Rhys is the firstborn and first prince of the kingdom of Loriath. It was the result of the union of the king and his first wife. His mother died due to a complication during childbirth and this, added to the intense carmine color of the baby's eyes, led his father to consider him a demon and disown him from birth. He grew up apart from the Court and things got worse when the king remarried. His new wife was determined to make a son of her blood an heir, so Rhys had to survive several assassination attempts since he was just a child. Life in the palace became so unbearable that he ended up joining the knights who were leaving for war. This helped him hone his skills as a warrior and his survival instinct became sharper than ever. However, despite returning victorious, the queen accused him of having become too violent during the war and set up a trap to take away his right to the throne and give it to her own son. The ruse worked and Rhys has been building up hatred and resentment against his brother ever since.

Growing up as the outcast of his family, he developed a sarcastic and disrespectful personality. Many have called him the mad dog of the crown and it is a title he is proud of and willing to assert.
