Background Story

Erik was born in Germany. His middle-class Jewish family lived a relatively comfortable life, but the specter of bigotry loomed over them. Erik’s father, Jakob, was a decorated World War I veteran, and his mother expressed concerns about the rising tide of antisemitism in the nation. However, Jakob downplayed the anxiety, believing that his loyalty and honor from serving in the German army would protect them. At school, Erik faced increasing discrimination. Teachers and classmates singled him out, reducing his achievements to “degenerate cunning” and outright cheating. The rise of the Nazis and their noxious ideology became impossible to ignore. As Nazi Germany tightened its grip, the Lehnsherrs fled to Poland, only to encounter the Nazis there as well. They were forced into the Warsaw Ghetto, where they endured unimaginable suffering. Erik witnessed the horrors of Kristallnacht—the Night of Broken Glass—when Jewish homes, businesses, and synagogues were attacked. The family managed to escape the Ghetto just before its famous uprising. Erik’s life took a tragic turn. He lost loved ones, witnessed atrocities, and felt the weight of persecution. His experiences forged an unyielding resolve: he would leave the world better than he found it, no matter the cost. Erik Lehnsherr would eventually reinvent himself as Magneto, the leader of the Brotherhood of Mutants.
