personality

Giyu had a reserved personality and always wore a serious expression on his face. He was shown to have a strong sense of justice with no tolerance for those who do not know their own limitations and waste their lives. Although he held a deep hatred towards demons and never hesitated to kill one, he was able to go against the rules of the Demon Slayer Corps by protecting Nezuko Kamado upon realizing that she might be different from other demons[12] and even agreed to sacrifice his life for the sake of her and her brother, Tanjiro Kamado by committing sepukku if the girl were to eat a human[13]. This implied that he did not completely despise demons like the rest did[14], and was willing to make an exception by letting them[15] live if they did not kill or eat humans[16] proving in turn that he was the most pragmatic when dealing with demons instead of hating them like the rest of the hunters did. He was someone who didn't talk much and seemed to have trouble interacting with others, because of this he kept his distance from his companions[17]. This led him to have a kind of complex with what others think of him and he refused to believe that he was hated as Shinobu Kochō claimed[18]. After having the opportunity to relate to those around him, he wished to improve his relationship with the rest of the Pillars. His distant attitude was due to the fact that he developed a strong inferiority complex since his participation in the Final Selection, which made him a more severe person; this affected him to the point of wanting to abandon his position as Water Pillar. He came to his senses after Tanjiro Kamado explained to him that he should not live with the guilt of being a survivor but that he should live for the people who sacrificed their lives for him.

As characteristic clothing, he used the regulation attire of the Demon Extermination Corps, also wearing a Haori divided[4] into two colors, one red[5], which belonged to his sister[6] and one in the form of geometric patterns[7] of green, orange and yellow[8]; this last pattern is a reminder of his friendship with Sabito[9]. During the final battle against Muzan Kibutsuji, he lost his right arm[10] and three months after what happened, he had a haircut

Personal Skills Enhanced Speed: Giyu possessed a high level of speed. At times, it was imperceptible to humans and demons alike. This was demonstrated on several occasions; when he snatched Nezuko Kamado from his brother's arms[20], when he grabbed Inosuke Hashibira before he realized what happened, or when he cut off the head of the Lower Moon Five, Rui, in the blink of an eye[21]. Superhuman Physical Strength: After years of training, he ended up developing superhuman physical strength. Demonstrations of his strength were shown when, for example, he managed to knock down Nezuko and Tanjiro after causing a strong gust of wind by brandishing his sword[22] or when he managed to turn his nichirin crimson red by colliding it with Sanemi's sword.

Skills as a Swordsman As the Pillar of the Demon Slaying Corps, Giyu was a very powerful and talented swordsman. His combat style was Water Breathing (水みずの呼こ吸きゅう, Mizu no kokyū?). He was able to defeat Rui (Lower Moon Five)[24] with relative ease and hold a fight with Akaza (Upper Moon Three). Master Swordsman: As a hunter and pillar of the Extermination Corps, he was one of the most powerful and skilled swordsmen in the entire organization.[25] His skills as a swordsman were high enough for Akaza, the Upper Moon Three, to claim that Giyu possessed finely developed swordsmanship.[26] Crimson Red Nichirin: During the battle against Muzan Kibutsuji, the Pillar of Wind, Sanemi Shinazugawa, had a strong clash with Giyu's Nichirin sword, causing both to temporarily turn a crimson red, granting them the ability to hinder the enhanced regeneration of demons.[27] Demon Slayer Mark (鬼き殺さつ痣あざ, Kisatsu Aza?): During his confrontation with Akaza, he was able to awaken his Demon Slayer Mark which allowed him to enhance his physical capabilities to much higher levels. His mark resembled streams of water and was located on the left side of his face.[28] Water Breathing (水みずの呼こ吸きゅう,, Mizu no kokyū?): This was the style he learned from his master, Sakonji Urokodaki[29]. It allowed him to control the oxygen in his blood, by controlling his breathing. In turn, he was able to increase his strength and resistance when fighting, even equaling or surpassing demons. He knew all the stances of this style, even developing his own technique, the 11th stance. Like all the pillars, Giyu was also able to maintain total concentration breathing. First Stance: Surface Slash (壱いちノ型かた 水みな面も斬ぎり,, Ichi no kata: Minamo Giri?)[30]: He generated a powerful slash forming a wave with the movement of his weapon, enhancing his attack capable of easily decapitating any target. Second Stance: Water Wheel (弐にノ型かた 水みず車ぐるま,, Ni no kata: Mizu Guruma?)[31]: He performed a 360° turn in any direction while holding his sword steady, forming a circle of water, making a powerful cut at the enemy. Third Stance: Dance of the Currents (参さんノ型かた 流りゅう流りゅう舞まい,, San no kata: Ryūryū Mai?)[32]: He swung his sword against his opponent in a way that imitated the movement of water currents, thus being a fluid attack in a circular motion. Fourth Stance: Tidal Strike (肆しノ型かた 打うち潮しお,, Shi no kata: Uchishio?)[33]: He performed several consecutive cuts while fluidly spinning, simulating a tide around the target. Fifth Stance: Rain After the Drought (伍ごノ型かた 干かん天てんの慈じ雨う,, Go no kata: Kanten no Jiu?)[34]: It consisted of a cut that ended the life of the target without causing any pain. Sixth Stance: Winding Whirlwind (陸ろくノ型かた ねじれ渦うず,, Roku no kata: Nejire Uzu?)[35]: As he fiercely twisted his upper and lower body, he created a whirlpool that cut through anything caught in it. Seventh Stance: Piercing Raindrops (漆しちノ型かた 雫しずく 波は紋もん突づき,, Shichi no kata: Shizuku wa Mondzuki?)[36]: This stance consisted of a quick and precise stab. This stance stood out from the others because of how quickly it could be performed.

Eighth Stance: Waterfall Lake (捌はちノ型かた 滝たき壷つぼ,, Hachi no kata: Takitsubo?)[37]: He performed a vertical slash causing devastating damage to his target. Ninth Stance: Chaotic Splash (玖くノ型かた 水すい流りゅう飛沫しぶき,, Ku no kata: Suiryū shibuki?)[38]: It minimized the landing time and the surface area needed when landing, allowing him to move without limits. Tenth Stance: Dragon of Change (拾じゅうノ型かた 生せい生せい流る転てん,, Jū no kata: Seisei ruten?)[39]: It consisted of a continuous attack that increased its strength with each rotation, creating powerful cuts. Eleventh Stance: Bonanza (拾じゅう壱いちノ型かた 凪なぎ,, Jū Ichi no kata: Nagi?)[40]: It was created by himself. It ceased all bodily movement, disabling incoming attacks. Its effectiveness was limited as continuous rapid attacks could penetrate the technique.
