Ryomen Sukuna (両面宿儺, Ryōmen Sukuna?) (lit. Double-Face Sukuna), more commonly known as Sukuna (宿儺, Sukuna?) is the main antagonist of the manga series Jujutsu Kaisen. Nicknamed King of Curses (呪いの王, Noroi no Ō?), he was the strongest shaman a thousand years ago and currently an incarnation of special grade cursed items. According to legend, Sukuna was a demon with human appearance that existed during the golden age of Jujutsu about 1000 years ago, sorcerers by perfecting their skills were able to defeat him. After his death, they were not able to destroy his body and it passed down generations in the form of cursed objects, represented in a total of 20 fingers[1]. However, years later, during the modern period, Yuji Itadori ends up in possession of a finger and ingests it in an attempt to help the people around him, as a result, Sukuna manages to incarnate into his body[2]. After his victory against Gojo Satoru, Sukuna is titled as the most powerful character in the work, something admitted by Gojo Satoru himself.

Appearance

Sukuna is a tall, muscular man with four arms, four eyes, and a large mouth on his stomach. He has short reddish-pink hair and red eyes, with his two right eyes angled differently and located on a white plate-like structure on the right side of his face. His body is also covered in tattoos, which manifest on his vessel whenever he is in control and are naturally present in his true form. The tattoos are mostly black lines on his wrists, upper arms, upper body, abdomen, and face. He also has black dots tattooed on each of his shoulders. When these tattoos manifest on a two-armed vessel, the lines surrounding his upper arms and wrists are duplicated, and circles form around the black dots on his shoulders. Sukuna's monstrous appearance led many to describe him as a demon with four arms and two faces. [2] In the past and present, Sukuna only wears a pair of pants, as his unique body prevents him from wearing upper body clothing. Previously, Sukuna took on the appearance of his former host: Yuji Itadori, but with his spiky pink hair pushed forward slightly and his tattoos manifested. His incarnation also caused Yuji to have a second pair of eyes beneath his normal eyes, which were usually closed but opened when he took control. Within his Innate Domain, Sukuna wore a light-colored kimono with a black border, a black scarf, and black sandals.

After incarnating into Megumi Fushiguro, she took on his appearance, but also had his spiky black hair pushed forward. Much like Yuji, a second pair of eyes grew beneath her normal eyes and her tattoos manifested on Megumi's body. She wore a black haori with a white kimono and black undershirt underneath tied with a black belt, white pants, and black sandals. She discarded the haori during her battle with Satoru Gojo.

Personality

Sukuna is selfish, cold-hearted, immoral, and exceptionally sadistic. When he was reincarnated shortly after Yuji ingested his finger, he made a comment involving the slaughter of women and children and compared them to worms crawling on the ground. Due to his immense power, he rarely cares about the consequences of his actions, even if they affect his host, Yuji Itadori. In fact, he frequently mocks and insults Yuji, calling him a brat and even laughing at or taking pleasure in Yuji's despair on multiple occasions. Sukuna is aware of his immense power and is quite arrogant about it, brutalizing a Finger Wielder while condescending and proclaiming his superiority over him. For this reason, he is very dismissive of his opponents and rarely takes them seriously, even explicitly stating that he would kill Satoru Gojo to their face. However, these brutal traits should not be mistaken for stupidity. Sukuna is very intelligent and manipulative, taking Yuji's body hostage by ripping out his heart to force him to make a binding vow. [5] He has also shown the ability to acknowledge and praise his opponents, as shown by how before killing Jogo, Sukuna acknowledged his strength despite having completely overpowered him and told Jogo that he should be proud. [6]

Through Sukuna's conversation with Yuji during their fight after possessing Megumi's body, Sukuna maintains that he compares humans to insects and admits that he cannot understand why the weak cling so desperately to life instead of silently accepting the suffering that life forces them to endure, as the weak should have no right to complain. He also states that he does not understand how a creature that falls apart at the mere touch of it can say that it always wants to be happy, expressing his antipathy and disdain for human emotions and will to live. [7] It also reveals that Sukuna's perception of life firmly adheres to social Darwinism. It is also repeatedly stated that Sukuna has a short-sighted view of love and does not understand the value of relationships. [8]

Skills and Powers

Overall Skill Level: In the Golden Age of Jujutsu, the Heian Era, Ryomen Sukuna was feared and regarded with awe by all those in his time as the most powerful sorcerer of the era, defeating and killing thousands of jujutsu sorcerers even as they sharpened their skills against him. One of his feats included single-handedly slaughtering both the Sun, Moon, and Star Squadron and the Five Void Generals, the elite of the Fujiwara Clan's forces, leaving the authorities of Japan so terrified that they were willing to hold festivities in his honor. [9][10] The impact Sukuna left on history until his death earned him the title of "History's Strongest Sorcerer" as well as the "King of Curses". His strength is still held in such high regard that even Satoru Gojo, the strongest jujutsu sorcerer of the modern era, with levels of arrogance, confidence, and pride in his abilities, acknowledged his strength and that a fight between the two of them would be difficult. More than living up to his titles, Sukuna possesses vast amounts of cursed energy and equally incredible control over it, with an extraordinary mastery of jujutsu, but he didn't rely on jujutsu alone either, he also possessed overwhelming physical prowess, capable of dispatching almost any opponent without revealing his true cursed technique.

Even in his weakest state in his incarnation in Yuji's body for most of his time spent there, due to most of his fingers being missing, Sukuna remained extremely strong, able to effortlessly dispatch powerful Cursed Spirits, including a Cursed Spirit that had eaten his finger, which he easily recovered from the Cursed Spirit after completely overpowering it. [11] While deliberately weakening himself by removing Yuji's heart to ensure that Yuji could not switch back with him, Sukuna utterly defeated Megumi Fushiguro, the heir to the Zenin Clan's prized Ten Shadows Technique and a prodigious genius who began school as a Grade 2 Sorcerer with one of the highest potentials in Jujutsu High, to which Megumi admitted how completely outclassed he was and was more than willing to reveal Mahoraga in order to defeat him. Sukuna would have killed Megumi had he not been interested in Megumi's unique talents, though before he could fight Megumi's trump card, Yuji managed to regain control of his body. [12] Sought after by Mahito's group under the belief that his revival could ensure their success, with only three fingers, Sukuna demonstrated an overwhelming superiority in power compared to Mahito by being able to resist his Idle Transfiguration completely[13] and effortlessly inflict such a severe injury on Mahito when he finally became too angry along with dispelling his Self-Incarnation of Perfection with a single attack.[14] This both terrified and intrigued Mahito to the point that he came to firmly believe that with Sukuna being on a completely different level, his resurrection would surely bring about the Age of Curses.[15]

Once Yuji's body had consumed fifteen fingers, Sukuna's overwhelming cursed energy was felt throughout Shibuya once it was awakened, compared to Satoru's, though it was overwhelmingly more sinister. [16] With 75% of his strength restored, Sukuna proved capable of overwhelming Jogo, the most powerful cursed spirit in Mahito's group, in a mostly one-sided battle, as he easily overwhelmed his enemy's best efforts, leaving him completely unable to even land the single blow that would make Sukuna join him, before killing him with his own fire specialty. [17][18] His final act during the Shibuya Incident was to single-handedly defeat Mahoraga, a feat that no Ten Shadows Technique user and even a member of the Gojo Clan with Limitless and the Six Eyes had done. [19] "Incarnation" (by Jucarne niku, Juniku?):[20] There is a small chance that Sukuna could incarnate into whoever eats his fingers, gaining a human physical body in the process. When Yuji consumed the first of his twenty fingers, Sukuna immediately came to possess his body, which he used to inhabit. [21] Unlike other incarnated sorcerers, according to the Angel dwelling within Hana Kurusu, Sukuna, after experiencing death, had developed the knowledge to split his soul as cursed objects,[22] which he demonstrated by imbuing all of his cursed energy into Yuji's pinky finger and then force-feeding it to Megumi in order to possess her body. [23]

*Martial Arts: Sukuna's combat style is characterized by being aggressive, fluid, and extremely efficient. He utilizes a combination of ancient martial arts techniques, leveraging his superhuman speed, strength, and agility. His focus is not only on attacking, but also on destabilizing and demoralizing his opponents through unexpected and strategic moves. During his fight with Megumi, he was able to effortlessly overwhelm Megumi in unarmed combat, countering his close-range attacks with ease before landing a powerful punch that sent him flying. When Yuji attempted to attack him in his Innate Mastery, Sukuna effortlessly countered all of Yuji's attacks before seeing through his attempt to trip him up and defeating him with a single kick. [24] With fifteen fingers, Sukuna easily overpowered Jogo with just hand-to-hand combat before finally killing him with a single use of a cursed technique. He was later able to fight on par with Yuji and Maki Zenin, both being exceptional unarmed fighters with extraordinary physical ability, deflecting most of their blows and landing a few hits of his own, using hand-to-hand combat. [25] Immense Strength: In his first appearance, Sukuna was shown to possess immense physical strength despite being in an incomplete state. He could easily defeat a very large Cursed Spirit with just a simple punch,[26] and during his fight against Gojo he was able to punch the school's roof with such force that it caused the building to break and crack.[27] He easily overpowered the likes of a Finger Wielder, a special grade curse.

When betting Yuji's life against Megumi, Sukuna managed to throw the sorcerer through several floors of the building effortlessly and easily overpowered and destroyed Megumi's shikigami. [28] He even punched Megumi so hard that the raindrops in that area scattered. With fifteen of his fingers, Sukuna punched Jogo through buildings and even destroyed the latter's jaw. [29] His punches also had a considerable effect on Mahoraga. By taking control of Megumi's body, he was able to easily pierce Yuji's stomach and send him flying across the city with a single punch, temporarily stunning him. [30] *Teleportation: Sukuna has the ability to instantly teleport to a location he desires, but he does so in a manner that reflects his chaotic and domineering nature.

Immense Reflexes: Sukuna can easily counter any opponent and is fast enough that his opponent doesn't even realize his limb has been severed. He constantly dodged Mahoraga's blows and counterattacked throughout their fight. He was quickly able to take down Mahoraga for good before he finished regenerating. He was able to dodge Jogo's Ultimate: Meteor. Immense Durability: Even in Yuji's body, Sukuna can use cursed energy to bolster his host's stamina. Sukuna was knocked through five buildings and was shown to be completely fine. [33] Sukuna was able to survive a 200% Hollow Technique: Purple during his fight with Satoru Gojo by defending himself at the last second, losing only his hands. [34] Great Tactical Intellect: Sukuna is an extremely intelligent individual. He has fully grasped the nature of cursed techniques, curses, and reverse cursed techniques as a whole. Because of that, he is able to quickly deduce the inner workings of cursed techniques after only seeing them once or twice and create suitable counterbalances for such techniques. He did this against Mahoraga in their fight, and was able to defeat the shikigami after understanding his technique. Sukuna was also able to realize the potential of Megumi's cursed technique just by seeing it once during their short battle and was able to create a binding vow with Yuji to take over Megumi's body by patiently waiting for the right moment before enacting his plan. [35] During his fight with Hana Kurusu, by using Megumi's memories, he was able to make Hana think that Megumi was in control of her body and thus when she hugged him, he was able to severely injure her. [36][37]

Metamorphosis: Sukuna can create new eyes and mouths on his host, allowing him to see and speak without controlling the host's body. For example, he made a single eye and a fanged mouth on Yuji's left cheek to belittle and mock him. [38][39] * Speed: Sukuna possesses speed that goes beyond human limits, allowing him to move and react at superhuman speed. This speed not only grants him the ability to evade attacks, but also allows him to execute his own offensives incredibly quickly, creating chaos on the battlefield and Sukuna can close distances in an instant, allowing him to appear and disappear on the battlefield with such speed that his opponents have difficulty keeping up with him. This grants him a significant tactical advantage, as he can flank or attack from unexpected angles.

Jujitsu Cursed Energy Manipulation: Immeasurable Cursed Energy: Sukuna possesses vast levels of cursed energy due to his innate power, cementing his title as the King of Curses. He was able to continuously use his techniques throughout his battles without being depleted in the slightest. His cursed energy reserves are likely the most transcendent throughout history, far surpassing special grade cursed spirits and sorcerers alike. Yuta Okkotsu, a special grade sorcerer who possesses even more cursed energy than Satoru Gojo, states that Sukuna has twice as much cursed energy as him or more. [41] Sukuna also has absolute control over his cursed energy, being extremely proficient in both the Domain Expansion and Reverse Cursed Technique and able to perform both flawlessly and repeatedly without issue. Hajime Kashimo, one of the strongest sorcerers from 400 years ago, was amazed by Sukuna's mastery over his cursed energy, demonstrated by his ability to seamlessly switch between amplifying the mastery to his innate technique, to which he stated that if it were not for the Six Eyes, even Satoru Gojo would be no match for Sukuna in utilizing cursed energy. [42]

Sukuna is also capable of using the Reverse Curse Technique (反転術式, Hanten Jutsushiki?)[5]. It is a cursed healing technique that is usually very difficult to learn and requires sophisticated manipulation of cursed energy in order to generate positive energy[8] which will then be used by Sukuna to heal his wounds in a matter of seconds. Unlike any other user of the technique, he is able to regenerate his own and other humans' limbs.[5] Innate techniques: "Sanctuary" (God Fruit Cooking Child Death, Mizushi?): Sukuna's cursed technique allows him to launch invisible slashes at various distances to pass through objects and space, as well as unleash destructive flames to tear the target to pieces, killing them instantly from the cuts. "Dismantle" (Unleash Kai, Kai?): Sukuna's default ranged invisible massive slash attack that can be used against Cursed Spirits and Sorcerers with great effectiveness to slash them to pieces by the most powerful invisible slash. [51] Using Mahoraga's second adaptation to Limitless as a model, Sukuna learned to enhance Dismantle by extending its target area to the world itself, transforming them into "world-slicing slashes" (World Height Perimeter Shellfish Breaking TAO Two Slash Attack Geki, Sekai or Tatsu Zangeki).

"Cleave" (eight hachi, Hachi?): An invisible slashing attack that adjusts depending on the target's toughness and level of cursed energy to cut them down in one blow. [51] Unless used in the expansion of his domain, Sukuna must make physical contact with the target to activate Cleave. [53] "Spiderweb" (Ku Spider also Ito Thread, Kumo no Ito?): Sukuna can use the Cleave technique in the form of a spiderweb touching the ground. As a variation of Cleave, Spiderweb adjusts to the hardness of the environment, collapsing the ground in a single blow with invisible cuts. "Divine Flame" (Cooking Path, Kamino?) [55]: Sukuna can create and manipulate fire arrows for long range attacks by chanting "Open" and forming an explosive fire arrow that shoots at the opponent and kills them including causing massive destruction around them. This technique can only be used after performing Dismantle and Cleave. * Black Flash: This is an offensive technique that occurs when a sorcerer applies cursed energy in an extremely short time interval (0.000001 seconds) right after a physical blow. This causes a distortion of space and an exponential increase in the destructive power of the attack, up to 2.5 times more powerful. Visually, it manifests as a black flash that envelops the sorcerer's fist.

"Naked: Totality - Agito Fused Beast": A fusion shikigami that combines Nue with Great Snake, Round Deer, and Tiger's Funeral. [72] The resulting humanoid shikigami is as tall as Mahoraga, can produce electricity from its fists, [73] and regenerate itself or heal others with the Reverse Cursed Technique. [74]

Anti-Dominance Techniques: "Domain Amplification": Envelops Sukuna in his own domain in the form of an aura around him. Sukuna uses this technique to neutralize Gojo's Limitless technique and is thus able to make physical contact with him. [79] His finesse with Domain Amplification allows him to keep it active while using his Domain Expansion, [80] as well as use it in quick intervals to interrupt and resume Mahoraga's adaptation instead of nullifying its effect. [81] "Hollow Wicker Basket": An anti-domain technique that is the predecessor to Simple Domain . It erects a basket-shaped barrier that neutralizes a domain's barrier to negate its guaranteed impact factor. "Domain Expansion: Demonic Reliquary" (伏魔御厨子, Fukuma Mizushi?): Creates a Buddhist temple decorated with skulls that expands around the target including Sukuna. Sukuna's domain causes the trapped target to be horribly torn to pieces instantly by extremely powerful invisible slashes. *Mahoraga: He is considered the most powerful shikigami with a height between 3 or 4 meters tall, muscular and difficult to control of all those belonging to the Ten Shadows Technique. His unique ability allows him to adapt and nullify any technique used against him. Mahoraga Techniques: * Adaptation: His main ability is to adapt to any technique used against him. This makes him practically invincible in combat. * Mahoraga's Eight-Handled Sword: Its physical form is a sword with eight handles, but its true power lies in its ability to adapt. * Sila Divino Deflection: This is the technical name for his adaptation ability, which allows him to deflect any attack.

*World Slash: It is a curse technique that allows Sukuna to perform an extremely gigantic invisible slash so vast and powerful that it could theoretically split the world in two. It is an extreme manifestation of his mastery over cursed energy and his superhuman strength. Key Features: - Devastating Range: The range of this invisible slash is immense, capable of destroying buildings, landscapes, and potentially anything in its path. - Destructive power: The force behind this invisible cut is so great that it can pulverize virtually any material. * Symbolism: Represents Sukuna's absolute power and ability to cause destruction on a massive scale.

"kamutoke": A powerful cursed vajra-like tool that Sukuna wielded a thousand years ago, which is capable of discharging electricity. Yorozu crafted a replica for Sukuna to use in the modern era, through a binding vow just before he died. [85] "The Heat": A cursed tool similar to a trident that Sukuna wielded a thousand years ago. Its capabilities are unknown. [86]
