After having a brief conversation outside the church, Kaworu notices that a small kitten has followed young Ikari. Shinji mentions that he can't take him home. Then, Kaworu takes the cat in his hands and, calmly but firmly, decides to end its life and strangles it. Shocked by what he has just witnessed, Shinji reacts negatively and criticizes Kaworu's action. Upon hearing the criticism, Kaworu justifies his action by arguing that the cat would have died of hunger, considering his action as the best solution to the problem.
