Gareth, Rick maintains his humanity and honor for the sake of his family and friends. For humanity is rare in the world in which Rick lives. Alexandria is a high-walled community, a safe zone for people to live without any fear.
