Muzan Kibutsuji (鬼き舞ぶ辻つじ無む惨ざん, Kibutsuji Muzan?) is the main antagonist of Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is a Demon, being the first of his kind, who has lived for more than a thousand years, being as such, the one responsible for the origin of the other demons, responsible for having corrupted Michikatsu Tsukiguni and being the one who murdered Tanjirō's family and Nezuko, turning the latter into a Demon, triggering Tanjirō's desire for revenge towards him.

Etymology The kanji that make up his name translate as "merciless," "cruelty," "cold-blooded," "tragic," and "pitiful." Likewise, the kanji that make up his last name translate as "Dance of the Demon."

Personality Muzan disguised as a woman Muzan disguised as a woman Muzan's feminine form which reflects her monotony. Muzan is callous, ruthless, and exceptionally intelligent. He sees no value in any humans he has encountered and shows little value in his own subordinates. Rarely annoying or visually happy, he appears completely monotonous and distant on most occasions, even when he callously murders his own subordinates. The only times he shows emotion is when his vision of perfection advances or when his subordinates completely submit to his will. The manga shows that he is more expressive, particularly when he is enraged and his facial features are exaggerated to show it as such (possibly as a way of showing his normally unreadable emotions). In the anime, his expressions change slightly and his tone of voice tends to be consistent at almost all times, accentuating his detached demeanor.

The most prominent trait that Muzan possesses is extreme narcissism, his megalomania, and an obsession with becoming the perfect being possessing immortality. This last behavior is derived from his own Thanatophobia, having experienced closeness to death literally from his own birth, both in his days as a human and in his subsequent encounter and confrontation with Yorīchi Tsugikuni, the first Demon Hunter to use the Breath of the Sun; encounter which almost ended his life and ended up leaving Muzan with a strong post-traumatic stress disorder, causing him to have a violent reaction when he remembers his own near-death experiences, being able to overcome this trauma once he understands, already in his last moments, the words from Kagaya Ubuyashiki where he understood that although living beings, especially humans, are destined to die, his thoughts remain in eternity, which leads him to transfer his cells to Tanjiro to turn him into a Demon who can do what he cannot. was able to achieve: overcome his weakness in sunlight[8]. As he has had almost 1000 years to live and observe, along with almost no real challenges, his extreme self-centeredness is almost expected. He considers almost nothing to be his concern except overcoming his inability to walk in the sun, which is his main drive. His long life and his main obsession with achieving immortality have led him to want every plan he devises to be absolutely perfect, and his megalomaniacal behavior prevents her from seeing his own failures. His belief that he is the closest thing to a perfect being causes him to have zero tolerance for any failure, brutally punishing those who fail him or those he considers weak, even if the failures are minor.
