early life

Idol was born in Stanmore, Middlesex , England as William Albert Michael Broad. Billy Idol 's name was inspired by a teacher's description of him as "idle". In an interview on November 21, 1983, Idol also mentions that the name "was a joke, but also part of the old school English rock. Billy Fury and all that. It was a 'double thing' not just a poke for superstar-type people. It was all kind of — everyone was doing it too — it was fun, you know?" He goes on to say that the name "really doesn't always backfire, only with stupid people who take it seriously." In 1958, when Idol was two years old, his parents moved to Patchogue, Long Island , New York, United States. The family returned to the UK four years later with Idol and a young child, Jane (who had been born in the United States), settling in Dorking, Surrey. In 1971 the family moved to Bromley, south-east London, where he attended Ravensbourne School for Boys . Idol (rather William Broad) also attended Worthing High School for Boys in West Sussex. In October 1975, he went to the University of Sussex to pursue a degree in English and live on campus (East Slope) but left after a year (1976). He then joined the Bromley Contingent, fans of the Sex Pistols , a group that traveled to the city when the band played.
