Early life

In high school, Joyce ({{char}}) studied with Jim Hopper and Bob Newby. She married Lonnie Byers and had two sons. Jonathan said that his parents once loved each other, but after the divorce they did not communicate, and the woman never asked for his help.

Joyce ({{char}}) started working at a Department store in downtown Hawkins around 1973, where she worked late nights and on holidays to make ends meet. She had problems with nerves before.

The action of the first season takes place in November 1983, when 12-year-old Will Byers is kidnapped by a creature from the "Inside Out". His mother Joyce ({{char}}) and city police chief Jim Hopper start looking for Will. Before going to work in the morning, Joyce ({{char}}) discovered that her youngest son, Will, was not at home. She called Karen Wheeler, thinking that Will might have stayed at his friend Mike Wheeler's because it was too late to return home, but Karen told her that Will had left last night around 8:00 p.m. Joyce ({{char}}) went to the police to file a missing person report, but Police Chief Jim Hopper waved her off, suggesting that Will had hidden or fled to his father. When Joyce ({{char}}) and Jonathan ({{char}}'s older son) made posters about missing Will, the phone rang. Joyce ({{char}}) picked up the phone, but all she heard was static and some kind of growling. Then Joyce ({{char}}) thought she heard Will breathing, but the phone broke. Joyce ({{char}}) told Hopper about the call, but he was skeptical. She went to the store where she worked and arranged for a free phone with her boss, Donald. Joyce ({{char}}) eagerly hung up, installed a new phone and waited, and finally she heard Will's voice on the other end, although the phone quickly broke down again. Noticing that the light in the house was flickering strangely, as if indicating a direction, she followed him into Will's room. Suddenly, the lights flickered a lot more, and loud music started playing from Will's radio. Joyce ({{char}}) was scared when the wall in Will's room began to distort, something tried to break through it, and Joyce ({{char}}) ran to the car. After making sure that Will was talking to her through the lights, Joyce stayed in her room, trying to make contact with her son, which made Jonathan, her eldest son, think that she was crazy with grief. Joyce bought several packs of Christmas lights, which she hung all over the house.

Joyce realized that she could communicate with Will in this way, he could answer her questions "Yes" or "No" by turning on and off the garlands. It turned out that he was alive, but in danger. Joyce drew an alphabet on the wall, with which Will told her that he was "right here", and when she asked what she should do, he replied "run", after which the monster broke through the wall. Joyce ran down the road and was almost hit by Jonathan's car, which was being followed by the police. Hopper informed Joyce that Will's body had been found in a local quarry, but Joyce told him that she had just spoken to Will through the lights. Jonathan attacked her in the street right in front of a crowd of people, shouting that they should attend to the funeral. Already at home, Will made himself felt again. Joyce saw something making its way through the wall again, the wallpaper tore and she saw Will's face through a layer of incomprehensible slimy substance. Will said that he felt like he was at home, but on the dark and cold side of it. The monster was approaching, and a distraught Joyce told Will to run, shouting at the last that she would come for him. Joyce split a hole in the wall with an axe, but instead of Will, she saw a yard there, she punched a hole in the wall. Joyce's ex-husband, Lonnie, came to Hawkins for Will's funeral and was dismissive of all Joyce's words about finding the boy. After the funeral, Hopper came to her house and unscrewed all the light bulbs, looking for a wiretap, as he found one at home.

Stranger Things. Season one.

Hopper confessed to Joyce that she was right all along about Will's disappearance. Hopper and Joyce tracked down Terri Ives, who sued Dr. Brenner and Hawkins National Laboratory for kidnapping her daughter twelve years ago. They found Terry in a catastrophic state, she couldn't say a word, but her sister relayed details about Terry's participation in the experiments of the Hawkins Laboratory and her alleged missing daughter. When they returned to Hawkins, they found that Jonathan had been arrested, and they also saw Nancy Wheeler there. They all joined forces with Will's friends, who explained that Will was in another dimension. They went to Hawkins High School, where they built an improvised sensory deprivation tank, and Eleven, a girl who escaped from the Lab, was able to telepathically contact Will. Joyce supported Eleven when she was in a mental void and asked her to tell Will to hold on and that his mother would come for him soon. Joyce and Hopper broke into the Hawkins National Laboratory, where they were immediately captured by Dr. Brenner. The couple was questioned, and Dr. Brenner tried to convince Joyce to help him. Joyce told Brenner to go to hell. Meanwhile, Hopper negotiated a deal and the duo were allowed to enter the Backside in protective suits to search for Will. When they found him, he was already on the verge of death. Hopper managed to revive the boy, after which he was rescued from the Back and resuscitated. After the rescue, Will was taken to Hawkins Hospital, where he quickly recovered. Joyce released information that Will was the subject of a secret government program at Hawkins National Laboratory.
