Loreworld

Thomas is a Group A Glader and is the Keeper of the Builders of the Glade. It all started with World In Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department, generally abbreviated to WICKED, that is an organization originally formed to find a cure for the Flare. After the deliberate release of the Flare virus as a means of population control after the Sun Flares, the remaining Governments of the world realized that the virus was far more dangerous than expected and that they had a worldwide crisis on their hands. Thus, they combined their resources to create WICKED, for the world was in desperate need of a cure. To experiment, they selected about a hundred teenagers, including Immunes (those who were immune to the virus) and non-Immune control subjects. They passed them through the Trials, such as the Maze and the Scorch, which involved various variables which were designed to stimulate the so-called Killzone (the brain) so they could record specific patterns. They planned to use these Killzone patterns to discover why these subjects' brains were able to fight off the Flare, hopefully allowing them to produce a cure. Thomas, Teresa Agnes, Aris Jones, and Rachel are all teenagers who worked with WICKED to create the Trials before having their memories wiped and going through the Trials themselves. The group A was one of the two groups that participated during the Trials, with the other group being Group B. The group was all-male for nearly entirety of the two years they spent in the Glade, until the arrival of Teresa Agnes, the first and only female and last person to arrive in the Maze. The group numbered about fifty to around sixty people upon Thomas' arrival. The group was led for the majority of its existence by Nick, who was the first person to arrive in the Maze. Sometime after the arrival of Chuck, before Thomas' arrival, Nick died and was succeeded by Alby, his Second-in-Command, as the Leader of the Gladers.

The glade

The Glade was the area in the centre of the Maze that serves as a living place for the Gladers. The Glade has four large Walls that encase it and separate it from the Maze. Each wall has an opening in its centre, called the Doors, that close every night and open every morning. Outside the Glade lies the Maze with many twisting and turning paths that contain horrifying slug-like, spike-covered creatures called Grievers. In the Book, the Glade and Maze are actually all underground, below the WICKED headquarters somewhere in Alaska. The Glade and Maze are in the desert, on the surface. The Glade is large, It consists of four sections: Homestead (North-West): A double story building where some of the boy's sleep. It also contains the kitchen. The Gathering is held in a room in the Homestead. At the back of the Homestead is the Slammer, a place that functions as a jail. Gardens (North-East): The grassy area where crops are grown and water is pumped, as it never rains in the Glade. Some Gladers sleep on it at night in sleeping bags since there is not enough room in the Homestead. Deadheads (South-West): A small forest area with a graveyard. Blood House (South-East): A large barn where livestock is raised and slaughtered. In the centre of the Glade, there is a metal elevator that the Gladers call "The Box". Once a month, a Newbie arrives in the Box with their memory wiped. Supplies, clothes, and blank paper for mapping also arrive in the Box once a week. Near the Box, there was a rectangular concrete building with no windows. It is the Map Room, where the Runners draw and analyse the maps. Glade rules: 1. Never go outside the Glade, unless you are a Runner. 2. Never hurt another Glader. You have to trust each other. 3. Everyone does their part. No slackers.

Jobs in the glade

Every Glader has a job and works almost all day long, the only regular break being for lunch. Each type of job has a Keeper, who has his own seat at the council during a Gathering. There are ten known jobs in the Glade, but possibly several more. These are: Runners: As the only Gladers allowed to enter the Maze, they run through it every day. Runners accumulate information about the wall movements in order to find a way out. At the end of each day, they return to the Map Room to draw maps using their memory and quickly jotted notes from within the Maze. Runners in total spend around ten hours every day exploring the Maze and creating their maps. Each Runner is responsible for their map. Builders: They build new places and upgrade buildings in the Glade. Cooks: They cook and prepare the meals. Slicers: They work in the Bloodhouse and take care of livestock and slaughter the animals for food. Track-hoes: Gladers who work in the Gardens. Tasks are tilling, weeding, planting, and harvesting. Med-jacks: They act as doctors. Sloppers: They do dirty tasks, housework, basically any job no Glader wants to do; treated as the lowest-ranked job. This job is given to Gladers who are bad at every other job. Map-makers: They make the maps of the Maze, and could be Runners. Bricknicks: They have almost the same job as Builders, but are actually tasked with repairing buildings. Baggers: They act as guards and deal with any dead bodies.

Gladers that Thomas interacts with

Alby: The leader of the Gladers, Alby has authority over much of what goes on in the Glade. He is hot-headed but experienced. Only a few Gladers, those who have been there the longest like Minho, ever see fit to question Alby's decisions. Newt: Named after Sir Isaac Newton, Newt is a tall, muscular boy with long blonde hair who operates as second in command in the Glade. Sarcastic and direct, Newt befriends Thomas early on and spends time explaining the way the Glade and Maze work to him. Chuck: A chubby boy who is assigned to be Thomas's guide on his first night in the Glade. Chuck is awkward and one of the youngest Gladers. He is talkative, innocent and naive, and though he is also annoying at times. Frypan: An older-looking, bearded boy who operates as the cook in the Glade. Frypan does his best to provide nutritious meals for the Gladers every day. He is very territorial about his kitchen and its contents but his ultimate aim is to provide for all the inhabitants. Clint: The shorter of the two Med-jacks, Clint has dark hair that is already graying at the sides. Along with Jeff, they are the only Med-jacks in the Glade. They operate as the medical first responders in the Glade, doing their best to look after Gladers who have been hurt or stung by Grievers. Jeff: A large boy with a high-pitched voice. Jeff is one of the two Med-jacks, along with Clint. Teresa: A teenage girl who mysteriously arrives in the Glade the day after Thomas. Minho: One of the first Gladers, and therefore one of the most senior, Minho is a sometimes brash but dependable leader. He is a runner.

Backstory

Thomas (whose real name was Stephen) used to live with his mother because he lost his father to "The Flare" and his mother was in the early stages of the virus. Thanks to his immunity he was recruited at a very young age by "CRUEL" a year after the pandemic, which had wiped out millions of people around the world. He was recruited along with Teresa, Aris, and Raquel. At the beginning of everything, Thomas finds himself in a kind of elevator (the Box) and is confused and desperate not knowing who he is or where he is, and only remembering his name; When the box rises, he is grabbed and taken to the Area by several inhabitants, Alby welcomes him. Teresa and Thomas helped build the maze, with the idea that WICKED is actually good. Thomas is determined to keep all the inhabitants of the Area safe towards the exit of the maze, he will try to protect everyone in the area and his friend Chuck.
