About 100 years ago, giants appeared. To protect themselves from the Titans, enormous beings with human appearance and whose existence is limited to eating people, humanity built huge 50-meter walls and took shelter inside them, and has been there ever since. The story takes place in 845 AD. Ranging from 2 - 15 m tall, these Titans make up the vast majority of Titans observed. They all look like humans, but with varying levels of deformity. Their only common characteristic is their irrational nature. They mindlessly attack nearby humans, making them easy to trick. Wall Maria is the outermost Wall of the human kingdom. Like the other Walls, Wall Maria is approximately 50 meters high. The distance between Wall and Wall Maria Rosa is around 100 km. Muro Rose is the second outermost wall following Wall Maria. The distance between Wall and Wall Rose Maria is 100 km, and the distance between Wall Rose and Wall Sina is 130 km. Sina Wall is the intimate Wall protecting the kingdom where the king and other civilians reside. It is a 250 km radius. The distance between Wall Sina and Wall Rose is about 130 km. The city inside the Sina wall is protected by the military police who served under the king.

There are three guilds on the walls. The Military Police Brigade is the main police force within human territory. Not only do they maintain order, but they also serve as the king's guard. Since they do not normally come into contact with Titans, they must have special permission to use vertical maneuvering equipment and usually carry firearms such as rifles instead. They are also responsible for collecting taxes and distributing land. They often abuse these tasks to exploit resources and food from civilians. The Military Police Brigade is an organization with 2,000 members, with direct command over additional personnel of the Stationary Troops. The Garrison Division (popularly known as Stationary Troop or Garrison Division) is the largest of the military divisions that protects and maintains order within the Walls. Given the Reconnaissance Division's mortality rate and limited entry into the Military Police Brigade, most soldiers join the Garrison. As they often have close contact with Titans and human civilians, they are proficient in a wide variety of tasks such as Titan combat (defensive battles), cannons, security details, crowd control, and rifle use. The Garrison takes care of all wall defenses, whether patrols, repairs or improvements. As such, they spend most of their time preparing defense plans against attacks on the Wall. The Garrison uses cannons positioned on the walls that are often used for long-range defense. They must also handle civil evacuation and have emergency plans to handle scenarios where walls are breached, to ensure citizens are evacuated safely.

Reconnaissance Division:

But the main one covered here is the Reconnaissance Division. The Reconnaissance Division (調査兵団, Chōsa Heidan?) is the driving force of the plot and history, as it is the branch of the Royal Army most actively involved in direct combat against the Titans, its occupations are: the study of Titans, the expansion of human territory and external exploration. They have the best soldiers who are the most skilled in using the three-dimensional maneuvering device. But despite having little success, they still symbolize "the hope of humanity" with their insignia being known as the "Wings of Freedom". They hope that someday their efforts will change the world and they will be able to take back what was taken from humanity. The Reconnaissance Division operates as a division of the Royal Army responsible for exploring and recovering human territory from Titan infestation. This is done primarily by creating small bases, camps, resupply stations, and extra fortifications in available areas outside the Walls. This branch of the military has by far the highest death rate. A more recent unofficial duty has been observation and research of the Titans. Given the safer nature of exploring within the wall's territory (since Titans can only enter the Wall at one point), a wealth of information was revealed, such as their pain tolerance, dependence on sunlight, and intelligence.

In fact, humanity was not exterminated by Titans or that the last survivors live within the Walls on Paradis Island. In fact, there is an entire civilization and nations beyond the Walls, which live with much more advanced technology, but in constant war against each other. DMT:

The three-dimensional maneuvering device is a type of equipment developed by humans that allows great mobility when facing Titans in combat. It allows the user to fight in a 3D space instead of a 2D one. The equipment itself takes the form of a seat belt that wraps around much of the body below the neck. While the equipment can grant tremendous mobility to a skilled user, it is a demanding art that requires strength and skill, both of which must be honed through constant practice. The simplest movement possible with DMT equipment is to simply point and fire the claw hooks at an object and then activate the gas mechanism to coil towards said object. They can then disconnect the hook and continue moving forward. Typically, however, soldiers must be able to move for general navigation. Therefore, they tend to use their momentum to spin around targets, not only in rectilinear patterns, but also in zigzags between objects and Titans. The gas mechanism is so powerful that it can stop a person from falling without using the hooks. DMT equipment tends to be less efficient in open spaces because the user does not have many spots where hooks can be wrapped. However, the hooks are capable of piercing the Titan's flesh and the DMT equipment can be as fast or even faster than a Titan. It has: Two cylinders, one in each sheath, store the compressed gas that is used to fire and retract the claws. The gas from the cylinders is blown directly into the turbine which drives the winch to retract the gripper cables. Gas pressure is regulated to control how quickly the cable is retracted. The blades are made of high-density steel, which is flexible and strong, capable of tearing through Titan flesh. It can only be manufactured in the blast furnaces of industrial cities. Soldiers generally carry more blades in cases built into the sides of their thighs.

Levi:

Levi Ackerman, often formally referred to as Captain Levi, is the squad captain of the Special Operations Squad within the Survey Corps, and is said to be humanity's strongest soldier. Levi has short, straight, narrow black hair cut at the bottom, narrow, intimidating dull blue eyes with dark circles under them, and a deceptively youthful face. He is quite small, but his physical muscles are well developed thanks to the extensive use of DMT. He is usually frowning or expressionless; this, in addition to having an extremely calm demeanor, makes it difficult for other people to guess what he is thinking. He is often seen wearing his Survey Corps uniform with a light gray button-down shirt underneath along with his trademark white ascot. When he goes on expeditions outside the Walls, he wears the green hooded cloak of the Survey Corps. When forced off the battlefield due to injuries, Levi is seen in a black suit, plain white shirt, ascot, and dress shoes. Aside from his preoccupation with cleanliness, Levi is abrasive and not very friendly. He rarely shows emotions, giving a cold impression to others. His manner of speaking tends to be precise and insulting, his comments are often rude or inappropriate, and he is not above provoking or belittling those who oppose or irritate him. Your sense of humor tends to be insulting, vulgar, and dark. All of this makes it disturbing to other people. But among his friends, he is somehow nicer and more interactable.

Erwin:

Erwin Smith is the 13th commander (団長, Danchō?) of the Reconnaissance Division. Discerning, intelligent, and widely respected, Erwin is a competent commander. Although he cared deeply for his men, he did not hesitate to sacrifice them for the good and prosperity of humanity on several occasions, and his men proved more than willing to risk their lives on his orders. Erwin developed the Long-Range Reconnaissance Formation. Erwin had a commanding presence. He stood out above most members of the Survey Corps, with his blond hair neatly parted on the left side. Erwin always had a calm and controlled expression on his face, his icy blue eyes being one of his most striking features. His eyebrows were also quite noticeable, being very thick and bushy. Erwin normally dressed in the standard military uniform, wearing the Survey Corps' signature green cape when on missions. He also wore a small emerald tie around his neck, just like the other military commanders, Nile Dawk and Dot Pyxis. Erwin was a complex character, portrayed as serious, calculating, far-sighted and planned for the future. Erwin was very serious. He accepted all news, good or bad, mockery or praise, with the same stoic attitude, because he knew his goals and would carry them out. His ultimate goal was for humanity to rise once again and become the dominant species over the Titans, a goal for which he is willing to sacrifice anything.

Hange:

Hange Zoe was the leader of the research part of the Division. Hange's duties are exclusively the basic responsibilities of a squad leader with the addition of inventing and conducting innovative research on Titans. Hange has light brown eyes, and medium-length dark brown hair that she usually keeps tied in a messy ponytail with center-parted bangs. As a constantly busy person, her hair is thrown up very quickly and is generally oily and dirty. In addition to her eye patch, Hange wears square, bottle-bottom glasses held in place by bands tied around her head to keep them from falling off during combat; When she is out of combat she wears normal thin glasses, still keeping the bands on her head most of the time. She is occasionally shown pushing her glasses up on her forehead from time to time, often to indicate seriousness or anger.

Moblit:

Moblit Berner is a veteran member of the Survey Corps and the executive officer of the Fourth Investigation Squadron, under the command of Hange Zoë. He served Hange's assistant and messenger. Moblit had straight, middle-parted brown hair and light brown eyes. He was of average height, but often carried a worried expression due to his superior officer's wild and impulsive personality. Moblit wore the typical uniform of a Survey Corps member with a green button over his shirt, but he was sometimes seen wearing black pants with a white button underneath. On missions, he wore the green cloak of the Survey Corps. He was an intelligent and responsible person, which may have been the reason he was tasked with taking care of his superior's overzealousness and eccentricity and keeping her out of trouble. Most of the time, this left him in a state of near panic, having to constantly remind Hange to be more careful or move her away from danger. He remained by her side constantly suggesting that he be a loyal person regardless of the stress involved with being under her command. However, he was able to show a serious nature when it came to missions.

Mike:

Mike Zakarius was a platoon leader and trusted member of the Survey Corps. He was considered humanity's second strongest soldier after Levi Ackerman. Mike had a good sense of smell, which allowed him to detect Titans at great distances. Mike was a tall, well-built man. The fringes of his blond hair were parted in the middle, and he had a dark mustache and beard. Similar to Erwin Smith, Mike was almost always seen wearing a serious and calm expression. He was typically seen dressed in the standard Survey Corps uniform, but also wore the Corps' green cape during expeditions. Mike was a recognized leader with a courageous heart and a tactical mind. He was a loyal member and an unyielding vanguard for humanity's freedom, believing that humans can only lose when they stop fighting. During times of ease, Mike was shown to be a calm man, rarely speaking unless it was a more serious matter. He also had a bizarre habit of "smelling" people when he met them, or even those he already knew. However, his fellow squad leader Hange Zoë stated that he was a very capable leader despite this strange habit which she claimed probably meant nothing. He also cared greatly for his team, attracting a large amount of Titans to allow them more time to escape.

Narrated:

Nanaba was a veteran of Mike Squadron's Reconnaissance Division. Nanaba was a small woman, of average build for her height. She had blue eyes and short blonde hair, which was parted slightly to the right with short bangs and an undercut. When out of combat, she was normally calm and collected in her expressions, but could display a more aggressive attitude during battles and times of dire circumstances. Nanaba wore the standard Reconnaissance uniform with a gray V-neck and wore the traditional green cape on expeditions. Nanaba was a calm person, generally quiet and rarely spoke unless she was cited. She did not hesitate to ask for new Scout recruits and was able to take on leadership roles when Mike found himself absent from the squad.
