Origin
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations[al is a Japanese manga series written by Ukyo Kodachi and Masashi Kishimoto, and illustrated by Mikio Ikemoto. It began monthly serialization with Kodachi as writer and Kishimoto as editorial supervisor in Shueisha's shönen manga magazine, Weekly Shönen Jump, in May 2016 and was transferred to Shueisha's monthly magazine, V Jump, in July 2019. In November 2020 Kodachi stepped down, with Kishimoto taking over as writer.
Uzumaki Boruto
Boruto is loud, energetic, and stubborn not unlike his father; even possessing a verbal tic, "dattebasa" (だってばさ), similar to Naruto's "dattebayo" and his paternal grandmother's "(da)ttebane" ((だ)ってばね). However, compared to his father at his age, Boruto is more refined and crafty, seemingly knowing all the shortcuts, as well as more mature in knowing how the world works. Between the two, he is more sarcastic. Unlike Naruto, Boruto doesn't yell what he feels, which is the biggest difference.[7] Despite his laid-back attitude, he is very diligent.[8] Conversely, Boruto's upbringing has also been different than that of his father's: Boruto's family is always there for him, and he likewise has many friends, and his acquisitions came easily and naturally to him from a combination of prodigious talents[1] and nurturing parents. For these reasons, Boruto has a high opinion of himself and freely brags about his abilities. Still, his arrogance has made him put no value in teammates or teamwork, believing he can do anything on his own.
Uchiha Sarada
Sarada's personality is derived from both her parents, although she takes more after her mother which is noted by Naruto. While Sarada is friendly, sociable, and polite, she has a fierce temper similar to her mother's and doesn't back down from an argument; she also inherited Sakura's verbal tic, "Shannaro!". Like her father, she retains an aloof and calm demeanor unless she is provoked. She has a close attachment to her parents, whom she affectionately refers to as "Papa" and "Mama", despite being apart from her father for many years. Unlike her parents in their childhood, Sarada has respected manners. In contrast to Sakura, she is never overconfident nor obsessed with boys, but modest and treats her classmates nicely, especially her friends Chocho Akimichi and Boruto Uzumaki. Despite Sarada's often bickering with Boruto and her rivalry with him, they are close friends and she cares about him greatly. Sarada even when as far as to encourage her father to make Boruto his student after she witnessed how much effort he put in when trying to learn the Rasengan. When Sasuke finally decided to accept Boruto as his student, Sarada became excited on Boruto's behalf. Sarada is also a curious child; regardless of finding Boruto annoying, she observes him around the village, watching from afar. She comes to the conclusion that they indeed have something in common (both of them want to spend more time with their fathers), displaying keen insight. While she appears polite and friendly, she easily has a fierce temper like her mother. Like many children her age, Sarada also has great respect for the seventh Hokage Naruto Uzumaki. It was due to her admiration for Naruto that Sarada made it her goal to become Hokage. Before her Academy graduation, Sarada questioned the value and meaning of being a ninja since her father's duties as a shinobi kept him away from home for many years. Sarada has a good relationship with her mother
Mitsuki
Mitsuki has a very calm and matter-of-fact demeanor. He is generally seen very cheerful, if not indifferent, the situation at hand. While not confrontational, he freely speaks his mind in any situation and does things at his own pace. He is also shown to have a sharp wit, being well-read and observant, showing advanced knowledge in mathematics. He's quite close with Boruto, caring about his opinion above that of most others. Seemingly stemming from his harsh upbringing with Orochimaru, Mitsuki is very vicious in battle, showing no restraint and willing to kill his foes without hesitation. He is also very driven and committed when given a task, as when he was ordered to kill someone, he would not waiver regardless of who it is. During his time at the Academy, it doesn't seem as though he had much of a friendship with Sarada Uchiha until they were assigned to Team Konohamaru. Despite not revealing much about his origins or parents to them, Mitsuki cares about his teammates, Boruto and Sarada, to the point where he never hesitates to rush to their side when they are in danger or in need of assistance. Mitsuki has a high opinion of Boruto as the son of the Seventh Hokage and the grandson of the Fourth Hokage, and Mitsuki believes Boruto is destined to become Hokage himself one day, despite hearing Sarada's repeated declarations that she will be Hokage. Mitsuki seems to admire Naruto and Sasuke Uchiha due to them both being high-ranked shinobi and tells Boruto and Sarada how his parent told him their fathers are rivals who can fight equally. Mitsuki also holds a great deal of admiration for his father as well as confidence in his abilities, to the point of being naive, as shown when he boasted to Boruto and Sarada that Orochimaru was even more powerful than both of their fathers.
Kawaki
Stemming from his harsh childhood, Kawaki is shown to be aggressive and vulgar to people he dislikes or opposes. At the same time, despite his efforts to distance himself from others, he was not completely heartless. He showed sympathy for weak and injured animals, and refused to let innocent children get hurt.[10] Also, he can remain calm and collected when questioning strangers, such as when Kawaki listened to Konohamaru Sarutobi's explanation about himself and his team. When not letting his temper get the best of him, Kawaki is shown to be very observant and pragmatic, easily reading the flow of battle before him and how best to react. Likewise, he is capable of seeing through deceptions and quickly formulating a cunning thought-out plan.[11] Mitsuki considers him reliably effective in conveying his feelings, even if done in an aggressive manner.[12] Due to the massive suffering he has endured while forced to be a vessel of the Kara, which he described as being a living hell, he would gladly die than be stuck in said hell for the rest of his life. He has even shown signs of post-traumatic stress disorder, as simply seeing dripping roots of plants serves as a reminder of his struggles and has left him panting in horror. He appears to loathe himself for what he has become over the years he spent with Kara, stating that he would learn the Shadow Clone Technique just so he could beat himself up to vent out. Kawaki is known to hold grudges, especially towards Kara, becoming highly alert and aggressive when facing off against members of the group. He particularly resents Jigen for what he deemed as a violation of his promises of safety, as shown by how he quickly erupted into a rage while unconscious upon being reminded of Jigen's adoption of him and later on when he showed clear resentment while describing Jigen's experiment.
Nara Shikadai
Shikadai takes after his father, Shikamaru, in several ways, possessing a similar relaxed, unenthusiastic personality. He finds participating in activities to be very tiresome and is quick to shirk out of them as seen when he rejected an invitation from Inojin to train after school. Also like his father, he tends to say "complete" when successfully performing a technique or battle plan.[4] Stemming from his lax nature, he also isn't one to properly respect rank, greeting his uncle — the Kazekage — plainly before flatly asking for his other uncle Kankurō. He also showed himself to be blunt and outspoken like his mother, telling Boruto Uzumaki that pursuing a prank during the Five Kage Summit was stupid. At the same time, he cares very much about his clan, not wanting to let down it or his family in not living up to its reputation. Likewise, his love for his family would make him stand his moral grounds, as he rejected an S-rank mission due to it was nothing more than an excuse for the client to use Shikadai to get close to his father. Shikadai is referred to as a gamer and seems to have a strong moral code.[5] For instance, he was personally offended when Boruto revealed he was cheating in the video game the two play with Inojin. He also gave up against Boruto, who he did not know was cheating at the time, in their Chūnin Exam fight because he felt that as a gamer, one should understand when to give up to fight another day when the odds are overwhelmingly against you.[5] He also has a fierce rivalry with Boruto. At the same time, he appears to be rather close to him, accepting Hinata's request to watch out for her son, implying he is also close to Hinata.
Yamanaka Inojin
Inojin seems rather obedient and the most reasonable of the new generation of the Ino–Shika–Chō trio, as he, unlike his teammates, insisted on going to training to learn the Ino–Shika–Chō techniques. At the same time, he can be very blunt and indifferent to people, situations and the feelings of those involved even to the point of being condescending. He also seems to have inherited the role of being the most motivated of the trio from his mother, Ino, and his late grandfather Inoichi. Because of his nature, Inojin is a very alert individual with outstanding powers of observation.[1] Despite regularly practising his respective parents' ninjutsu skills, mainly his father's, Inojin is always looking for a newer and more stylish means to go about it. At the same time, he has very simple goals in life, hoping to make more practical use of his skills for better financial gain
Metal Lee
Metal is a very respectful and honourable young man who tends to talk exclusively without contractions in his words. He apparently gained this nature from his father, Rock Lee, whom he has sincere respect for, and likewise his father's sensei, Might Guy. Also like his father, he is a hot-blooded and dedicated shinobi, exemplified from consistently participating in his father's daily gruesome training regime. At the same time however, he has stage fright, as when too many people watch him, he locks up and becomes unable to move or perform properly.[5] Eventually however, he was able to adjust to his anxiety, no long letting it hinder his performance, despite still being visibly there.[6] Metal also appears to be a well-read individual, as he showed in-depth knowledge of the five current Kage, though ironically, he is unaware of how strong Naruto is.
Aburame Shino
Since his early childhood, Shino has been a calm, collected, and solitary person, who is quite mysterious. Shino is portrayed as being somewhere between merely stoic and matter-of-fact, rarely ever smiling or showing emotion at all; rather than thank his teammates for congratulating him on his victory in the preliminaries, he told them that he expected them to do the same. He also has a tendency of holding grudges and being rather intimidating, such as seen when Naruto failed to recognise him at the start of Part II (which is fair as the only visible part of his face were his sunglasses), but easily recognised Kiba and Hinata regardless. He still holds that grudge to this day. Shino seems to be aware of these odd personality traits; in the anime, when he ate food poisoned with a chemical that forced him to laugh, he menacingly told Naruto to forget it had ever happened. His interest in insects only helps him strengthen this viewpoint; by spending most of his spare time watching them, and often making analogies to insects when talking, people have come to identify Shino as "creepy", and tend to dislike being in his company for prolonged periods of time. In his Infinite Tsukuyomi dream, Shino dreamt that he found a new giant-sized species of bugs and tamed it as his own. Despite occasionally arguing with Kiba due to their personality differences, Shino has a very strong sense of connection with his teammates and allies. This was first seen when he promised Sasuke Uchiha to help him fight Gaara after dealing with Kankurō, but regretted not being able to uphold that promise after being poisoned. Shino is also very brave as he and his teammates were terrified after seeing Gaara's powers during the second stage of the Chūnin Exams, but he still resolved to help Sasuke in any way he could with Gaara. He also regretted being unavailable and therefore unable to help with retrieving Sasuke.
Uzumaki Naruto
As an adult, Naruto is wiser and more mature, though he retains some of his negligence for honorifics. Although he finally achieves his dream of becoming Hokage, its many tasks not only overwhelm Naruto at times, but often leave him unable to spend time with his family, particularly upsetting his son Boruto. He admits that part of this stems from not having grown up with a father himself, making it difficult for him to know how to interact properly with his own children, mostly with his son. Naruto is also more responsible in his duties as Hokage and as a father: he forbids the use of the Kote in the Chūnin Exams as it diminishes a shinobi's true potential; he is disappointed by Boruto's cheating in the exams and even removes his forehead protector in front of the audience after lecturing him. Nevertheless, Naruto deeply loves his family, as he creates shadow clones to tend to them while he's busy, protects them in times of danger, spends time with them when he can, and expresses pride in his children's successes. He in fact adopts Hiruzen's philosophy that everyone in the village is his family, believing that true relationships are made up of love rather than blood relations. His refusal to give his son any special treatment due to their blood relationships, along with the insistence that the boy professionally addresses him as "Seventh" or "Hokage" while in the office, is a testament to Naruto's lack of bias and prejudice.
Uzumaki Himawari
Himawari is a cheerful and considerate girl. This also extends to strangers, such as when she gave up her Kurama toy to a boy, believing that he needed it more than her. Likewise, she shows a strong affinity towards animals, able to approach most wild beasts calmly and with acceptance from them. She is also considerate about the future. While many expect her to become a shinobi due to her lineage, she has decided to experience various career paths to determine her own goals.[4] Himawari has also picked up her father's trait of referring to others with nicknames, such as when she referred to Orochimaru as "Oro-chan".[5] She is also a rather educated girl; despite not being in the Academy yet, Himawari has strong understanding of chakra manipulation and its applications to advanced techniques like the Shadow Clone Technique.[6] She is also likewise very astute to other people's nature, able to notice changes in their attitude.[7] Angry Himawari Himawari's violent side. Himawari is very mature and responsible for her age, often helping her mother with chores. At the same time, Himawari has a temper; she can become very violent when provoked. When her favourite plush was accidentally damaged by Boruto, she assaulted him. She usually has no memory of these outbursts. This display of aggression made her elder brother run away and hide from her and vow never to anger her again.[2] The same event also caused her father and Kurama to be terrified of her.[8] As mentioned by Iruka Umino, Himawari possesses the same stubbornness that her father and brother possess, while also being somewhat boisterous and hyperactive, mainly when she's determined in achieving a certain goal. Himawari also shows signs of her father's nindō of never giving up at the face of difficulty, urging Ehō Norimaki to continue their Academy trial session despite them being trapped in a well. However, contrary to Boruto she is also shown to display traits of patience and humbleness
Uzumaki Hinata
Hinata is soft-spoken and polite, always addressing people with proper honorifics. She is kind, always thinking of others' more than for herself, and always caring about others feelings and well-being. She doesn't like to be confrontational for any reason; she doesn't even like being confrontational about her dislike of confrontation. It is for this reason that Hinata so often comes off as meek or timid to others, as her overwhelming kindness can render her unable to respond or act for fear of offending somebody. Throughout the years, Naruto remains her primary motivation; she willingly faced Pain to protect Naruto, despite knowing she has no chance of winning[15]. She even defends Naruto from himself when he's in doubt, repeating to him his refusal to never give up[17]. Two years after the war, upon achieving her greatest dream of having her love reciprocated by Naruto to form a deep and committed relationship together. After marrying Naruto and he becomes Hokage, Hinata remains supportive of him and his increased responsibilities, even though she yearns for him to be home more often. As a mother and wife, she has become a master homemaker, keeping the family well-structured yet well-adjusted and happy. While very loving and supportive of her family, she is equally strict and assertive. Her newfound structured nature made her very intimidating and more easily angered when her family acts up, easily keeping them in line and swiftly punishing them for their misconduct[18][19]. She is also insightful and wise with her words, realizing that her children, particularly Boruto, take after Naruto in the desire to prove themselves to others and that she must believe in them to do things on their own[16]. In Naruto Retsuden, Naruto reveals that Hinata was forced to become a shinobi due to her lineage, but, if circumstances had been different, she would have chosen another path
Otsutsuki Momoshiki
Momoshiki and his father Kinshiki, originate from an unknown dimension, which has a God Tree, whose power supply has been depleted. Like Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, they also wanted to recollect all chakra into a new Chakra fruit, only to create medicine that could sustain their godlike power, youth, and longevity. Fearful of their arrival, Kaguya created the White Zetsu Army in order to fend off against them should they ever attempt to steal her chakra. Personality Momoshiki was typically calm, collected, and calculating. However, he had been prone to demonstrate sadistic tendencies. Momoshiki also had a severe superiority complex and thought very lowly of people other than himself, calling Naruto, Sasuke, Boruto, and Sarada "lowly beings". Likewise, he also cared very little for other people, even his own father. In a difficult situation, he would absorb his father to claim more power
Jigen
Around the time that Kaguya Ōtsutsuki and Isshiki Ōtsutsuki arrived on Earth. Jigen was a novice monk and after Kaguya left him for dead, Isshiki assaulted Jigen, during which he shrunk himself and entered the monk's ear in order to survive. Through having his nutrients absorbed from within his body, Isshiki began gaining control over Jigen's body, and eventually lost full control of it. Afterward, Isshiki embedded his Kāma in Jigen, but because his body wasn't powerful enough to sustain him. Isshiki also opted not to revive himself in him, instead of waiting until a more suitable vessel could be found. In time, Isshiki used Jigen's body to form a clandestine organization to help achieve his goal, dubbed Kara. Eventually, Jigen found and purchased Kawaki from his abusive father with a large sum of money, to use as a potential new vessel. After taking custody of the boy, Jigen introduced himself as his new father and reassured him. He would later attempt to transfer Kāma to Kawaki and fourteen other boys in an experiment conducted with the help of the Kara scientist Amado, with Kawaki being the only known success and thirteen dying outright. Despite promising him safety, Jigen put Kawaki through grueling training to master the Kāma and would constantly berate him as only having value as a vessel. He would also strike the boy whenever he questioned him. As with the rest of Kara, Jigen also had his body extensively modified by Amado's Scientific Ninja Tools. Isshiki plotted to feed Jigen, along with himself still living within the monk's body, to the Ten-Tails, in order to fulfill the requirements to have it bloom into a God Tree, despite the resultant Chakra Fruit will be of lower quality due to the sacrifice's poor health and strength.
Uchiha Sakura
Sakura has been in love with Sasuke since childhood and initially focuses on getting his attention above everything else. Her initial infatuation with him was rooted from his good looks and cool, collecting attitude, and his rejections failed to deter her. After becoming teammates, Sakura realized Sasuke's imperfections and suffering, and her desire shifted to helping him as much as she can, which resulted in the two of them becoming closer and protective towards each other and her feelings developing into true love. Despite being grateful for her loving him after she confesses her feelings to stop him from defecting from Konoha, Sasuke rejects her but thanks her before leaving[30]. This rejection deeply upsets Sakura, driving her to plea for Naruto to bring Sasuke home and, when Naruto fails, motivating her to become stronger so that she can bring Sasuke back herself[31]. Sasuke, however, is colder to both Sakura and Naruto in Part II: he showed indifference to them when they met after more than two years and, in moments of intense hatred while trying to cut his bonds with anyone, has even tried to kill them. Sakura tries to separate herself from her feelings when Sasuke becomes an international criminal, attempting to kill him in order to prevent a war, but her love for him proves to be too great for her to harm him, Even at the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War, Sakura holds out hope that she may mean something to him[34]. Despite Sasuke's crimes, Sakura is able to forgive him after he apologizes to her. As an adult, Sakura's personality is relatively the same, although she becomes a more calmed woman. She doesn't lose her sense of purpose and the responsibilities she holds as a kunoichi and as a first-rate medic. After marrying Sasuke, Sakura became very loyal to him and even refused to leave his side when they were traveling together and she was pregnant with their daughter, Sarada.
Uchiha Sasuke
As an adult, Sasuke becomes wiser and mature, as well as genuinely warm and caring, although he retains his habit of insulting others, albeit more comically than coldly, and mostly towards Naruto. Although he fulfills Itachi's wish for him to live and protect Konoha, his duty of protecting it from the shadows and investigating the mysteries of Kaguya leave Sasuke unable to spend time with his family, to the point where he failed to recognize his daughter Sarada. Sasuke takes his duties as a shinobi and a father seriously: he spends most of his daughter's childhood investigating threats greater than Kaguya; he is protective of Sarada and is very supportive of her goal to become Hokage and not end up like him. Sasuke admits his mistakes as a father, but he has strong parenting skills, as he has faith in Sarada's abilities. Nevertheless, Sasuke loves his family dearly, as he tries to spend time with them when he is able to come home, and expresses pride in his daughter's growth and achievements. He is married to Sakura
